That’s right, I’ve been conned by my cousin into buying a track bike.
He painted a wonderful picture and as usual, I fell for it. I hope he doesn’t ask me to jump off a cliff.
Mind you, this could mean the end of my wonderful family.

Any way, my question is, what do you guys recommend for a novice trakie?

We are thinking 04-05 Kwaka 636.

Also, any ideas on how to pay for it? News paper run, pizza delivery driver, donations.

Not a bad choice the 636. I looked at a couple myself but ended up finding a GSXR750 for the same price.

Any 600 will be a good choice, some better then others. My suggestion would be to hunt around for awhile and see what you get for your money. Try and find a bike that has had all the work done to it that you yourself would like to have done to it. It is generally much cheaper if someone else has done the work.

The things I looked for were something that ultimately could be road registered, not that I ever intend to do so, it is just that people prefer that so I figure it will make it easier to sell if I have to. Suspension, I got the bike with front and rear with all the work done it saved me the best part of $2000.

You will probably find more bikes available after Christmas when the racing season is done and people are looking to off load their race bike as they are either upgrading or getting out.

Try this link, you will find plenty to consider -http://www.aus-superbikes.com.au/xtremema.nsf/Main!OpenPage&Start=1&Count=550&Expand=5

Good luck, oh no idea how to pay for it.

the seller was desparate to sell it cos of a mortgage and ended up getting him down to $8.5k from $10k including all the spares listed! this site was the most recommended to me. another is bikehype.com.au. there's an 06 gixxer 600 in superstock form up for sale whicj i looked at but went with the R6 as better deal.

as for paying for it, well maybe becoming a gigolo..hehehe

Ok thanks for the price range. Become a gigolo? Honestly who would pay me for a good time? The missus is stuck, I tell her that she made her bed now she’s got to sleep in it lol.

How long before the adrenalin tap gets turned off?. I would like a bike that keeps me pumped with fear.

One of my weirdo mates had a 400 and he said that he got sick of trying to make it go faster. Down the straight he looked like he was rooting the tank.

As for selling a Kidney, I would rather donate them.

There is more to Track days then going fast down the striaght, like the thrill of doing really fast turns ,besides there is only one striaght @ EC but there is 12 turns...:mod_smilie_rockwoot........400's still do late 1:40's @ EC,think about it!

I think he was also refering to the acceleration out of the corners and that kind of stuff. He now rides an R6 and recons for his ability it's just right.

I personally would like a 600 so I don't get caught up in the buying and selling game too early.

Sub 1:50 is an achievment but getting towards 1:45 is flippin flyin.

Buy a 400 & have some fun. You are gonna get hosed on the straight but so what.
The fun part is the corners & you will have a ball on a 400.

Have a look at the youtube clip under my signature. Seriously hosed in a straight line but that means fuck all around the rest of the circuit.

Until :baby:

They're all Mick's and Gardner's down the strait but my buzz is when he hears the twin going round the outside in T1 or when I take him and his mates on the T2 aproach. Not that I'm quick yet but maybe they shit themselves from going too fast down the strait.

Small bike will teach you how to ride and corner.............I was marshalling for couple of years on RGV250 and could not believe how much fun it was. Also bought a CBR400 and on both those bikes was able to do 1.47's and they were standard.

As soon as I took the GSXR1000 back then (K1) back out after myfirst ride day I was doing low 40's....but it was from what I learnt on the small bikes.

Pluse there is no bigger thrill than tearing everyone up on the larger bikes.....even at Eastern Creek. Plus small bikes use hardly any rubber!!!

So whats that between , 3-4, 5-7, 7-8, and 9-10 again ? :dohsmiley::lmao: Its where all the gutless bikes are eaten, again and again and again.
Todays 600s are just as nimble in the turns as the 400 dinosours, just hold way more grunt where needed ;)

Yes that's what I'm thinking, small bikes getting overtaken on the sections between turns then needing to constantly make changes to corner entry and hampering the more experienced riders,:cursing: whereas a 600 would cope a little better. (see how I think of others)

I would hate to go and buy a 400 and not enjoy the track day because of that reason.
I'm sure I will be overtaken allot in the beginning, fair enough, but with practice and time, overtaking will lessen to make for a good day, yes?

"AWW, I don't know" decisions decisions.:confused1:

overtaking is overated!!

get a bike you can afford!!! make sure you crawl before you walk!

crashing a 600 is more expensive than 400 as such
dont forget you gotta buy tyres too and a fair few of them too, plus there are other costs to be factored in also... oil, tyre stands, warmers, race glass, repairs!! cost of track day too

as jace has said a heavier bike will chew tyres faster....

is it about overtaking... i hope not, its about cornering, nothing like blowing away 1000cc through the corners makes it all the more fun.....and track days are simply all about fun

Personally I would prefer a near stock bike.

When people say the suspension has been done, well thats a pretty general statement.

The more you ride the more you want your bike to do certain things and whats "done" for someone else isnt really what I personally like.

Using a 250 or 400 is cool, but it depends on how hard your willing to ride the thing. Its all entry, apex and exit speed on these things and without proper technique its the most susceptable time to wad it.

The 03/04 636 fits me OK. I dispise the 05/06 636 seating position. I never rode an 07/08 6r, sat on the 09 6r at the show and love the seating position.

I rode my 400 (my first tracky) for 3 years before my ability was getting close to it's limits and now I'm really enjoying the 600.

Don't write off a 400 as a great bike to learn track-craft on, operating costs are much lower as they are relatively gentle on tires and they tend to be a little more forgiving of learners whose ability is not as great as they think....

...& a 400cc bike, designed along whiles ago, will cost a lot more to set up sussie-wise than a recent 600 - cos it needs so many bits; many recent 6s have reasonable springs already there to use, even reasonably rebuildable shocks too - though that said using any OEM type unit with the heat of the track applying to it, will mean premature fade - 20K would be lucky!

Which could be begging the question, depending on how well we look at things prior to arriving somewhere and wondering why & how things happened to us... what is a track bike? Is it just something cheap? Something from the wreckers? Anything with some glass added to, and/or lights and number plate removed? A purpose built pleasure craft? Or maybe we ask if it is better or worse than the rego'd bikes on the public roads in terms of safety and performance?

Will a 400s parts gonna be cheaper? - is availability of spares a factor, as ebay makes sourcing 600 bits'n'bobs surely easier with a common bike?

I would definitely go for a 600 over a 400. Although I see the benefit in going to a more learner friendly/cheaper-to-run bike that will teach you the importance of corner speed, I think the 600 will have enough power to grow with you and have just as much cornering and handling ability. Plus as has been previously stated, they are much more common and easier to obtain parts for than an exotic JDM RVF400 surely..

My amateur advice? get a R6 (and I'm a die hard Kwaka fan..)
