View Full Version : What mounting points are ideal on a bike?
I'm building a new custom bracket for my 400 project. I've made a mobile/gps/mp3 device cradle which made me consider.. what else.
I've got the time displayed on the speedo/phone so don't need another clock. I'm thinking perhaps a small money pouch, somewhere to quickly stow a camera for easy access. Maybe a small digicam mount to take pics whilst riding? A beverage holder? a 12" black ribbed knobbler?
Suggestions?

re your money pouch comment... for people going through manual tollgates, etc I can recommend a hide-a-key box with the exact change in it. magnetised to the tank just empty it at the gate. no need to fumble with gloves and pockets.
I always wanted to put cupholders in my Across for maccas cups (figured one coat hanger would be enough for securing two large drinks), but with the GSXR i've given up on carrying anything other than a small bottle in the tail.

Could always go a coffee machine on the back. You could stop anywhere and anytime for a cuppa.
Thougth about that ages ago on the VFR....but alas....still haven't gotten round to it.
So far the best idea I've been given is a ciggarette lighter attachment.

Lmao!!!
Show us yer pics!
I was daydreaming about building my own display - LCD screen with some dials and a behind-the-scenes data recorder - and would love to see what you've done.
I was modifying a Sony PSP and whilst I can do all the nerdy programming, I could only do some of the electronics and none of the housing.

I'm going to shift the temp guage above the speedo unit to make room for a phone/gps mount and a 12V charging point. Once it's all sprayed black it will look a bit cleaner.
Here's the bike. Pending spray job.

+1.......
From where this bike came from she already looks stunning to me.
I bought it as a wreck and fixed it up as per original bits. She got royally crashed again so the restore started again, but this time I stuck a 954 front cowl on.

That bike took turn 1 at the creek at 180, and lost.
Saf bought and did a great job on it, had it restored registered, then oxley won.
Have no doubt that bike will look the biz in no time again, Saf is one dedicated bloke..

how about a pocket for nuts and bolts..... to throw at offending cage driver windscreens.... or a small baton, for knocking off those neglected side mirrors.
(sorry, had a rough day.)
Yeah it is a money pit. I've spent more on the bike than it's worth but that's nothing new about motor vehicles, now is it.
I'll tell you why it's in my garage. My missus is only a small girl and she got sick of riding 250cc bikes well into her full licence. We bought it on the cheap as a project as the 400 was the right size for her but had a bit more poke than her 250RR. Whilst putting it together for the first time we even expermented with a brief 600 purchase but it was too tall and too heavy for her. We finally got the 400 restored and painted, took her up for a holiday on the oxley, had a great time. That little 400 corners better than anything I've ever ridden. She binned it down thunderbolts and it sat in the garage for another eternity.
I finally started working on it again as she's been without a bike for way too long. I repaired some of the fairings including the original front cowl, but whilst sitting in the garage tinkering away I realised I have several spare 954 bits including a couple of front cowls and headlamps... why not, just for a laugh eh. :)
I don't have a welder or such so used some brackets and bolts. It's quite sturdy and when painted you won't even see 'em. When the whole bike has a lick of black and purple 2 pack I'm sure you'd have something more positive to say, but thanks for your input huh.

Keep your old spark plugs. They make good projectiles. ;)

Just put a Tyga cowl on that tail (no idea how much those cost), get it all painted and she'll look unreal. problem is she'll look faster than she is. But since I'm a 400cc fan I'll give the thumbs up everytime you ride by!:ayyy:
I was thinking along similar lines. When I'm spraying the fairing I'm going to see if I can get a spare 954 duck tail to fit.
She's got a magnum race pipe too, so the sound is quite obnoxious. Hopefully she won't get done for street racing.

dude abort that child.... now!
:(
Ok, so I trash a unique project and go and buy another camembert Suzuki, just like everyone else. Maybe I'll put a bit of bling on it, just like everyone else.
That would be great, wouldn't it. http://smiliesftw.com/x/eekfacepalm.gif

Definately needs a smaller rear cowl to make the rear smaller, but im interested to see it painted.
Slow beavering has paid off; She's almost ready for registration!
Here's the cluster. The cradle can accommodate either a phone or GPS unit. I've going to hook up a 12V outlet for charging devices. Here it's holding KJ's crackberry. The entire bracket still needs to be painted black with some rustguard and the wiring loom tidied and tucked away.

I decided on a black on black paint job, with black sticker kit. It's very vague in poor lighting but in daylight the stickers stand out nicely. This is a rather crappy quality but close up shot of the tank where the bog was.

Customised 954 headlamp on low beam. The lens has been altered to accommodate the 400's original headlamps inside the 954 assembly.

No wing mirrors yet, and that front wheel needs painting. You can barely see the stickers from a distance.

I had to reroute the air ducts through to the front. This was fairly challenging but got it to work with some garden variety irrigation tubing and the original air intake mounts.

There's plenty more fiddly stuff that's going to consume some more time but it's coming along nicely and is starting to once again resemble a bike rather than an icon of frustration.:ayyy:

do you mean mounted something like this? thats just a camera, but could hook up one of those lcd displays for the power commander in the same fashion.

+1 - I wish I had the skills and patience to take on a project. I wired up some LED number plate "bolts" on the weekend - took me a couple of hours

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and whilst I do agree with many respects to an aversion to understand such a project it is still satisfying as the bike serves a purpose. If you're a short arse you would appreciate it.
Despite the piss-shit rain I took it for a spin tonight. She needs a tune but otherwise pulls like a mule. A 400cc mule. :)

Still think you need a nice tail though to match that awesome front end job!
I actually looked at the Tyga website but it looks like they don't have fairing for NC23's anymore. :confused1:
