View Full Version : My latest experience with MAW

Hi Guys,

I thought id enlighten the fellow RATS guys on my experience with MAW. I bought a VFR 400 and this bike had some problems to which I thought Id take to MAW after they told me that they "Specialise and race these things"
The bike has been in and out of the shop three times without these guys sorting the initial problems. Ive heard it all from these guys - carby problems to vapour lock - Next thing theyll tell me is that the Flux capacitator is stuffed and now only pumps out 4 gigawatts. What a pain in the arse.. RB are apparently the guys, but just a heads up to the RATS guys, be wary of these guys as my bike has been in the shop for 8 -9 weeks without these guys having any idea. If they told me in week three they needed to get a new motor i would have gladly handed over the shekels but instead they bullshitted about what they are doing. If anyone could give me abit of guidance would be greatly appreciated. Markyygg, Turtle, Blackstorm and Dunno have seen what Ive been through. So be wary:cursing:

George ,

Understand your frustration but there has been a lot of effort gone into the diagnosing the problems for your bike, And from what ive been told you havent been charged to try and fix it.
Parts have been taken from Sammys and co own racebikes to fault find so mate at least you no they have gone the extra mile to try and help you-(i have never heard of shop owner pulling down there own bikes to help out a customer) ,and to avoid having to pay for a new motor to cut costs, again for your benefit,
You bought a cheapie , end of the day you will get what you pay for in bikes as we are all aware but its easy to vent with out paying credit to effort that was also put in on your behalf,
I have never had an issue with MAW , I am sorry you have run into trouble there , but i guess if the first fix had worked you would have been of a different opininon an would have been glad not to have been stung for an engine.
Sincerely Good luck with your bike and hope RB can get it going for you , at least you no whats not wrong with it..

I find it strange there is major problems fixing the VFR400 when they are a bullet proof bike & not that hard to do the things to diagnose problems.
Why would it need a new motor surely a compression test & inspection of oil would rule that out. I will ask a very simple question have they inspected the timing because one tooth out on any cam will cause problems & it is an easy mistake to make. Friends VFR went in & out of dealer with problems & because it was treated as warranty repair they just replaced allot of parts but never fixed the problem. It ended up with Honda Australia because the dealer couldn't fix the problem & they sent the bike to there guru mech who found the problem in 1hr. The dealer had carried out a service before the problem started & when doing valves they had one cam out one tooth on the timing gear.

Not knowing the exact problem make it very hard to diagnose but I would be recommending they inspect the timing but only if the compression test is within spec because no point doing timing if compression bad as motor will need other work.

Yeah Ill hopefully have some word from RB in acouple of weeks. It was my stupidity in retrospect these guys are the experts. I know MAW are decent people but a simple "I cant fix this" would have been nice instead of a whiteknuckled deathgrip on it. Thanks guys for your input.

After reading the above, with mention of the co owner using parts from his own bike to fault test it looks like they have gone over and above what they had to.
They could have charged your to buy all new parts? They were obviously trying there ut most best to find the fault at the least expense for you by the sounds so where in this do u expect them to say we can't fix this?
You fucked up bought a bike that didn't run or has major problems.
You could have been out of pocket alot and can't wait to see what your reply about RB when they take their time and charge for each second, including storage.

I know I don't post very often at all & I'm a lurker, but when someone mentions a subject that might interest me I have a read - obviously this one is too close not to reply.

Thanks for your input Mr 848 & Clarkey, we really apprieciate it. I believe there may have been a few misunderstandings/communication errors influencing your unhappiness George, up until yesterday's call Greg was told it was not urgent (not that this matters now but the bike has still been worked on even up to today to try to find the intermittent & inconsistent problem's it has and was booked for Dyno next Monday). Greg has said he will not charge you George for the many many hours of diagnosis, part swapping from two personal bikes, and hair tearing hours two mechanics, Greg and others have spent on your bike....not because we wanted to whiteknuckle the bike, because we want to help you by fixing the problem without the bill forever going up......oh and can I add that during the time the bike was with us in the shop there was a two week period that we were closed for trade and unable to work on any bikes or sell anything :P (from the stoopid crane nearly falling into the building)

George, I can only apologise again - and hope that you can get the 400 fixed.
Sam

So 9 weeks sounds like an acceptable length of time to you to diagnose and fix a problem? :confused1:

Its marginal when compared to netrider

Never had a problem with MAW. Sam, do you have an R32 GTR? Mines currently misfiring at 4-5K and is 10% down on HP, if I could swap parts with yours I would be grateful as the only thing I can think of is its skipped the timing belt or the cam gear adjuster came loose...

I maybe know a handful of guys who would do this in the auto industry and even then it would be difficult to get them to do this. Amazing the difference between MC and auto industry...

I've got to chuck in my 2 cents here.

I have witnessed first-hand on many occasions, both Sam and Greg going above and beyond when taking care of customers.

On no less that 3 occasions in the last 6 months, Greg has come to collect various bikes in various states of brokeness.

Each time the problems has been taken care of and thier owners given peice of mind (confidence) when they return to the road.

Along with this, I know how much each of them they have charged for the service too, I certainly wouldn't complain.

It's always sad when things take longer than it should, I'm sure your disappointed and I would be frustrated as well. The bigger picture though is that these guys are far better than most inthe industry.

Zakk

Thanks for the input mate - i agree they do their best mate. but unfortunately, compared to what?? Someone else said on the site that, "Your lucky that you dont get charged for agistment and diagnosis. But at the same time I was told alot of shit that didnt ring true brother and I (up till my dealings with the VFR) would happily refer my mates to them. But sometimes the wheels fall off(excuse the pun) and shit happens. It takes a big man or someone with some balls to say "Hey we are flogging a dead horse here mate I cant fix this" False dignosis is merely an oxymoron and if a doctor pulled out someone's left nut for an ear ache I'd hope he wouldnt charge them for it. I wholly agree with you to a point - they are better than most, but that's relative to what? Dont forget i travelled from Drummoyne to Castle Hill just to keep my business with these guys. Yeah they were nice as pie, I had faith in them and kept going back three times. Atleast you have an objective view.

threads like this always create personal attacks even if they don't mean to, it is the reason some forums wont allow vendor verdicts.

there is no problems offering advise, commenting on the good side of things & even commenting on the bad so could we leave the personal directed attacks out. everytime it happens mods have to clean it up & then there is childish attacks on the mods for cleaning up what you guys already know isn't welcome.

in everyday life shit happens, things get missed, wires get crossed, people aren't machines & make mistakes. it's how the mistakes can be rectified is the main objective.

Underground you really have taken on board the concept a picture speaks a 1000 words.

Yes and no, once attacks start, it becomes excepted. One of the best things about this website is has been its friendliness, an excellent example of this can be seen in the introduction forum. Every single person who has posted an introduction in there has received a warm welcome, as a result, when the newcomer posts that welcoming experience is continued, because that's how we all have been treated, allow the personally attacks and it follows suit what will happen.

Good luck with the bike RTMB

Although I have had one issue where they changed a rear tyre and put the chain adjuster blocks in the wrong way and put the axle in the wrong way also..needless to say I had a bloody overly tight and mal-adjusted chain until I realised and fixed what had happened the following day..

I think that things need to be kept in perspective; I have never been there (in fact, I had no idea who MAW were until now) but it's a known fact that a disgruntled customer will tell everyone ... whereas the happy customers will tell only a few.

Not only, but the reason many websites don't allow this is that the negative feedback is all for there to see .... forever. That's not fair on a business either, they might have addressed the issue, sacked the employee, maybe it was not even a fair complaint to begin with; yet the business will forever be penalised because of what ONE person wrote.

That's a really good point, the post can outlast the problem.

it seemed like they went to a lot of trouble trying to troubleshoot it for you and it was truly awesome of them not to charge you for it!

I'm having mechanic issues at the moment and had only heard good about MAW until now. :confused1:
My mechanic (who I have spoken of but never named or hopefully given away) has stuffed me around with suspension parts getting rechromed for about 7 weeks now.....
2 or 3 weeks ago they sent my actual forks off (they did try and get me to take a different setup after telling me it would be the same, simple mistake but it changed the geometry-chopper style!):dohsmiley:

If they come good with the cost side I will still be happy, because they were originally trying to save me time and shipping charges......long story I'm not too pissed at them yet...but the owner it a bit of a wally not knowing that the 2 parts weren't the same!:confused1: :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Fair go guys, Rupecht has voiced his opinion, and has been apollogised to by the owners and co workers .
Im not taking sides in this, and joked once or twice in this thread, but its not going away :lmao: .

Yes Ive been to Maw on a few occasions, both when knowing they where Rats members, and before knowing, although have never had any mechanical work, I have always been treated great, they went over and above to see I was looked after proper, and this meant they sold me nothing, just great advice that saw me save huge dollars. Unlike other stores where they wouldnt give a fuck and just want to sell their shit ( too bad I dont buy that :p ), so yes, Maw, its owners workers are great. Will have no hesitation in going back, ever !

At the same time, there is no need to board the bandwagon and jump down Ruperts throat, Im sure you would be happy paying for a trackday, and not even getting half a session in, TWICE, then wait 7 weeks for a service he never got. Funny, but I bet it would be a different story if you were in Ruperts shoes, I'd bet my left testicle that you wouldnt wait 7 weeks to post up the story ( as he has), let alone wait till you get bike back.

This post is in no disrespect to either Maw, or Rupert ( who by the way is an ex cop, so would know the legal side better than a lot of you guys playing the legal card here :lmao: ). Both have the right to voice their opinion, as they both have.

Been in Georges shoes many a time Johnny,

Arata system -16mths delivery
Galfer Disks-Arrived 3 weeks after the td they were purchased for but were due two weeks prior
New Engine -8 weeks n counting
Race glass-dont ask

Waiting is never fun .....almost seems mandatory in this industry where Australian cyclists dont seem to rate too highly but I appreciate Georges position totally

Me and the Storm ate at the Charcoal chicken joint across the rd brother after picking the VFR from the motorcycle shop in question and Storm had nothing but nice words about you. I got a housewarming party coming up guys and want try and get you guys over ASAP.
