Just finished reading an article in Rapid about Jeff & Heather Ware touring in Germany on a B-King and Jeff doing some laps at the Nurburgring. Don't know about you guys but I love to do this sort of stuff.

My dream holiday would be to tour Europe on a bike and catch some GP & SBK rounds along the way. It our plan that when the kids grow up to do exactly this.

Was wondering who has done any serious touring and where? You would want a bike that is suitable for touring as well as scratching around the hills.

Middle of last year I did England , Scottland, Whales, for 10 days, on a GSXR600 (96)..
Have done 10 days around australia, 2 separate times on the Falco, and once on a GSXR750 (94).

Will do Europe one day, for good 2-3 months. When the time is right.

Mick,

Awesome....Did you hire/buy a bike in the UK or did you ship your bike over. I believe that you need to live there to get insurance on a bike otherwise you have to hire a bike.

I looked into it Bart but apparently its not good form on your honeymoon.
My plan was to hire a bike in Italy & head north following the Meditear??????
I cant bloody spell it, but the piece of water between Italy & Spain.
If you time it right you can catch the GP in SanMarino. Rimini is a must & is 20 min from Imola & Misano.
I figured following the coast from Rimini & visit Monaco, Nice & then head to Barcelona & sth to Valencia & Seville.

Thats what I looked into for starters.

I looked into hiring a bike but will have to find the links to the site & looked at. They have BMWs & VRF800s for hire.

Be warned though mate, they drive like nutters.

Will find the info I collected & get back to you Bart.

Yeah was a good idea Mrs Mozz, we just had too much shit to carry & were a bit sketchy on road rules & the safety aspect. We did hire a scooter in Sorrento & did the Amalfi coast which was amazing but the locals use it as a race track & they are MAD!!!!!

Here is the mob in Spain

Dunno,

How did a scooter go with 2 up on it. Did you have gear or did you hire this also.

do they have road rules over there.

Who ever has the biggest vehicle has right of way. Trucks & buses dont have to obey stop signs if its only a bike in the intersection because if the rider knows whats good for em they will be out of the way by the time the bus goes rolling through.

Was a good little scoot. Was a 125 4 stroke & went ok with the 2 of us. But it wasnt the longest of rides & I would want a bike if I was doin more Ks. Hired all the gear ok.

Well, I have never had the chance to go to a country solely for the purposes of touring on a bike, per se.... But have instead been living there or nearby to where I will go, and in working there have found, bought, and then built/prepared the bike for the trip - usually equates to simply modifying the current hack to go for a little or large jaunt...

So, I tend to choose completely unsuitable machines - which incidentally end up being utterly suited to the best parts of the trips!! :lmao: (what is the twisty bits)

Been around Oz East section on RZ250 and CX500; GSX1100 and GS1000 - RZ was the best fun - Malaysia on a 110cc tuned Honda stroker - Taiwan on a RZ150 I built myself (tuned motor and sussies)... Europe last time around was 2-up on a CBR600 with extra ride-height to offset the pillion (me missus), and stiffer springs and damping at both ends for the twisties fun as we were 2-up; and we took a stuff bag which we bungied to the stock grab-rail every morning... (tent, sleeping bag and knickers n socks - datz all)

Some go with luggage, I never have - comfort and discomfort is something one can get used to anyways.... 22+ countries on bikes; though like bikes I have owned, I stopped counting at some point in the past... and it is for me best to be very under-planned and spontaneous in order to make for the best trip ( I hate rules! )...

Oh, and no, still not been to the Ring... mebbe next time.... :ninja:

I purchased the GSXR over in the UK, got it for bargin for 1100 pound, then sold it for 1700.... Rode around with no insurance. There are places where you can get insurance for a short period of time for this kinda of purpose. which i did get organised, but some reason just didn't go through with it. eh, all worked out in the end.

Tassie is damn nice as well, went over in November, and still was freaken cold then!

Love your work Bart. One of the reasons Mrs Bones is learning to ride is because I always wanted to ride around AUS. In a couple of years we are gonna do it on a bike each. Camping style really get to know the land. We live in the greatest country in the world so why go over seas thats my question. We are gonna take 2 or 3 months and take a good look around AUS after that we might check out the rest of the world.

Greg,

You have the best bike for it. Just finished reading an article about the V-Strom in an old edition of road rider and they gave it the 2 thumbs up :ayyy:

mmm touring on a bike its the only way to really experience the journey, you are next to nature there is nothing between you and the outside world, unlike in a car.

Yup it's gonna be fantastic! can't wait!, we were originally going to do it for our honeymoon but that's less than 12 months away and we will want to take bout 3 months of work so it's been pushed back another year. I agree sounds like the perfect getaway!
To rip off a quote from BMW - 'There's no point in a destination if you don't enjoy the journey.':ayyy:
