Can someone please give me the good oil on tyre repair? I have been losing pressure from the rear tyre, today I topped it up and after a few hours it was down to 20psi again. I pumped it up and leak tested it, and here I found the leak:

It seems to be a puncture of some type, I can't see anything inside the hole - it's maybe 5mm only.

As my tyres are near new, I'm wondering if this can be repaired. It would be straightforward on a car tyre, maybe $ 40 and you're done. Is this the same with bike tyres? Is there a set price for these type of repairs? 'Cos I'm thinking if a mechanic needs to remove the wheel and the tyre etc etc etc then at $ 100 per hour it might be cheaper to buy a new tyre.
Also I'm in Sydney (inner west). Any recommendations where I could get this done? I can pump it up and ride there ...
Thanks, appreciate any advice.

a plug should fix it not sure what the cost is .
Alex.

Puncture repair kit will fix it. A little while ago I caught up with another friend who got a puncture just like that and we fixed it in about 15 minutes. He ended up doing a few thousand k's on the repaired tyre.
I've got a kit that I carry on the bike, we can meet during the week and fix it if you like?

It can be done without having to go to a tyre workshop? - you know, where they have uni degrees in tyre technology .....
Seriously though, is it a safe repair if done from the OUTSIDE of the tyre? Can't the plug get pushed out under pressure?
If it's all good then yes, thanks for your offer to help, I really appreciate it. :ayyy:

Safe only really as a temp measure, don't waste time with tyres.. ditch it or get it fixed professionally. Alex I know your mate would swear by it so you'd learn from that, but when you have available to you mushroom plugs at your local bike service place then theres no use doing a temporary repair.

Mushroon plug it = $50
Remove wheel, remove tyre, internally reamed buffed and glued.
If done right, 100% fixed for the life time of the tyre.
Best using the services of an experience motorcyle workshop.

i agree with zee i had a brand new tyre a 002 frist day out at O/P a hole in it
had it plug from inside no problen did 2 more track days and still in there
wayne
going by the pic there doesnt seem to much left in her anyway, it looks like there be 2mm until the indicators. But for the record, i would just plug it. If you are planning on doing a track day on that tyre ditch it, temps to hot and might let go

Bah, plug from the outside will see out that tyre and no problem at all...No need to throw away money, get yourself a puncture repair kit, use it, and carry it around with you.
Have had alot more than one string type plug in mine at a time, and many different tyres, never once had an issue.

I'm with Gixar on this. Unless you regularly do 300kph on the bike an external plug (string type, not the other dodgy crap thats out their) will outlast the tyre. I've had them in individual tyres for over 14,000km and never had a problem.

I would plug it from the outside but most of my mates would say plug it from the inside...

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice. The problem is that I now have conflicting advice, which is great for a forum discussion but doesn't really give me the confidence I need. Or rather it creates a doubt, so:
Whilst I also believe that a repair from the OUTSIDE using a plug will probably outlast the tyre, I don't want to be riding with a doubt in the back of my mind. So it's between a repair from the INSIDE (which I am fairly comfortable with) or replace the tyre .... :confused1:
Thanks anyway Alex. If nothing else I now know that you can buy repair kits, and will buy one to keep for emergency.
Zee: Where can I get this 'mushroom plug' job done in Sydney? I know bike shops change tyres, but is this done by the salemen or do any have experienced tyre chnagers/repairers?

from reading your posts Captain, i think you're wanting to buy "piece-of-mind" rather than a cheap fix. If i was in your situation, i would go professional (even though i mite cost abit more). The extra dollars you spend isn't just for the tyre...

You said your comfortable with an internal plug, go with that!
I have seen people do a few track days on musroom plugs.
Most places who do tyres will do the plugs, from memory its about $50 which would mainly be labour.
If you ditch the tyre, give it to me and I will plug it and do a TD on it, if I bin because of the rear end we will all know for the future...

Plug it. I have had two tyres with repairs. One was using the sealant from a can (which did two track days plus a few thousand kays) the other is Waynes old bike which just did another track day. Holding tyre pressure no problems.
