Yes he did but didn't do to well. I hear through the grape vine in the end he couldn't get tyres & had to resort to using other teams seconds because the tyre manufactures wouldn't supply him. Why you ask because he would bag them out in the press & you tend to burn bridges doing that.

Very true. WG could write a book on how to make friends & influence people. However he did set pole at Bathurst one year & was driving like a demon. Dont know if he ever managed to finish the race in the years he attempted it :confused1: My brain is a bit hazy but he may have squeezed in a 3rd place one year which is more than a lot of life time racers could say.

Triple World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss looks on the verge of a new career in V8 Supercar racing after an impressive test at Queensland Raceway in Australia on Thursday.

Bayliss, who retired from motorcycle racing at the end of last season, completed over 80 laps in Craig Lowndes' 2009 Team Vodafone car - which weighs 1450kg, boasts over 600hp, and offers extreme braking forces and high corner grip.

A sighting lap with Lowndes in the passenger seat allowed Bayliss to become familiar with the circuit and its unique bumpy sections, before Troy's legendary competitive instinct took over.

Bayliss was relentless in his pursuit of lower lap times; his braking became more confident while his throttle application was measured and smooth, helping to maintain traction out of each of the seven corners.

After each five-lap run the MotoGP race winner returned to the pits for feedback from engineer Jeremy Moore while sharing his own thoughts.

By the end of the day, Bayliss had set a best lap time less than half a second shy of the mark set by triple V8 Supercar champion Lowndes.

?That was a dream come true,? Bayliss admitted. ?I have been a huge fan of V8 Supercars for a long time and to finally get some laps in one felt amazing.

?A lot of the on-track principals transfer between the bike and the car and once the excitement of the first few laps wore off I felt like I was back at the office trying to perfect my corners and reduce my lap times.

?I can't thank Team Vodafone enough, they have been fantastic and extremely patient with me as I worked my way through today's sessions."
Bayliss, who recently tested a Ducati MotoGP bike, was already considering a new career in V8 Supercars - and immediately stated his intention to return to the cockpit as soon as possible.

?I can honestly say I have the bug, I definitely want to do more laps and try and get out there in either the Development Series or the endurance races,? Bayliss confirmed.

Team Vodafone principal Roland Dane said Thursday's evaluation showed the WSBK champion's natural aptitude for all forms of motorsport - and believes Bayliss is already capable of 'mid grid' performances.

?Troy has really hit the ground running, he is the consummate professional,? said Dane. ?He is used to working in the top league of European motorsport, therefore there is nothing more we can teach him about procedures.

?He has fitted in with our team very well and is straight on the money lap time wise. If he raced at Willowbank tomorrow in our category he would be mid grid immediately.

?There are probably a few drivers in the championship that will need to watch their backs now,? Dane acknowledged.

Seven-times World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley also took part in the test, completing 20-laps in Lowndes' Supercar.

It would be good to see troy out with the V8 crowd , mixing it with them on the track. I have no doubt that he would be competitive but it all depends on who and what team he ends up with , from what i was reading during the week if your not in a ford and one of the top 3 then forget it , your just circulating each race meet(not my words), i haven't watched the v8's for a few years so I'm not up on who's competitive except for news reports, and it seems wincup has it sawn up almost .

Is it comfirmed for next year?? I do hope he does get a drive with 888, they are the gun team atm. I just hope the other drivers dont knock him around like they did with Gardiner. They seem to hate the fact that a bike rider can jump in a car & beat them. Gregg Hansford did the same thing. But he had the might of the Moffet team behind him & the other drivers didnt give him to much stick. The same cant be said for Gardiner. He just got punnted every chance they got.
I think if Troy goes to 888 he might get looked after a bit. The smartarses dont F##k the Rolan Dane to much, hes a heavy hitter & wouldnt put up with it.
Go Troy!!!!

Gardiner was a tool and carried on like one, he thought the world owed him something, it had nothing to do with him being a biker.I don't think for one minute Troy wouldn't be able to mix it with them in all facets of racing ,he's aggressive when he needs to be. To me the success 888 is having is because there linked to the one of the largest motor sport companies on the planet and unlimited $$$ , the real champ in this series is Lee Holdsworth from Garry Rogers racing , it's a low budget team finishing in the top 10 most races and even top 5 a lot of the time.

He will get a drive because he has the coin V8's is all about the coin

Like any form of motorsport you could be the best rider/driver in the world but if you don't have the $$$$ behind you to get a start your fooked (in most cases anyway)

Sorry for speaking..:baby:

every things cool :) i went to bathurst when gardiner (coca cola car) smashed out going up the mountain ,we where in the pits that day with the company i was working for and all up and down the pits that day people where saying what a tool wayne is and was being that day, but it may have been them and the pressure of the day but i have seen him a few times at work and when things go wrong it never seemed to be his fault.
I have to say that in most cases he was more approachable than mark skaife is or was.

sbutler
22-06-2009, 12:06 AM
Must have been when he has that real tool Crompton driving for him. I know he can be had to get on with. Bit he is a champ & you dont get there by being friends with everyone. I know everytime I have ever spoken to him he has be very approachable, & friendly. It might be because we had a bit of common ground, namely, racing. We had some of the same friends, & both struggled when we first started racing. He just had a lot more talent that I did.
I still wont step back on what I said in my post. He was treated like a lepper. Larry Perkins, Dick Johnson & many of the old chargers resented the fact, that the he had the money to buy & run his own team with big sponsorship money that they couldnt get.
He got Holden backing/$$ he got Coke backing/$$, & of cause had no problem attracting sponsors. They hammered him, end of story. He did very well in Japan winning the jap sportscar title many times before joining the V8 ranks here.
As a rider he was great, as a driver equal to any here or overseas. A very good business man.
If Troy get a drive with 888 he will be cold shouldered, just like Gardiner, but he'll have Dane to fend of the bullies. Gardiner didnt have that luxary. He had to fight for his own suvival. That was all I was saying.
Racing cars is easy compaired to moto GP or superbike racing. I have done both & I can tell you which one is easer.
Troy will nail it dont worry about that.

While it may not be wild speculation, at best it would appear to be speculation none the less.

Let's not forget the April Fools prank this year where it was announced that Bayliss would launch his own team and ride in the 2010 Aust Superbikes.

Sucked plenty in

It seems more than speculation, those are his very own words: http://www.motosprint.it/sbk/superbike/2009/09/25-1074/Bayliss+vuole+tornare+a+correre (Voglio tornare a correre in Superbike - I want to return to Superbike)
Unless you're suggesting that they totally made it up? Sure, anything is possible, I guess.

Whether he does manage a comeback is yet to be seen, it depends on too many things.

I never like these 'comebacks' myself, I don't know, it somehow feels that SBK has now moved on ... even if I really like the bloke.

Extract from MotoSport forums -

With both Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio back at Ducati for next year, Bayliss is reportedly looking around for other options. According to MotoSprint, Aprilia boss Giampiero Sacchi was the first to prick up his ears upon hearing the news that Bayliss might be available, and the Australian could potentially find a seat alongside that other veteran, Max Biaggi next year. There is even speculation that Bayliss could fill in for the injured Shinya Nakano for the rest of the season, but his contract as a representative of Ducati would get in the way of this. Just how great an obstacle this would pose remains to be seen.

Not sure how this ties in with his V8 drive so i'm calling BS but would be good if true.
