View Full Version : Rim straightening + new tyre

Hi,

Apart from looking for a new front tyre, my front rim has a buckle in it that's not too bad, but I want it repaired while i'm getting new front rubber put on.

Will just about any MC tyre shop be able to do a good job straightening it out or should I go with any particularly good shops just to be sure?

I'm expecting that they'll both get done at the same place (but i'm flexible on that as the wheel will be off the bike, not a ride in job) so hopefully I can still get tyres at a good deal where ever the rim gets fixed.

Any suggestions within reasonable distance of Blacktown or Parra?
Penrith, etc is a bit of a stretch, but if they did good work and good deals on tyres i'd be there in a flash.

Cheers,
Trev

For the rim repair you need to go to Laurie Alderton, 2/10 Long St, Smithfeild NSW 2164, 02 9609 2889

Front tyre, even i can help you http://www.nswroadandtrackbikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8832 :):):)
(Awesome dual compound tyre BTW :ayyy:)

Cheers,
Gave him a call and he said it'll be 90-100 to fix the rim.

is that a decent price?

what tyre you got on the back?

Dunlop sportmax... nothing special I've heard, but I can't justify throwing out rubber that's only about 20% used.
I'm hoping there's not going to be any wierdness from getting a grippier front than the rear.

Anyone want to buy a used sportmax so I can get a full set? :p

the wierdness will come from different profiles of tyres not from the compound.

Is the rim buckled or dented. When I had a slick fitted at the track the guy showed me the dent in the rim.
He said 90% of wheels he does are this way. If it's not to bad save your money.

Yea, but how much is 'too bad'? No way would I be risking it, you're on a bike not in a car. I guess if it's only slight and you only ride to the shops and back then maybe, but not if you get to high speeds .... or for the track, where there's a fair bit of pressure on the tyres in every direction.

For 90 bucks ... you've gotta be kidding (that's a fair price, BTW).

I agree. I'd be fairly concerned if my rim wasn't true and I was riding round on it. Too much to risk regardless of where you're riding, and for the price you'd be mad not to.

You would have to be a moron not to fix it for that money!!

Sure if it's real bad, fix it.You can tell when the wheel is off how bad. If the bead doesn't seat right or it's elliptical. But most are the result of bumping up tall driveway lips or from wheelies. Not everyone has 90 bucks to throw at something that might not need repair. Just offering my opinion to the question asked. If your unsure of how good or bad it might be, ask the repairer for an honest answer.

Nothing wrong with that :ayyy:
I assumed that it's a little more than a 'scratch' though, as Harte said the rim has a 'buckle in it'.

All in the wording again captain. One persons definition of buckle is anothers dent. Get it checked Harte and repaired if it will give you piece of mind because that's very important to your pyschie when your riding.

Thanks guys,
I don't know your definition of a dent vs a buckle, but its definitely hit a driveway too hard and its noticable; and the possible source of vibration in the front wheel at higher speeds.
...the decision to fix is already made, just needed to know where :)

...the wheel is off the bike already and waiting to go to the guy in smithfield.

...I had both the front and back off actually and cleaned up the polish job on the edges, could use an hour with a power buffer to make em real shmick, but they look pretty sweet already.

Here's a quick pic of the polished edge.

They need way too much maintenance to keep clean IMO. It's alright if you want a bling bike, but it adds nothing to track performance so heh, does nothing for me.

Didn't do a new polish job... just finishing off what the previous owner started. There were a few specs of paint left and he hadn't polished under the balance weight :dohsmiley:

I gave em a clean then got rid of the random specs, stripped under the balance and replaced it and they are lookin good again.

I don't ride as often now, so the chain will probably get cleaned every other ride and the wheels will get wiped off the same or more often. This bike gets more looks than most others... It just stands out and thats one of the reasons I love it and am putting the effort into fixing it up.

My r6 has a bent front wheel.

It causes a slight bend in the tyre but I cant feel it

Hi Harte,
Did you get the wheel straightened? I'm about to take my 6R rim in to him. How'd you go? Pleased with the results?

6ixxer

haven't picked it up from him yet.

Will let you know if it meets my approval afterwards. I shouldn't be able to tell there was ever a buckle in it.

No, but there will probably be a little discoloration where they had to heat it up.

Turtle

I didn't think they would heat them as they are heated when made...

They certainly did when they fixed the buckle in my rim, Ray.

Well you learn something everyday...........like never take your wheels to where you got them fixed...........does this mean the wheel will bend or break easier now that the metalurgy has been changed ?

Captain

Well, I got it done by Laurie, if you know more about straightening wheels than he does then you should let him know.
Seriously though, I have no idea whether is does anything to the structure of the metal ... but from my tech days I recall something about the rate of cooling being important (you stuff it up by cooling it too fast ... or was that too slow?). Heating per se might not necessarily be a bad thing. No idea.

The speed of cooling depends on how "Tempered" you want it...yeah you're right..

Any news on the front rim? I just got a big dent in mine and the front end feels very funny, but I think that's because there's something not right with my forks (damping).

I got my rim straightened by Alderton and I'm really pleased with the results. This was my rim

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3504/3305418239_069e5cb3a4_b.jpg

When I got it back, it was straight as with no discoloration or anything - a few marks where he put it back into place but seriously, I looked for where it was dented in the first place and it took me a good 5 mins to work out where it was.

Don't know how that compares to yours, but I was very happy with the results.

Thanks for the update, my wheels is a bit worse off than your one.

Cedric

Hi Nuff,

You could do worse than getting him to check it out for you. Doesn't seem like the guy to BS you and for $90 it's fairly cheap

I will, but since bike (and scooters) are my only transport, it's hard for me to get the wheel only to him.

Here's the pics of my rim.

I reckon that'd be a no brainer for him.. just need to get to him eh?
I had my rim back within 24 hours so if you state you need it back pronto then I found him happy to accommodate that request.

well i couldn't tell where the buckle was....

discoloration apparently is only in the paint when they have to heat it, but mine didn't need heat and there's no paint on my edges anyway.
