Looking at changing the damper on my bike as i have been getting a few good slappers here and there when having a go on the rougher roads.
I have tried an ohlins on it but it is a pain in the ass to adjust. I seen a guy with a toby damper on his k5 and he said it works a treat and very easy to adjust.
Just wondering if anyone has is using one and their thoughts on it.
It is for road use only

i would recomend spending some coin on you suspension and getting that sorted, probably the cause of the "tank slapper".
If yuve already done that and your still getting them then i'd re-evaluate how hard your riding on those "rougher roads".
The 08 gixxer has an electronic controled steering damper, and i dare say it shoudl be enough for 90% or riders, the last 10% that do need them are only on the track and are generally in some sort or higher level of racing
but if you just wanted a cool looking ohlins steering damper then go for it. . .

Having your suspension sorted doesn't help when landing wheelies at 240 plus a decent damper does
So if anyone wants to comment on the question i asked please do so

Well, to answer your question accurately we need to ascertain if it will be used to prevent slappers on rougher roads as previously stated or to land high speed wheelies. :ayyy:

Well it is for both but if i posted it was also for high speed wheelies i know what would happen lol
The reason i was thinking the toby is i can bump it up easy when i want to wheelie and then turn it back

Then you need your suspension soughted for the rougher roads and an Ohlins will do the trick for the wheelies because you will never need to adjust it. :ayyy:
Easy fix.......
Dont do 240klm wheelies and the slaps will stop... Slow down and go slow.. There ya go, that wasnt that hard now was it

1. Do you still have a license ?
2. Where can you do wheelies @ 240k's "plus" on a public road ?

How is it hard to adjust an Ohlins damper? Turn dial one way it gets harder, turn it the other way it gets softer. Done.

it is positioned down under the clock bracket behind the headlight so very hard to adjust while riding

With all due respect, and I am not going to advise on what I think the real problem happening is here - as essentially altho' I have tested fork designs with 200 or so plonk downs; none of them have been on bumpy surfaces, so i simply cannot know!
Anyhow, what I do mean to add here, is that the SD should be set in usually the 5-10 click range and then pretty much left alone - the exception to that rule would be the OEM Kawasaki Öhlin's dampers (0-4), and the newly design units like the SD022 (from Moto GP)...
Otherwise, the only cockpit, cross bike damper to offer from me is the pressurised WP type....

no i cant wheelie all the way down the M4 using blinkers to change lanes. the speed camera on M4 cant pick up no. plates when there facing the road, is that why you wheelie thru there and all the way to penrith?

Get a SCOTTS, made by Ohlins but ROTARY.....i don't rate the Ohlins Ram damper, George had one on his ZX-10 and it did nothing to stop Slappers

I got kicked out of WSID not long ago... i took the old F4i (60t) down (up!) the strip :lmao:
still ran an 11.7 on one wheel... but sat on the limiter well before the traps
anyhoot..... i looked at the SD ohlins this evening.... nice piece of kit (maybe a few more dollars, but long term..... keep from bike to bike)

The OEM used-on-ZX10R Öhlin's do not have the regular parts within them (not 100% same as after-market type) - to be fair... and if that was the case with his scenario - besides, slappers mostly go away with better suspension set-up; however, 10R's require a few things to stabilise, and even then not 100%... (hard bikes) :D

There is a brace you can buy out of Japan for the ZX10, apparently it transforms the bike, I used to have pics of it, but basically it moves the pivot point of the motor forward a tad. Again, it's supposed to make them an awesome thing to ride. Can find out about getting one if anyone is interested.
And the Ohlins dampers on the ZX10's as standard are just like Ohlins suspension in Ducs, pov'o packs you can't buy from Ohlins, just a nice sticker on an average (for Ohlins) products to sell shit.

Yeah that's what I'd heard, so I went out and bought the real deal and it's feels markedly different - a lot better than the diet-coke damper on the 06/07.
Didn't know it was the same deal for the Ducati suspension.. you'd think it'd be the real deal for the price
Birdman45
13-03-2009, 02:59 PM
Nope, only a name on it to justify the price, coz people think "oh it's got Ohlins suspension, you can understand why I am being raped now" Hahaha

OK, truth and honesty time....
Like I stated above: "The OEM used-on-ZX10R Öhlin's do not have the regular parts within them (not 100% same as after-market type)"
(shit, now he's quoting 'imself - wotever next?)
...seriously, the only difference between the proper expensive and fully functional Öhlin's steering damper and the OEM types supplied on Japanese bikes as OEM fitment dampers, is in 2 little internal parts - total cost of parts around 35 dollars...
I will convert these dampers for $130 all up, including the parts required (on my shelf), a full strip and re-oil, plus re-bleed labour.
