Looking at buying a 1000 tracky, It's not a slow one but I still am 2.06and dropping slow. What tyres should I run if it go's ahead while I grow into the bike. 209s or straight to slicks. I have warmers. Would I get better mileage from slicks and would I go med f hard r for EC. The bike has race suspension set up for my weight. Also don't know were to get good deals on new tyres any help would be much appreciated.

You know, I was in your position not very long ago, doing the same times and I contemplated which bike to buy. The unanimous advice I received from 'good' riders and coaches was to go to a 600 rather than a 1000, as I would learn much better and it would be safer too. Not saying you must do the same, if you have your heart set on a 1000 go for it IMO .... just passing on some of the advice I received (and I'm happy I took it up, to be honest).

I know I should be getting a 600 but my love is big bores and I am gentle with the Right fist so I don't see a prob exept tyre wear+ I"m in it for fun not to become a pro racer. I would consider a late gixxer 750 if at the reight price but would prob have to build one . What tyres do you run and from youre exp what are youre reasons for the 600 being the right choice

I'm using Pilot Powers 2CT, but I also use the bike for ocassional road riding so slicks are out.
Look, I'm happy with the 600, extremely so but I do miss the torque of a big bike on the street (I rode a CBR1100XX before this) - but only on the street, it's not an issue on track.
Basically I'm told it will teach me to corner, as the 600's carry higher speeds through the turns. It should also be a little safer, as there's less likelyhood of the feared highside, and it won't exhaust you as much, as the bigger bikes are quite a handful to throw around. It's much easier on the tyres too, and they should last a fair bit longer on a 600.

I used second hand slicks until i got quicker.. Cheap and usually have more than enough life left in them.. I use brand newies now though.. Until you get under 1.50-48's it aint worth worry about

Are the racetecs the slick or treaded tyre. I run M1s and M3s now and don't need more grip but I can't get em for $350 a set any more.

honestly it wont matter at 2.06, slicks or treaded, i changed from dunlop slicks to dunlop 200/55 R and 211 F for my old banger R1. second hand at $200 a set. plenty of tread, feel great and post a 46 or something. dont bother looking anymore. I'll run anything with a bit of tread. bridgys, metz, Its about confidence, if u feel happy then its good. find a source for the dunlops if you can, they are my fav's. I agree with the captian re 600's. heaps of fun and safer, are you at OP this weekend?

when i was doing 2.06s i had just standard pilot powers on and they offer enough grip even when going below 2.00s to mid 1.50s

mate i do flat 2.00 on pilot roads, they are a touring tyre, pilot powers or equivalent are good down to a 1.50 easy

Im with turtle, metzeler racetecs are the shizle, alittle on the pricey side though, sticky as S%IT to a blanket, and they have loads more heat siiiiiickels than any other race tyre b4 u hit slicks, so they have pretty good mileage 2.. their evin great in the rain.

Bridgestone BT002, well you can't get BT002 I think they are now BT003. They are a street legal race tyre, basically have tread until the last 15mm (approx). These tyres inspire confidence. I had a GSXR1000 with standard road tyres, changed to the Bt002 and could not believe how good they were. Grip was sensational, I am now running Dunlop slicks and can not fault them. Suggest you ask for the street legal race tyre as they are great stepping stone from street tyre to a track tyre.

With regards to a 1000cc bike or not. The biggest issue is not the weight (there is little difference in weight now) but the ability to screw on the power. I went from a an 03 GSXR1000 (wheelie machine) to a 97 ZX7r completely stock and was able to go faster on the 7 simply because I knew I could come out of the turns flat stick without a worry in the world and that thing was a heavy beast too!

My 2 cents :)

On the bike you should buy issue well the common thing is the smaller capacity bike will let you learn & go faster quicker mainly because it has less power so throttle control is a little easier. There is also the weight issue BUT most modern 1000cc sports bikes don't really weigh that much more than a 600cc.

The simple choice is buy whatever floats your boat as any motorcycle can bite you hard if not trated with respect at speed.

Tyres well slicks are great & you will probably get better life from them but the one down side is if track is ever damp or wet you can't ride. If your just starting out you don't need slicks & with a modern sports tyre there isn't much difference except with grooved tyre you can use in any condition at the track. As for what tyre to chose well there all good you just really need to find one that suits you so any high end sports tyre from any brand will more than do the job. I have used Pirelli Super Corsa, Bridgestone 002 (now called 003) & can't fault either.

The Bridgestone 002's (if you can still get them) and new 003's are awesome but are way too expensive now. I just picked up a set of Dunlop GP racer slicks for under $450 from Castle Hill Motorcycles. I can't wait to give them a try on Saturday at EC.

i'd go pilot powers.. they are cheap(compared to most others) reliable and easy to source...

you get decent wear life out of them..i was doing 2 track days then selling the rear for $150 to road riders.. i can confirm they are good for 1.50's on a stock 600 at the creek and low 20's at OP with the old bus stop.. and im sure a decent rider would run rings around me on them:ayyy:

but seriously at our pace if its black and round its not the tools slowing you down its the rider:ayyy: i always like to refer to the bloke who took a stock blade and done mid to high 30's on it at the creek,, really brings all us punters and wannabes back to reality:dohsmiley::lmao:

Thanks for all the good advice,so much I am still unsure. Think I will look for cheap used treadeds till I start to chew that left side off too fast. Still love bikes with balls and prefer to muscle it than think it into turns. Hopfully my wrist action will stop me getting my arse down before my knee. Better to go faster slowly than to overtake my own bike.

Hmm, yes but this guy won an oz championship.

Perhaps a bucket load of skill/experience came into the equation.

RACETECS are treaded but very little, i have MEZ Slicks which are the same tyre but full slicks.......DanOz used to use (RACETECS) them also , on his Speed Triple and got 10 Trackdays on the front and 8 Trackdays on the rear, in between all these TD's he used the bike to commute. Alex had them on his 600RR and he got 2 Snowies trips 2000k's each, 2 trackdays, and 3000k's commuting !!!!

Just buy some dunlop slicks. They are only like $350 now and you should get 4-6 track days out of them depending on how hard the TL tears up rears. pretty hard i supose.

Works out to $80 or so each track day, which is not too bad for the guarantee of max grip!!!

Don't skimp on tyres!!!!!!!
Anything else but not them!!!!!!

Managed to get the last pair of 002's from Craig White last Monday at WP (Tex fitted them on his behalf:ayyy:) Good price too- went well and hope to get another TD at OP tomorow:clap: I guess at my pace a few more should be easy:)
