Ulysses member Paul Cheetham will be looking after traders during the AGM.
MORE than 125 traders and exhibitors will showcase their goods and enjoy the unique atmosphere of a Ulysses motorcycle club AGM at Penrith from March 16-22.
There will be indoor and outdoor stalls at the Panthers Exhibition grounds, with something for everyone, ranging from bike tours, trikes, camper trailers for bikes, jewellery and clothing.
Major bike manufacturers will also show off their latest models and spare parts.
“Members can also watch unique glass art, see how a rocking horse is made, check out leather work and the biggest range of bike bits you have ever seen,” traders director for the event Paul Cheetham said.
“This Ulysses AGM will be the biggest thing ever to hit Penrith Valley, bigger than the Olympics.
“We expect more than 4000 of our members over the one to two weeks to eat, drink, sleep, be entertained and shop.”
Mr Cheetham said the members would visit tourist sites in the Penrith, Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury areas while “spending up big”
“The public are welcome into the traders area on Saturday after our grand parade through High St,” he said.
Mr Cheetham has been a member of the biggest motorcycle club in the southern hemisphere since 2007.
“I joined Ulysses following a reunion of bank staffers where someone told me what a wonderful club it is,” he recalled.
“He told me how great it was to start riding a bike again and seeing the sights of our wonderful country after many years of the family cycle.
“Following my younger years of motorbike riding I was keen to do it all over again so I joined the local Nepean branch two years ago,” Mr Cheetham explained.
“I was pleasantly surprised by how friendly, helpful and thoughtful every member of the Ulysses club is anywhere you go in Australia.
“Now we all enjoy the club motto to Grow Old Disgracefully.”
The Penrith resident has worked in banking and finance, the training and employment sector and also stints in non-profit community organisations.
The Ulysses 2009 AGM has several major local sponsors including Panthers, Penrith Council, Club Paceway, The Good Guys, Western Motorcycles and Cool Country 2KA. Other sponsors are ANZ bank, Telstra, QBE and Peter Stevens Imports.
The Ulysses Club for older motorcyclists is the largest organisation of its kind in Australia.
The original suggestion for a club for over 50s motorcyclists was put forward in a letter by Stephen Dearnley published in the August 1983 issue of Bike Australia.
The name Ulysses comes from a poem of the same title by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
It tells how the great Greek hero Ulysses, now middle-aged and securely in charge of his kingdom of Ithaca, is getting bored with things around him and longs to go adventuring again with his shipmates of old.
There are more than 120 branches in Australia which arrange rides and social functions for members.
There are sister clubs in New Zealand and South Africa, and fledgling branches in Canada and Germany, with plans to open in US and Britain.
Each year, club members from all around Australia, as well as some from overseas, travel for their AGM.
There is plenty of action around the AGM with motorcycle manufacturers and suppliers putting on trade displays and test rides of the latest machinery, a grand parade through the town, entertainment, social events and a church service.
