Word has it from PI today that the VIC Police did a tour of the pits at the Trackday down there specifically to bust those with stolen bikes. They found 4.
Apparently they announced it at the briefing what there intentions were, kept a couple of coppers on the gate and caught 2 trying to sneak out.
Well done VIC Police. Stop them from riding at the track and there will be less incentive to steal a bike.
we would hope they were some innocent purchasers of said bikes... but then to explain an attempted early departure... not likely

What took them so long to figure that out I wonder ?, but
Its one of the first places I would be looking if my bike goes missing..

Outstanding effort - about time they went after some real criminals in Victoria instead of revenue raising with their unreasonably tight tolerances on speeding.
It's almost worth writing to the NSW police minister and asking for the same thing here - it will remove one of the motives for the thieving scum to steal our rides.

Totally agree with the above sentiments... It's not to often the boys in blue get a well deserved "job well done"

Ive always wondered how many bikes are stolen at track days. I know it would slow the process down a whole lot but maybe VIN no. need to be checked during scruitineering or police invited to Eastern Creek one day. Im sure they would catch heaps, Then these people would be known and banned from track days.
Im sure alot of people who ride stolen bikes didnt actually steal them, but I bet they bought them being fully aware that it had been.
Great to see the police making an effort against stolen bikes.

These idiots deserve everything that comes their way.Bike thieves are lowest form of scum in my eyes .......well done to the Victorian police department, i think that a few of their northern colleagues could learn a thing or two.

I think this is a good idea, (it seems likely that stolen bikes would end up at the track) but before hanging the riders you need to remember that innocent people can buy stolen bikes too.
A mate of mine had his bike stolen, and the cops recovered it 12 months later and caught the thief. The deadshit thief had sold it to some poor kid who ended up losing his cash, despite a REVS check coming up clean because we don't have a proper system here in the ACT. My mate felt so sorry for the kid that he sold the bike back to him at a discount price.

Back from our PI trip - they found 3 bikes on the Monday and 2 bikes on the Tuesday.
One guy tried to get out on the monday after the riders briefing informed us that the police were going to be walking around that day but the police met him at the gates.
Definatley would like to know which officer plod we need to speak to get this becoming a regular fixture in Sydney.

Kat00

More than likely they were being used as trackbikes because the guy who told me said they were caught at the gate trying to get out with the bikes on trailers.

So simple and it took them this long
Its just a shame that nobody was there capturing it all on film...that stuff would be manna from heaven for anybody thats had a bike lifted...in my case, 3 of 'em!!!

I gotta say, when I got my bike & watched them put the DataDot stuff all over it.. its in places in the frame, motor etc you wouldnt think to look for.
I know it doesnt stop it being flogged.. I have quicktrak in my car, does anyone here have it in their bike?

As I was also at the 2 PI days the strange thing was the police doing the inspections were polite & curious. They informed you individually what they were doing before they touched your bike.
The funny thing was they attended unprepared as they had to borrow a 3 bike trailer on the first day to transport the stolen bikes they found.

they were at the ecrrs on the weekend as well. the cops were very polite and didnt want to get in the way.
but it was very funny when they didnt know where to find the engine numbers on some models.

What are they doing with the track bikes that dont have any build plate or markings on them?
I ask this as when you go along to a car track day, there is always a heap of cars towed in by the owners that dont have any numbers at all.

If they havent got engine numbers I'd say they would have some explaining to do.
If I bought a bike without a number on the frame I'd want to see a receipt for the frame and I'd want to take that away from the seller. If you buy a frame from the manufacture of the bike they don't come with a number on them but in all cases your going to need an engine number.

Are people generally turning up to a track day with a newish (new as in less than 8-10 years old) bike?
Years ago when I was a young hoon, one of my R100 coupes (13b bridgey) was defected for the usual shit.
When it was being inspected, they acid tested the build plate to see if it was dodgy.

Just so everyone one knows - the boys in blue were at PI this weekend just gone..
Checking the ECRR bikes on Friday and then backed up for the 2 track days on the Mon, Tues..
They managed to get 1 bike on Friday and 2-3 on Mon, and another 2 on Tuesday..
One guy on tuesday reckons he bought his legit and had put all sorts of yummy stuff on it.. Ohlins, fibreglass, you name it.. and it got taken off of him after a rather long discussion with the coppers..
turns out he was the 3rd set of hands to get a hold of the bike...
is there a system where the gen. public can check a bikes details to see if it's stolen or not before you buy???

ooooooooooh Interesting...and what a great idea :)
Hope to see them at more ride days, and even race meets. I do have sympathy for genuine people caught out though, got to be worth doing your checks before buying even a track bike.
Last time I saw coppers at a track day they were testing their speed cameras on us as we came down the straight :) Not checking numbers on frames or engines

Well if the bike does not have an engine number / vin number (removed for what ever dodgy reason) what can they do? they can't prove it is stolen? and being not on the road, it doesn't have to have one?
Either way, good one on the coppers, but do feel bad for those people who did buy the bike thinking it was legal.

try telling that to the coppers as they wheel your bike away.
it doesnt help.

IT'd be awkward if you bought the bike stolen (your fault), then bolted on a good heap of goodies - or even mates rims with slicks etc... then they take it away with all your purchased parts... hopefully thered be an appeals process to let you proven those parts were purchased.
Guess it boils down to something REALLY simple.. dont buy a stolen bike! :D

What do they do with the bikes if the original owner's insurance company has paid them when they had it stolen?
Wattie
20-11-2008, 04:31 PM
not sure mate, i guess it go to government auctions. more revenue for the coppers to buy donuts with. :)

The insurance company will auction them. Some give the original owner the option to buy it back first.

I asked the copper that exact question - the insurance company keeps the bike
