View Full Version : Sports bikes Putty fuel problem

Stolen from another forum.
Apparently the halfway house on the putty road has decided they can no longer afford to sell fuel, after BP decided to charge 12c a litre cartage to get out there. There's at least 40'000litres in a truck...
Dunno how big the tanks under halfway house are though...
And it seems the small servo at colo river will never sell fuel again after the powers that be have decreed that their tanks, which they are trying to repair, are too close to the river.
Looks like if you own a sports bike & want to use the throttle doing the Putty your going to be pushing some of the way :(

Then how far is it from the edge of Winsor to the first fuel stop at the other end? just sort of 200k's?

Its 177K`s I think from Windsor to Singleton.
Its closer to go to the Mobil at Broke.
The days of a run to the 1/2 house and back are over......for most.

half way house are going to lose a lot of business if they go this way!
Captain
18-02-2008, 07:38 PM
That half way house should have gone out of business a long time ago, I can't believe the crap they sell.
Pity about the fuel situation though. I've never had a problem, can do 300Ks on a full tank easily, but some of these 15L bikes will, I guess.
Just buy the coffee they sell there and put this crap in your tank.
It certainly tastes like unleaded.
I'll have 40 flat whites.........thank you very much :)

Nah, don`t think so....Premium was scarce everywhere on the weekend..... We had to go looking for it on Saturday arvo here in Sydney.
David, a member here is a tanker driver and he told us it was scarce.

Seems as though those out for a morning ride to halfway and back will have to stop where the long straights are, pull out the thermos for a cuppa and turn around and go back.
Me, I'm lucky ... I've gotten 245kms out of a tank with the light still flashing.

Well, I have a ute that could hold quite a few gerry cans, I am willing to be a support vehicle every now and then, drive up to the halfway to refuel people there. That way you can still do a halfway run and back!

I cant understand what the hoohah is all about, wouldnt trust halfway houses fuel in the gix for starters, therefor never have filled there.
As for the bitching about food and coffee, next time, check to see gun pointed at your head forcing you to buy it, is loaded :lmao:
Be thankfull you have a place to suck down some nicotine and grab a cold drink mid ride, not to mention hear from other riders of conditions/popo ahead ;)

Yes anything is better than nothing, but if it's crap then it's crap. And IT IS CRAP.
Hopefully someone else will take it over at some point, it's not hard to learn how to make a decent cup of coffee, or stock food that you can actually consume.

a tad harsh!!!
Mind you - after the Canberra fires we lost out pub that served crappy food, shitful coffee but at least it was somewhere warm to hang in winter and they had loo's...........
Now, all the soft bike riders down here don't even ride that road anymore.......
which is kinda good cause it's free'd it up alot and we dobn't get the harley riders coming down giving us shit about riding 'jap pocket rockets' - who then go and down a 6 pack and jump on their bikes!
I'mk with the rest of you guys - COMPLAIN!!

So to get this correct in my head if you go along putty rd via windsor the last petrol is at Colo Heights, then next petrol is Broke (121 K's) or Singleton (135 K's)
From memory it is about 10ks past the halfway house to the twisties, but what i cannot remember is how far along the halfway house is.
In the past a putty ride on the 10 used a fair bit of left wrist <-- HAHAHA but could make it to Broke, and the 10 always averaged of 170-180k's out of a tank before fuel light came on.
On the duck it is around 150k's out of a tank, but either way it doesnt look like its the end of the putty run just becuase the halfway house has closed up shop on its shitty petrol - just means a change in either direction (going via wollombi to broke, then broke to the twisties and back, then home via wollombi) or places where you fill up - Colo heights and either broke or singleton.

To me the higher your post count the more your at home which means the following:
1. you don't ride your bike enough
2. you have no friends

Of course it doesn`t mean the end for the Putty but it will have an effect on some riders. By having to go to Broke or Singleton to get fuel to get home it will add an hour to the ride.
The 1/2 way house has always been a convenient place to ride to for a quick squirt and back again. No longer for those with short range tanks because they will be compelled to ride on. So potentially, it is a big deal for some.

Welp, I guess im not doing the putty anymore. the best i can get out of a tank is 180ish km on the same constant throttle on a straight highway with hardly any red lights/stopping.
I didn't like the putty anyway.

Update on Fuel at/and Halfway house..
Taken from elsewhere..so no idea of accurracy, but seems legit enough..
From the New Owner of the Half way house on the Putty Road
He has taken over from the previous owner and will continue to run the
service station, food and fuel as before
With the intention of improving facilities, safety etc and would like to
hear from riders regarding catering for groups
Etc.
If you phone and give him an estimate of numbers he is happy to cater lunch,
morning teas etc for groups, they
Have the usual meals available at other times as before, tea and coffee,
cold drinks etc
John is also looking to improve the BBQ area so that this may be used by
clubs etc.
At the moment he has unleaded but is getting more fuel in as the previous
owner had to let the tanks run out,
However the pumps have been re-primed and are working.
