View Full Version : The love of riding..

What is it that makes the love of riding for you ?

For me its the freedom, the perfect corner, the comradary, the feel of instant throttle and quick accelleration, etc.

Lately, the comradary aside, all else is gone for me as it seems there is a camera or an unmarked ready to take a shot of you farting.

Its become a form of transport, rides are no longer the fun they once were, and I actually cant wait to get home and do nothing :p.

Its just not happening for me anymore on the rd, race glass will be placed on order I think :mod_smilie_rockwoot

Good question.
I'm the first to admit that motorcycling is not a life long passion for me. I know it is for some, but not for me; I rode for a few years in my early 20's, and now I'm back. I say it's not a 'lifelong passion' because I know I cannot compare myself to those who have ridden their whole lives, where it's very much a lifestyle. Nevertheless ...

I love being 'able' to ride ... and seeing my skills improve.
I love going for a ride with good friends, stopping somewhere for a meal and a few laughs together.
I love going fast on the track, and seeing my times come down.
I love sitting on my bike for just a minute, before getting in the car to go to work ...

Hanging off the bike at double the recommended speed in the twisties does it for me, then stoping for food with others who share the same passion. I hope this isnt just a phase and i do it my whole life.

Its all about cutting loose and leaving the stress behind ,its great therapy ( the only therapy ). i agree not so much any more, it seems to be more about avoiding getting caught then stress relief.
If we didnt have Alcohol, cigg`s and bike`s there would be more people climbing clock towers with rifles.

For me it's the skill involved, tipping into a familiar corner, shifting my weight, seeing the apex dissapear under my knee, feeling the power as I get back on the throttle, hearing the chimney shouting behind me and seeing that brand new superbike getting closer and closer in front of me :ayyy:

Straight line speed doesn't do it for me, it's all about finding a great road with flowing corners and riding and chilling out with a great bunch of guys.

I had to commute an hour and a half for a few months and in the car it was painful, putting up with traffic, muppets in Dad's commodore trying to kill themselves and traffic lights. But on the bike I looked forward to my commute, queues for red lights ceased to exist, the M4 carpark became an easy 40km/h ride and the hot coffee when I get there became a necessity in the cooler months :ayyy: It was about 40 mins quicker on the bike than in the car, and I spent about $150 a fortnight less in fuel and tolls.

The Brotherhood of the Road

I love motorcycles, and I love riding. Like many of you, what first drew me to bikes was not just the experience of riding, but the feeling that I'd become part of a special community - a brotherhood, really. Nothing calms me more than a long ride down the highway, waving to the members of my beloved clan...

...Except when I pass Harley guys. I hate Harley guys. Hate, hate, hate. When they pass me on the highway, you know what I do? I don't wave. With their little tassel handlebars and the studded luggage and the half helmets - God, they drive me crazy.

You know who else I hate? BMW guys. Oh, do I hate those guys. I don't wave at them either. They think they're so great, sitting all upright, with their 180 degree German engines. God, I hate them.

They're almost as bad as those old bastards on their touring motorcycles. You know what I call those bikes? "Two wheeled couches!" Get it? Because they're so big. They drive around like they have got all day. Appreciate the scenery somewhere else, Grandpa.

Oh, and Ducati guys - I don't wave at them either. Why don't they spend a little more money on their bikes? "You can have it in any color as long as it is red." Aren't you cool! Like they even know what a Desmo-whatever engine is, anyway. Try finding the battery, you Italian-wannabe racers! I never, ever wave at those guys.

Suzuki guys aren't much better, which is why I never wave at them, either. God forbid they should ever wear any safety gear. They make me so mad. Sometimes they'll speed by and look over at me and you know what I do? I don't wave. I just keep going.

Please, don't get me started on Honda guys. Fireblades? What are you, twelve years old? I never wave at Honda guys.

