I went a few years ago - bugger all there unless you are into Harley's or Scooters really.

If they haven't improved it's not worth the effort.

Agreed...its like visiting all the bike shops under one roof + dudes jumping shit on little pitbikes! It would be different if they debuted concept bikes & the like, but essentially, its a sales emporium!

It's only good if your looking for a new bike & can compare them all under one roof.

My only gripe is that you can never get a decent cup of coffee at these things.

Do you have to pay to be advertised to? ...

Basically yes.......... I do not know of any free trade shows.

The way I look at is, that for $17 (MA members get $2 off) you have all the distributors under one roof and within walking distance.

They do slug you for parking though.

I use to do these trade shows for work and believe me........ they are a real pain in the arse as the majority of people are just tyre kickers.... myself included.

They are moulded to your inner ear to provide the best protection against noise with the added bonus of being comfortable.

I bought one at the chemist, but the 'average' mouth is clearly different from mine :lmao:
I might have to get one custom made. A while back I posted up something about it, but no-one was interested. I made some enquiries and did an online search, and saved this in my 'favourites' but never chased it up. It seems to be made for motorcyclists: Power gel (http://www.shockdoctor.com/products/mouthguards/adult.aspx)

Incidentally, thay also have body armour ... you can never have too much protection (although just how practical this is I don't know..)

Just curious - I've never considered a mouthguard while riding. With a good full face helmet, it never occurred to me that I'd need extra protection in this form. I also don't recall seeing anyone at the track with them, but maybe I'm not paying attention.

Why do you feel that a mouthguard is necessary?

Is it something that is commonly worn?

Captain
19-11-2008, 07:15 AM
Well, I first got thinking about it when I noticed both Rossi and Stoner ride with them. When they come back to park ferme, sometimes you can see them handing it over to one of their team. So it's simple really; if they wear them, they must do so for a reason.

I also recall a rider coming off at OP, at the flip flop and he facedived into the ground. I don't know how he did it, but his teeth cut right through his top lip ...

I haven't seen any casual riders with them either, and it doesn't seem to be one of the more common injuries.

I see the point on guard protecting lips etc etc, but I personally would be more concerned with the risk of swallowing the damn thing, which would be more a fatal issue more than a cosmetic issue.

As far as I know it is more to do with grinding (or gritting?) your teeth when riding.

Captain
19-11-2008, 11:33 AM
You're funny Oggie :) have you ever worn a mouthgard? No way you could swallow one; I'm more worried about gagging, apparently you do quite a bit until you get used to the damn thing. Like I said, I bought one (1 size fits all my arse) and I thought I was going to vomit.

When I did some research, I read up quite a bit on mouth guards and yes, they can protect your teeth and gums/lips, but importantly they will prevent the shock from being transmitted by the jaw back to where the jaw hinges in your head etc, because that's where the read damage occurs and you break your jaw etc. Nasty stuff.

As far as I know it is more to do with grinding (or gritting?) your teeth when riding.
Do riders do that? That's an interesting topic (if a little embarrasing perhaps); I have wondered what to do whith my mouth while riding (no stupid comments, it's hard enough writing this) ... probably due to the pressure from the helmet on my cheecks, I suspect I'm riding with my mouth partly open ...

Dr freedom
19-11-2008, 11:41 AM
I changed the cheek pads in my lid .. Shoei TZR standard is 35mm, I put 33mm ones in & its much more comfortable.

The mouthguard one is interesting .. are there any riders that use one?

AG23
19-11-2008, 12:05 PM
Yeah, it's pretty common to grind your teeth when in the heat of a battle. I know a few who get sore teeth after they race (but still don't wear a mouthguard)!

Riders do many strange things when they are racing.

That's why when you watch Supercross on television and the mechanics write 'BREATH' on the pitboard - it's because when they are racing it's very common for riders to hold their breath when racing. A little reminder helps you consciously do it.

Captain
19-11-2008, 12:09 PM
Thanks Alex; it's the reason I was asking what I should do with my mouth :). I know that correct breathing is important in many sports ... probably all sports ... and with your mouth open this would be difficult to do (as you're supposed to breathe in with your nose...)

LOAFIE
19-11-2008, 12:19 PM
Hey Captain, a mates brother makes a mouthguard thats made primarilly for cronic snorers, but has other applications.
So the issue of swallowing mouth guards is not a prob, will see him tonite and get the details if you like.

If that's the case, then they're more likely to be wearing an "occlusal splint". These are made from a resilient acrylic, unlike sports-mouthguards which are vac-formed from softer silicon rubber.

Splints have to be custom made as, aside from protecting teeth from the effects of clenching/grinding, they have to perfectly balance the complicated jaw mechanism (think of a twin-axis hinge), whilst the jaw muscles are clamping every which way with pressures of up to 40-50psi!

Your a wealth of info Alex....thanks for the input.

Would people wear them just whilst out riding the twisties or on the track only...? I can understand the later but not everytime I got on a bike...

I find that if i ride with my mouth open, I bite the inside of my cheeks from the helmet pushing my chubby cheeks between my teeth at the back... it'd probably be pretty uncomfortable having a mouthguard in too...

I heard that as well, I vaguely remember something about being knocked out and swallowing/biting your tongue- the mouth guard stops this.

Dont quote me, it was a while ago

This is interesting, I found out I hold my breath when cornering. Then I went out and further noticed I dont exhale until I get on the gas.

Then I went out and tried to breath around a corner and physically couldnt- my riding position and leathers stopped my chest from expanding.

One guy I know is really bad and comes in red faced after riding.

.

Mouthguards won't stop tongue obstruction. Likewise when rugby players get knocked unconscious, they check the airway to ensure they're breathing, and remove the mouthguard if it's in the way.

Went there this arvo, it was OK I guess, some of the bikes I wanted to see where there, but not that many really.
Highlight for me was seeing and sitting on the KTM RC8, I really like it even if it feels a little 'plasticky' ... and perhaps not as refined as I expected it to. Still, you get the impresison that it would be a hot bike to ride.

.... and fark if that R1 is not ugly from the rear ...

What was the rest of the show like - were there plenty of accessories and clothing up for grabs, with "show specials" and the like?

Still not 100% that I'm getting to it tomorrow, but if it's worth it, I'll make the effort.

spotcom there were some good specials I saw on leathers, don't recall the brand but they were usually $ 1,900 and they were going for $ 1,200. I bought a summer jacket across the road, Action have a hall to themselves with 'show specials - a cheapie for $ 130, but if you put it next to the Dainese (discounted to $ 300) it's clear that it's superior in all but the name. Still looking for my 'perfect' summer jacket - given how hot it is downunder, you'd think that it would be easy to find a perforated leather jacket ...

Bigdog I must admit I totally missed the gixxer 1000, not intentionally honest, still not sure how I did that.

Dainese Delmar is a good summer perforated leather jacket from what my mate says....not cheap though (about $800)

It has a funky liner that lets the air circulate even better.....he usually has to wear a jumper underneath it when it's not sweltering.

I was there today, got a pair of the moulded earplugs and some Draggin Jeans, almost got one of those Kreiga backpacks too.
The 09 R1 looks good in the flesh, and the GSXR1000 looked pretty good too, there was a black & gold/copper one that looked pretty cool, I was impressed with the 750 & 600 GSXRs as well, I didn't like the CBR600RR as much, I'd rank the 600s Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda from the impression I got just on looks and how they felt to sit on.
The KTM RC8 was impressive side on and from behind, but I don't like the headlight etc.
The Benelli TNT2 would have to have been the most comfortable sports bike that I got to sit on at the show and looked great too.
The VMax looked pretty impressive up close, I'd get one of them before a Harley or anything cruiserish.
I'm over the BMWs, they either feel really plastically, or the bits of engine interfere with your legs (GP2 moto, K1200R etc).
In terms of apparrel, I'd have to say there was not much at all, some brands that you've never heard of for leather jackets etc but apart from Draggin & Hornee jeans it was pretty thin on the ground tbh.

What moulded plugs CG, hope they sort the prob mate. $$?? Name ??

Earmold Australia, they cost $60. I thought they were the 'insta-mold' (http://www.earmold.com.au/content/view/19/39/) ones.
I enquired about the ones with the sonic fllters in them and the guy talked me out of them, apparently they are only for musicians etc.
Yeah, I hope they fix this ringing in the right ear too, but I've had it for around 2-3 weeks now so who knows.
There is a 3 month wait for the specialist, so I'm considering a different one.
I'm going to have a go at swapping the yoshi slip-on back to the stock one, looking at the manual for the Yoshi it says that its not intended for freeway use, only track use...

Also, Kirk took a few photos at the show, so I'll see if we can get some in this thread.

Better get your ears checked......if they have been ringing for that long then you may have got tinnitis.

Other Causes of Ringing in Ears
Ear infection
Fluid in the ears
Medications (both Prescription and Non-prescription, notably aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
Aging (Presbycusis)
Ear trauma (such as from the noise of planes, firearms, or loud music)
Rarely, aneurysm or an acoustic neuroma (a benign tumor on the acoustic nerve).

so yeah....get it looked at sooner than later!

def my 1st and last time going 2 this show, just a big bike yard. if it wasn't for the moulded ear plugs, id say not worth it. but that's just my opinion. oh, and getting a bunch of free stickers for my new track bike!!

2 mobs doin the ear plugs. one with 2 sweaty old guys and another with 2 not bad looking chicks. no guessing where i got mine. will set u back $60 but a bit of hagglin and sweet talkin got me $50. a few attached pics!

Dainese Delmar is a good summer perforated leather jacket from what my mate says....not cheap though (about $800)

It has a funky liner that lets the air circulate even better.....he usually has to wear a jumper underneath it when it's not sweltering.

Looks like this
http://i42.photobucket.com/albums/e344/Motowheelscom/Dainese/2008%20collection/dainese_delmar_perf_jkt_wht_LG.jpg

That's the one I'm after :ayyy: .... do you know who sells them? Yes $ 800 is a lot, and the new Dainese jackets feels a lot 'softer' than their previous.

(I have seen the Delmar before, but not fully perforated like this one)

Well I went yesterday and thought it wasn't too bad. It was like going to Westfields rather than all seperate shops. There was something for everyone here. $17 admission fee.

Biggie, the GSXR1000 looked great (apart from the double exhaust but that's my personal opinion). When I saw the white GSXR750 I got the "wow" factor happening so when I saw the guy I bought my current bike from, we were a having "serious" chat about little bling improvements. Hmmmmmm.

Shawn Giles was there at Suzuki signing posters and having a chat.

Bought myself a puncture repair kit just in case one day ......

Favourite bike: $55,000 Bimoto R8. Make sure you have a look at this one.

That RC8 was pretty cool. fairly long wheel base, check the length of the chain if you go.

I was there last night for the specific reason to see our friend from the southern state ;)

Didn't think much of the Gixxer.

I like it overall, even the white with purple frame ... except the arse; those exhausts have gotta go. BTW, the salesman told us it will be around 20K. Given the price of the competition, at 24K they wouldn't sell many. I'd expect it to debut at 19K, but sell for 17, 17.5 after a few months.

A Toll HSV/ Rick Kelly inspired CBR? I thought I'd seen it all till then.

Never ceases to amaze me how many people enquire about a Hyosung.. it was chockers in their area.

The R1 rear end is a shocker.. everyone around it seemed to all agree, it looks bad.

Watched a guy wobble his way ontop of an RS4 Aprillia, only to then watch him fall off it & knock the bike next to him over as well lol. Aprillia people were not impressed .. it made their little section look a whole lot cheaper. They didnt use stands that were sturdy or mounted to the ground in some way.

The girls for this years show were rented from some agency that specialises in the cheaper end of town.. more quantity than quality I would say.. & even the quantity was down.

What about Pedbots vented rear disk .. something normal for you track folks, freaky to see close up tho.

Plenty more Italian bikes seem to come out with yer braided lines etc etc nowadays as well. Just like if you remember how big companies like Solace were in the early days, now you are not paying for anything unless Ford, Holden etc tint your windows prior & Solace dwindles away..

The black carbon fibre MV had a price tag of 185k on it as well.

None of the race bikes there had any fancy wavey disks n stuff on them either.
