Message from NSW Ambulance Service

We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than if we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this "ICE" (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.

The concept of "ICE" is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name "ICE" ( In Case Of Emergency).

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as "ICE".

ICE on my phone how misleading......I thought we were putting a new twist on my latest drug addiction.

In all seriousness though, pretty good idea, what ambo is going to know that the number they picked out of the phone is the right person to call, how bad would it be if you were a friend being the first to find out someone had been in a bad stack, instead of the wife/hubby/mum/dad being called first.

Spose I should make the entry in my phone, or i could just change my wife's name in their to ICE maiden, same thing :lmao:

It sounded sus as the keywords "Cell phone" and "Paramedics" are usually USA related, so I checked it out and it seems the NSW Ambo's have officially denied this is a campaign of theirs, heres their story on it. http://www.ambulance.nsw.gov.au/community_info/

Heres a selected portion of the sites info. I will still be putting my wife as the "ICE" anyway, as they said, the idea has merit for single vehicle accidents.

Enquiries regarding ICE

The Ambulance Service has not launched any campaign supporting ICE (In Case of Emergency). Ambulance supports any method of contacting family in a critical medical emergency. Methods that can be used include information in diaries, wallets, drivers’ licences, and mobile phones. The concept of ICE has merit and would be another source of information to assist with identification.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE: in cases involving more than one patient or a where a mobile phone has been borrowed from someone else, it may be difficult to confidently match personal belongings to any one individual. This may in turn lead to unnecessary distress. The Ambulance Service also advises that as with all stored personal information, individuals need to be mindful of confidentiality issues.

We asked all riders that went down to the Moto GP to put an ICE contact on their mobile Ph & also made a list that several people carried with all riders details ( proper name, log on name, Mob Number, Ice name & number, and if anybody wanted to we asked for any allergies). As there was 23 riders, some of whom I had never met, thought it was better to be safe than sorry.

Yep i have it in my phone for a couple of years now.
I'm also looking at getting a couple of stickers made up to put on my helmet.
1 that has emergency contact details and 1 that says to leave my helmet on.
The last thing i want is some who thinks they are helping to try and remove my helmet.