I ride a Kawasaki. I'll wave at Kawasaki guys, but, even then, I'll never wave at a guy in full leathers. Never, never, never. Yeah, like you're going to get your knee down on the Eastern Freeway. Nice crotch, by the way. Guys in full leathers will never get a wave from me, and, by the way, neither will the guys in two piece leathers. And I'll tell you who else I'm not waving at - those guys with the helmets with loud paint jobs. Four kilos of paint on a two kilo helmet - like I'm going to wave back at that! I'll also never wave at someone with a mirrored visor. Or helmet stickers. Or racing gloves. Or hiking boots.

To me, motorcycling is like a family, a close knit brotherhood of people who ride Kawasaki's, wear jeans and a leather jacket (not Mars) with regular gloves and a solid color helmet with a clear visor, no stickers, no racing gloves and regular boots (not Rossi's).

And isn't that what really makes the Brotherhood of the Road so special?

Summed up brilliantly.

I not only love riding but I get a huge kick out of watching it. There is nothing better than getting to a track and watching riders punt it around.

You get on your bike and you forget everything that troubles you (not much to trouble me atm) like most have said the twisties :) i'm a big race fan love watching and putting some techniques to use while riding. The thought of selling my bike has unfortunately come up more and more lately, as i considered selling my bike and boat to buy a ducati (1098,rsv4) but as much as i love my bike my fishing boat is my passion along with the bike in second( sorry the wife and two boys do come first overall:)) but as johnny has said my thoughts have moved to a track bike as well and getting of the road.
I walk out to the garage look at my bike then everything changes :dohsmiley:i do love my r1.

I love a weekend away or even just a good day ride with some mates.
I love the feel of roar power on tap, you twist you GO! :ayyy:
I love that Bikes bring people together too, Look at Rats I probably would never had met any of you people if it wasn't for bikes.
I love the track for the freedom it offers, you can push & push till you scare shit out of yourself. Come back in think about & then try it again only faster! :)

Been riding bikes since i was 16 (which is now bout 28 years now) and have loved every mile of it.

Its what makes going to and from work fun. Ive seen many people / types / freinds take up riding (and give it up) so I understand why some fade away.

All road riding (never had the passion for off road) and only in the last couple of years have i ventured on a track, but road riding is still my passion.

Have mentored quite a few L's over the years and have found great satisfaction in seeing them develop into experienced riders (and a few now seen as "major" members of some clubs and bike fraternities.

Just over a year ago whilst laying overnight in St George Hospital with concerns that I'd fractured my back again, then I had a restless night coming to terms that if I'd done any more damage then it would be time to hang up the helmet, but luckily the earlier Xrays were seeing old injuries, so I lived to ride another day.

Thinking of giving up riding is one i dont really want to entertain as I have met most of my best mates on two wheels.

Put the helmet on and start up that motor and I feel the same "rush" as I did when I was 16..... I just now realise that Im not as indestructable as I was then.

Gone from Kawasaki...to Suzuki.. to tricked up Trumpies..and no on Honda,s..so time maybe slowing me down... maybe BMW next then Ducati to retire on LOL !!!

16-11-2008, 09:10 PM
Hi Captain... Not wanting to diverse fron Jonny's thread, but FYI , Picture 2 and 6 are from an article on my Triumph Harris F1 in the UK "Streefighters" magazine... I think you may be refering to the Barkbusters on the handlebars ??? . It was a bit of a joke as Triumph were really against me building the bike (it was the first Special framed "new" Triumph engined bike built and they were just trying to break into the US market and were buying ALL crashed Trumpys in the UK. My bike was on the Streetfighters stand (1987 i think) at the big Birmingham International bike show in Birmingham UK and they were showing off their new Tiger dual purpose machine, so I had mine done up with moto x bars and we were telling everyone it was the secret motox version and Triumph were testing the public reaction.... Funny as Fu$k when all week there were a stream of punters walking up to the Triumph stand and trying to place an order on my one....
