Some of you may already be aware of this frustrating new law. I can honestly say i didnt know it was in force but do recall hearing something about it a while back.

As of July 08, if you are on your provisional (P) license, red or green, car or bike and happen to have it suspended for any reason, you automatically get sent back to the beginning of your time on that license when you reapply after your time served.

This law got me good. When i lost my license 12 months ago (before the new laws), i was only a matter of weeks away from upgrading to my full license. Last weekend i went to apply for my license again and instead of getting it back exactly how it was like every one assured me of, i get handed a fresh P's license and told to come back in 12 months to upgrade to my fulls. Not happy Jan.

I dont know if this is for all kinds of suspensions, so you will have to check yourself, but from the sounds of it, any kind of suspension whether it is 3 months or 3 years, you go back to the start and do it all again.

Which brings me to my second point.

My 250 streetfighter project is no where near finished so im looking around for a learner legal bike that will do me for the next 12 months.

Ideally id like another zx2r/zx250r/zxr250 what ever you prefer to call it, but im willing to consider any other bikes as long as they have a little bit of guts and arent rusted to the sh*thouse. Rego a must as i just want to get on and go.

If anyone knows of anyone selling a 250cc-500cc learner legal bike, pm me or post it up here.

And if your on your Ps like me, be very careful out there. A small slip up could easily mean you go right back to the beginning. A-holes!

Wow didn't no u went back to the start of ur time, i was gunna stop riding on the road for the next 10 months just incase i had to wait 3months longer. Even more satisfied with my decision now. I'm selling a cbr250r for 3900 w/o rego (it expires on 03 jan) or 4200 with its in the for sale section if your interested.

The road toll is a touchy subject. All I can say is it's beneficial politically to take a hardline, knee jerk reaction which comes down hard on P platers. Everybody speeds every now and then, but to be penalised for 5km/h over on a straight stretch of road in broad daylight and be suspended is ridiculous. P platers aren't all 17 year old school students for whom a car is a luxury (sorry, generalisation).. Older people who are later in life to receive their licence and depend on it for work and to support their families will find it difficult if subjected to this law.. It's a band aid fix.

Having said that, you do have to draw a line in the sand somewhere.. I'm just thankful I got my full licence before all of this nonsense..

I almost feel a little for you P platers .. but I swear in all honesty that 7 times out of 10 on Southern Cross Drive, my daily run to & from the office, any accidents I see or pass involve a P plater, thus making the rest of you normal P platers victims of statistics that the lawmakers will use in order to clamp down on anything they can involving P plate drivers & licensing.

I sort of agree with the new law..... BUT..

What I dont agree with is that most police do not know about this new law..or if they do then they need to take it into account when assessing if to nick the "P" plater as now a ban has a greater significance..

As said ealier... If the people you are trying to "teach a lesson", are not aware of the consequences until too late, then that itself defeats all purposes (apart from the revenue making)..

Tough law that really won't change anything. The reality is the majority do not think about the consequences until after the fact and then go I didn't expect to be treated so harshly. The media portray the one off incidents where some low life gets let off easy but forget about the majority that are not.

PS if you are interested I have a mate with a Yamaha 250 zeal, that he should sell as he never rides it. Probably would want less then $3000.

so what ya saying if they were suspended b4 this date than it wavers this. I feel ya pain for the p'platers who do drive/ride like everybody else. But the ones who just have to beat everybody and always have to drive like a dickhead i hope they stay on their p's till they finally get the message.

I'm speakin as a RP1 rider who has a full MR licence, not a teen with no road experience still in high school, cant agree more. Fair enough for those 17's in cars but not 20+ with full licences. Perhaps restrict under 30s who have a full licence bike wise (LAMs) only, allow us to do 110 and have that stupid speed and lose your licence business lifted

From what ive learnt, once a law is made we have no choice but to deal with it. As for the hooning of immature riders, i totally agree. In my case i think the law could use a bit of common sense when dealing out sentences.

Basic run down of my story, just to set the record straight was this.

4 years ago i got sent to court for riding a 50cc pocket bike on the road. Mistake 1 - first offence.

Got my L's and rode sensibly and hardly ever did anything 'hoon' like.

Never been fined for speeding, drink driving, reckless behavior or anything of that nature. What got me was riding a 750cc on my P's which didnt have rego or insurance. There goes all my points in one hit. That was mistake 2 which cost me 3 months off the road. This is where i should have locked the bike away in the garage. But noooo.

Mistake 3 saw me riding on my suspension. 2nd offense, instant 12 month suspension.

I pleaded with the court to let me just ride to work and back providing all my fines were paid and i did everything by the book from that moment on.

He didnt buy this and slapped me with my sentence.

The only thing that pisses me off is whenever im out on the road these days - in the missus's passenger seat - i see so many dickheads speeding, driving dangerously and acting like complete idiots while here's me, banned from the road for a year because i rode a 'big bike' a couple of times, which i was in fact more than capable of riding with complete control and responsibility.

Yes i know it was wrong, but you look at the bigger picture. Ive never caused any harm to any one on the road, ive got a pretty clean record compared to most riders and drivers out there, and yet no consideration was even thought about when i pleaded for some leniency.

Anyhoo, its in the past now and i once again hold a ticket to ride. Albeit a restricted provisional license, but hey, i now appreciate what i have a hell of a lot more than i did before.

Oh and wetty, thanks but ive owned 2 zzr's in the past and theres no way in hell im going back to one of those. Not bad bikes overall, just not for me.

Sorry for the rant. Just gets to me a little that most people think of 17 year testosterone filled boys when they think of P platers. Look at me. Im 25 and by the end of the year i will have had 4 years on a provisional license. If i wasnt broke and so stupid to not pay for rego id be the guy sitting next to you at the next set of lights sitting atop a zx10 and sweeping through corners like a pro over the next hill. All that holds me back is a bit of plastic and a bunch of arrogant suits who decide on these ridiculous laws.

Why done we just ban everyone driving, all the time...then there will be no road toll..

surely there can be no holes in this arguement :)

:pisslaugh:

I think the gf would be happy with that LOL.

But on topic, hasn't this been around some time?

Goin back round 6 years ago, was 10 months into my P's. Did something naughty (a whole other story), and lost my licence for 3 years. After a number of phone calls to the RTA during the 3 years, I was told each time that as I would be over 30 when I was due to get it back, I could go straight onto my full's.

So, on the day that I can apply to have the liscence re-instated, I front up to the RTA, only to be told that I had to start a fresh on my P's :argue:.

So either this has been round a while...or...the RTA screwed me over...again:mad:

Fk me! You poor bastard.

I guess in 3 years a number of laws could have been put in place that screwed you. Also the time frame - 3 years - thats a long time to be off the road. Maybe they did that to get you used to the road again on a smaller capacity bike.

But being 30, you definitely should have been able to go straight back onto your fulls. Sounds pretty fked to me.

The chick at the rta told me this P plater suspension restart law came in July 2008 or was it 2007 :confused1: pretty sure she said earlier this year. Im thinking it was around the time when all this no tolerance for P plater bullshit started.

Before too long you start seeing nothing but P platers on the road. With 4 friggin points, even parking in the wrong place will screw you up and cause you to cop a 3 month suspension followed by back to start of P's again. An endless cycle that will go on forever!

BTW, i found a cheap lil zx2r - 93 model. Will be picking it up this weekend :mod_smilie_rockwoot

Thanks to those guys who offered me their 250's :ayyy:
