hop onto www.motorcycling.com.au

I'll try the search here, in the racing forum there was a thread by me about Whos racing... near the end they talk about the new engine casing protection rules.

Incorrect...

From Ross Martin at MA

Please note that at the MA Board meeting held on February 4th 2009 rule 15.2.3.4 (engine cases) was amended to read:

All lateral covers/engine cases containing oil and which could be in contact with the ground during a crash, must be protected by a second cover made from composite materials, type carbon or Kevlar, or be fitted with heavy duty crash resistant end cases made from solid metal.Plates and/or bars from aluminium or steel are also permitted. All these devices must be designed to be resistant against sudden shocks and must be fixed properly and securely. Bonding alone is not a suitable method of mounting.

The rule amendment applies immediately.

Thanks,

Ross Martin.

Hi guys,

Just after some advice on engine case protection.

I bought the attached from RatedR believing they will be ok but at the track days 6/7 June someone else thought they may not be good enough. Consider race day is looming I really need to find out if it's good enough....Also not 100% on how we've mounted it as that's the only place it seems to fit but looks different to their other ones which actually rest against the clutch cover itself, instead of sticking out in the breeze like mine does...

thanks

Yeh thanks Wetty, I had checked em out (don't need left side, already have woodcraft) but was hoping to get away with it without spendingh $300-$400.

I'm after something cheaper like some of the homemade jobbies I've seen elsewhere on RATS which is why I thought the one I got would be ok.....

Which I'm still not sure if it is or not > after seeing what you're selling it would seem not though.

WET4URacing
17-06-2009, 12:29 PM
we make what you have to use if you dont replace the cover with a H/duty replacement cover like your Wcraft 1. i run the Wcraft on my 10 coz we dont and arent makin for the older stuff. KRT use our carbon covers mainly coz there lite and when they do tip over they have loads of spare OEM covers in the truck. the piece you fitted looks like it will do more damage than protect. Richard Zaja slid down the road on sat and reordered a new carbon cover yest. it did its job well. protected the OEM cover and stopped oilling T3 for the rest of us behind. that was most of us. old fart is still too fast

j-rad
17-06-2009, 12:39 PM
You make something similar? So yours won't do damage as opposed to what I've got???

I got mine from RATEDR mainly here's a pic from the site but it seems to be closer to the bike than mine, the bottom of mine seems to stick an AWFUL way out from the bike and I can see how that would damage things further.....so maybe I've installed incorrectly? *edit installed correctly*

j-rad
17-06-2009, 12:48 PM
Ok....I THINK I have mounted it incorrectly and needs to mount of the bolts with the clutch cover rather than the stator.....but then I'm wondering if then the stator won't be protected....

So is it the stator OR the clutch or BOTH that need to be protected/replaced?

So sorry for all of this, don't know any local racers to really ask :(

WET4URacing
17-06-2009, 01:17 PM
if u dont ask u will never know dude

all lateral covers that contain oil need to be covered or replaced with a HD cover. your model needs the Clutch , alt(stator) and starter gear covers dealt with. i gave you 3 links to click. 1 for each cover.

do you understand this now????
if not you can call 0416215134
we need more racin. dont be scared

Thanks mate, I think I just mis read one of your posts. I've got a stator cover, but need starter and clutch side sorted, we'll probably use the one I've bought and make a 'strap' or something similar that goes from the lower bolt of the starter slider > across the clutch cover and attached somewhere on there.......

Was hoping what I'd bought would be enough but don't want to get turned away on the day as I've already entered/paid etc so will go the overkill route first (also cheaper), will try and send a pic to one of the scrutineers to see what they think...

I saw a thread on here a while back that showed heaps of homemade options but can't find it for the life of me now!

Thanks again for that Wetty, not so much scared as just wanting to have it all 100% right :) been itching to go racing for a very long time so ain't nothing that would scare me away now! :D

Now if I could only work out how to connect the OBDII I'd be laughing! :lmao:

thanks again dude, see you up there by the sounds!

cheers

Hi mate, thanks for that but I've checked every page twice now and can't find any links or pics about engine cases.....there was a thread on here a while back that had stacks of pics in it showing everyones engine case protection, some dodgy as like a piece of strap metal across the cover, others had the full Woodcraft etc etc....

Feel free to whack me over the back of the head if I've missed it but I don't think it's that thread..........

I've talked to a mate Paul Campbell (RedBack Race Paint, 125cc racer here in canberra) and he seems to think if what I've got doesn't pass they may let me race so long as it's fixed for next time? Dunno about that myself but then I wonder how closely they check some of this stuff, which they will for the engine protection as it's easy to eye ball but yeh, don't want to arrive on the day, have forked out all this cash and get turned away on a technicality ? :dohsmiley: would just be my luck :D

Thanks mate, they look the goods but too much $$$

Most likely will use the $50 slider and fabricate something that bolts onto that and over the clutch cover itself....for cheap cheap :)

Yeh I'd love one :) but that and the clutch cover ($165) will set me back more than what I have atm so will have to go the dodgy route, but will definately look at yours when $$ permits!

Thanks heaps though.....question was about the ones that Specs posted up but they seem only to be Clutch covers so yeh I can buy one of those and your starter cover for like 260ish which is better again but more than what I have UNLESS i just cant get around it!

Still looking for that thread that showed everyones home made jobbies, just CANNOT find it! Maybe I was dreaming........

ahhh my bad mate :ayyy: the way things are going I may end up needing one but leaving it damned late now. we'll have a crack tomorrow night and by friday I'll know, but then then too late to order.

Initially I thought these looked REALLY good but the bit about lockwiring and there being no holes for the bolts...hmmmmmm...on second inspecting I see now :dohsmiley:
http://www.oppracing.com/images/3084...000-2005-2006/

might have to make do for one race and sort it for next as I agree, I'd rather something that suits the rest of the bike rather than making it look like crap and also agree on your earlier diagnosis, the slider in place atm WILL tear out in crash as front on/lower side sticks out WAAAAY too far. NOW I find out the part I ordered was more aimed at road bikes so doesn't suit so well.......should've ordered those covers from you a month ago :lmao:

had 2 flat tyres last track day on new slicks and had to buy a new rear from the gys, also bought a set of wets so was hoping that was the last of the big expenses.....

Where was that I read somewhere about this sport being expensive :dohsmiley: :D

Thank christ for wives who ride hey!
