Hi guys,
I got somewhat interested in measuring lap times using a GPS receiver.
To cut it short after quite a bit of googling around I've decided to test the combination
- Harry's Lap Timer Professional 6.0 for Palm (I got a Palm phone) http://www.schlangmann.mynetcologne.de/HarrysLapTimer/index.html
- Bluetooth 5Hz GPS receiver
http://www.semsons.com/i737blgps5hz.html
COST? 130 AU$ for the lot (already having the phone)
Got the GPS receiver today, it's very small, smaller than I expected, better, as I can easily put it anywhere on the bike.
After charging the Lithium battery for a couple of hours, turned it on and paired with my Palm....... perfect, pairing was smooth, as this was an area of concern; you never know with these bluetooth devices.....
In the meanwhile I had the Harry's software installed on my Palm, also this went smooth, no hussles.
The software looks pretty simple or pretty basic depends on the way you look at it.
The screen starts showing you
CURRENT LAP 00.00.00
BEST LAP 00:00.00
There is an "analyse" button but when pressed says "No Data to be Analysed", really?? of course! I need to put data in..... how do I put data in? I have to "move" and take times.....
The balcony is not an option, and also starting jogging while raining didn't sound as a good thing to do.
Excited as usual with the new toy, said goodbye to everyone and headed to my car (it was bucketing down).
The test "circuit" is not too far away from where I live (decided just to drive around Campbell Park in Chiswick).
Understanding how the software works is pretty simple. Did the first lap (once found how to start tracking ....... ), then stopped, and the "circuit" shows up drawn on the screen :ayyy: :) :ayyy: ; I set the main "trigger" (finish line) where I was, and start lapping again and again, and each time I pass on the "finish line" .... BEEEEEEEEEEEP....... three four laps and then I stop
best lap in 1:25:15... top speed x2.3Km/h (cops around?)
.
You can click on each lap time and see the main data of that lap, then click analyse and the drawing of the specific lap comes up very similar to the ones showed in the snapshots on the link above, with all the data max/min speed for each section etc.
You can set up intermediates "triggers" manually on the "circuit" map, but these didn't work backwards on the laps already done, but only on the laps from that point on. Ok, I can live with that.
The software is pretty basic, you can't compare laps side by side, you can't see the exact trajectories but basically it gives you
- time for each lap + intermediates
- point by point speed/distance/time for each lap
Tracks can be saved and re-used, keeping all the times in memory spearately, by day/session/vehicle.
Precision claimed by the developer is plus/minus 6 hundredths of a second. Would be interesting to have a comparison during a session on track using beacon based laptimers.
It looks as it has comprehensive export capabilities, but I've no idea what that means.
Overall it suits perfectly with what I was looking for, even if it doesn't get even close to the sofistication level of the softwares of the more expensive units.
NIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIICE :)

You should try this
http://www.gpslaptiming.com/
I'm not sure if it supports WM, but it's specific for Mobile Phones.
I think it only supports 1Hz refresh rates (and I'd think your receiver is a 1Hz refresh rate GPS receiver).
I was thinking to try it on my wife's Motorola.

ive got GPRS on my phone is that the same as GPS.
YES IT IS (sorry jasonbw)
Your phone is a 6110 Navigator & unlike a normal dedicated GPS that can only use sats to lock, your phone has the added feature to speed things up using the mobile network for a lock (GPRS just means you have added network feature, but still have normal GPS)
So your built in GPS in your phone is better than a normal GPS because it uses 2 forms of lock, the sats as normal & the mobile network (mobile network feature can also be turned off so only uses sats).
Funny how this ended up the pda option with added GPS receiver, I mentioned in last thread about phone/pda option & was shoot down due to wanting dedicated fast GPS timer
The 6110 will shit on any pda/gps combo for speed & it's free if your upgrading your phone or starting a new plan (I had 6months left on my plan & was allowed to upgrade early so my GPS track timer cost me 0)
jasonbw

YES IT IS (sorry jasonbw)
no need for sorry, if you know his phone model then you have the scoop, but you'll be confusing people with your line above, having GPRS doesnt mean you have GPS on the phone.
EDIT: GPRS is General Packet Radio Service, its doesnt relate at all to GPS capabilities.
Pokey
13-11-2007, 04:21 PM
Did a track day at EC yesterday and a bloke there had a pda gps receiver set up, seemed to work ok for the timing and he ended up with a map of the track showing point speeds at various points around the track, so it would give an even better idea how your doing than just a lap timer

Doesn't GPRS stand for "GLOBAL POSITIONING RACING SYSTEM" and they are dedicated to Lap Timers ???? Just what i heard ???
How accurate are they?
To the second? 1/4 second?
i mean... how accurate is the GPS anyay? To the metre? 10m?
How many times does it update per second?

RaceChrono is a GPS based lap timing software for Nokia S60 smart phones
I have just bought the above GPS receiver which is 5HZ I have the Nokia 6110 Navigator but the built in GPS is a little slow for lap timing. Any smart phone will do if you buy the receiver & add the free racechrono software which has tracks for all of AUS to download.
This system works a treat & the best part is the bluetooth receiver is so small you don't have any problems at the track as I have noticed lately they have been removing timing devices unless attached to bike permanently & transponder based timers need the transponder which they also hunt for these days (mainly only EC). You have your phone in your pocket & receiver on your bike with tape covering it & your set.

I have the same phone (the navigator) but use a different transponder. I tested yesterday against the Circuit Breakers lap timers and it was off by only 0.01, sometimes not even that!!!!
This is the one that I and a few friends use (also 5Hz refresh rate, anything bellow that I wouldn't recommend):

You'll have to excuse my ignorance here, i'm by no means a tech freak.
So how do i know which phones are 'smart phones'.
I am about to get a new phone on contract and i would hate to get one that doesn't work for this lap timing purpose.
i can just imagine the pimply teenager at the phone shop just staring at me with no idea of what i need.
All i know is that my current phone is a nokia 6233, which has bluetooth and a camera, other than that i'm a mushroom (kept in the dark and feed shit).he he

Mate, the best way to find out is to visit: http://www.racechrono.com/manual/?page_id=19&lang=en
I know that's almost too blunt but there are a lot of things you'll need to learn there. Like the fact that'll have to update your program almost every month as it will expire and not work anymore (don't worry, it's free! For now...). Just make sure to get a good Nokia phone (as in not the basic ones) and you should be fine.
If you're really in doubt just go here: http://www.racechrono.com/download/?lang=en
and have a look at phones they have listed there as they all work fine!:ayyy:
My only piece of advice is DO NOT USE the internal GPS. Getting a phone with a in-built GPS to use on the track is a waste in my opinion. I tried that and it's not good at all.:cursing:

I'm, also using RaceChrono > it's heaps better than some of the others I've seen and IT'S FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All tracks are already pre mapped (gpslaptiming.com.au does not allow this, you have to map the track each time and it's a pain as you really need to doa lap the outside line and a lap on the inside line to set the split points)
RaceChrono, for a free app, is bloody terrific.............the above post is correct of course, a mobile with internal GPS is no good (I have Nokia N95 with Internal GPS and it KINDA worked but really badly > in fact it didn't even record a full lap > as soon as we plugged in a NAVMAN II receiver (1Mhz) all worked really really well......I've now bought a 5Mhz job to make it even more accurate..........

You can also export all the data to another programs (DANAS, Performance Box, etc) that help you to analyze it better on the computer and to me that's where the biggest advantage is! You can clearly see on every lap where your breaking/accelerating points are, your speed at every point of track, etc! Very valuable info!!:ayyy:

It's the best thing to do after a TD! Some friends and I send each other our data so we can compare (those programs I mentioned allow to do that) and see who's faster where and why. Bloody awesome, and almost as addictive as the TD itself! :lmao:
I just installed the race chrono program and my gps just came in the mail (3weeks later) did a few laps around the streets and made a little track, exported it to goggle earth, haha, to much fun and im not even sure what im doing..!
Mr.Ed can i PLEASE get a few links to have a play too. while Im still in the playing around mood.
Get to try it out this weekend too. so its all just in time.

NO need to update every month, the certificate they use I think it's valid for 6 months, so it needs to be updated every now in a while, the latest version will stop working end of this month, but there will be another one which will work until new year.
The software itself gets updated quiet regularly and the latest version can use bluetooth ODBII reader to get information about your RPM, speed, throttle position and lots more. Now that is fun, full telemetry from around the track.

OK, reason I said every month is this:
I didn't know about it either and had used it in May, but then didn't ride on June and July. On the 3rd of August I tried to use it at OP and it was expired and being at the track already I was screwed...:hatter:
So I removed the old one and got a new version at their website and this new version says it will expire on the 31st of August. So I'm guessing it only lasts for about a month before they update it again. It's pretty simple really and the software itself is so light it takes next to zero minutes do download it. Also you don't lose your sessions/data/tracks, just the program gets removed.

depends - take a laptop to the track (good to use with P.Commander anyhow) > most tracks have the net available wirelessly > good for checking BOM for weather and also, DOWNLOADING the current version of RaceChrono.....so you could update at the track if you wanted to...

Check the models on the RaceChrono Website > they recommend 2 models of receivers - A Qstar 5Mhz is the one I went with due to the better refresh rate over the 1Mhz jobs........which all cost around the $100 mark.

QStar Extreme - 5MHz = $100-$110 and is one of the products recommended by RaceChrono....
Any will work - the 1Mhz jobs only update once every second - 5Mhz is 5 times a second - a 10Mhz is available (for a cost) but not really worth it..........

OK, I have the phone, and I finally figured out how to download the program and the tracks (not that hard ..... eventually).
Now I need to buy the receiver, can someone confirm that this one works before I place the order? Not sure which RAT suggested this one, maybe zRoYz, maybe not?Any difference? Thanks.
EDIT: the semson one says 'sold out' so maybe that's not an option ...
Both receivers are based on the same MTK chipset. The chipset is the brain of the receiver, therefore the two items you mention are very very similar (differences can then be on other elements such as battery capacity, case, lights and whatever...)
I'd go for the aussie one, so that if something goes wrong you have more chances to get it fixed.
Ciao.

my Global top reciever arrived the other day. I have downloaded racechrono, Easstern Creek and Oran park tracks so far.
The Oran Park south circuit is only the short track isn't it?
To test my set up I have made a track with traps (splits) out of my trip home from work in my car.
It seeems to work well as a special type stage not a complete circuit, i can't wait to try it at a ride day.
how close does your phone have to be to your reciever?
Captain
18-09-2008, 05:17 PM
Up to 10m according to my receiver.

:confused1:so where can you stick the reciever on the bike so that the scruiteneer's cant' find it and yet can still get a good lock on satellites?
my reciever has bright blue flashing lights while it is working so it will have to be out of the way a bit i guess.

If you are going to use one, fit it on top of your helmet. If it's not there, then the officials can rest assured no timing equipment is being used.

Posting that on an internet forum might not help the cause very much...:n: You know how they never check the top of the helmets!

OK, me again. Damn it I think I finally got this gizmo working .... well, it seems to work most of the time. A few times it gave me lots of lap times of of 1.2, 1.3 seconds etc, and once it told me that I have not completed any laps despite me going round and round plenty of times (around the local park). I'm sure it's me, I'm doing something wrong but at least it works.:ayyy:
Got abused by heaps of old people, even though I wasn't speeding (honestly). "you've been around here five times already" WTF? are they counting me?
:spank:
I have said it before; old people are just like skinkys http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31ZZRP8GVNL._SL75_SS50_.jpg ....
totally useless, but you can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.

I had some similar happen to me when I bought my bike. This woman came over and said: "Oi, are patrolling this area or just my sleep?" It was 3:15pm and she was on her late 30s. :confused1:
The lap thing. Make sure to set the start/finish line on both Racechrono and DANAS (when analyzing the data there). If that doesn't work, then... erm... I don't know.

Went to the track today, and dammit IT WORKS!!!! wow.
Now, I have downloaded Performance Box (because I couldn't find DANAS), and I need to lead the racechrono session data. However, PB is only looking for .vbo and .dbn files, whereas racechrono files in my phones are BIN files (???). What do I do?
Thanks.

I haven't done this for a while but i think you need to export the lap, there should be an option that looks something like that file type. If you go to the Racechrono website i think there's a bit more information on exporting files to use with performance box :ayyy:

There was a guy at EC (nice bloke, a few of us rode with him at RRPA - damn I can't remember his name) who bought the racechrono software + receiver for over $ 200 at the bike show :confused1:
It looked exactly the same as the one I'm using (which I downloaded for free). Anyone know whether there's another version?
Mr.Ed
25-11-2008, 03:11 PM
I've seen the ad for that on aus-superbikes but honestly I don't think I need any more than what the set up I have at the moment provides. Mobile + GPS transponder + Racechrono is all I ever wanted!!!:ayyy:
For now, that is...:n:

There's not, seems like someone is ripping off the work of Antti Lammi the programmer who I think is from Finland and trying to profit for no work at all. You can make donations on his website, but there's no other version, since he's the only one who has access to the source code.
If I was Antti, I would sue the hell out of the guy for trying to profit from my work without licensing it. But then I didn't read the license under which the software is distributed and maybe I should have. All I know is that the software isn't opensource.

well maybe he has the license to sell if it is really racechrono, and pay royalties for that. I wouldn't be stupid to sell software without the permission of the owner, that's too stupid to be true.
Well if you guys have questions for the programmer about the other version floating around you can ask him on this page http://racechrono.com/about/?lang=en
or email him at aol@racechrono.com
He will have more insight than anyone else here.

ok > there is/was a guy advertising a 2ndhand phone, GPS receiver and Racechrono for anywhere between 200 odd and 500.
He told me he had permission to sell race chrono on the phones and the 'service' he was providing was the install/config of the software which we all know is easy as.
So pay the guy the premium or get a new phone for free on a CAP plan, download RC for free and buy a $115 5Mhz receiver for which he was charging well over 200, EVEN after I PMd him to tell him you can get the gear way cheaper.
He was not happy as he reckons 'I pissed all over his busniess opportunity' when in fact I was concerned fellow riders/racer would get ripped off.....
Anyhow the advert was on trackdaze forum and has since been removed.

I saw him at the show too, I stopped to asked exactly what do i get for the show special of $200 ( i think it was $200, can't remember exactly). You get the 5Hz gps received (which you can buy the exact same one on ebay for $75) and he will set it up the free software on your phone. What a ripoff, I wish I kept his flyer so I could report him to Racechrono.com

Sounds like the one j-rad.
Haven't things changed these days? With the internet and improved communications generally, we can do so many things that we once paid others to do for us. I almost feel for people who do try to make a buck, given that there's so much you can do much cheaper yourself. A few things that come to mind;
- Travel agents. Totally unecessary, I haven't used one for years and have saved heaps and by doing the research I have always ended up with arrangements that suited me better.
- Real estate agents. It's so easy to sell your home, you'd really have to be crazy to use these shonks (yes, I have used them)
- Importers and vendors of every type. How much stuff have I bought online for my bike?
Like I said I kinda feel for the guy at the show; he needs to buy the transponder, plus do the work, he would have paid a fair bit for his stand, I doubt he would be getting rich from it. Not a bad little initiative, people don't have to buy if they don't want to, I'm not so quick to condemn him.

Yeh I agree 100%....
I didn't even give him a hard time > I was (initally) extremely careful and simply posted a reply saying - 'I have racechrono and set it up cheaper than the advert as you can get the GPS Device on line from the same seller that I got it from for $115 delivered (cheapest Qstar Extreme I could find) > however I do not know exactly what is included and who this guys supplier is so I can only comment on my set up - PM me for answers...!'
His return apply was extremely rude and abrupt > then he had the audacity to ask me if I would give him the details of the supplier..!! So after a bit of 2-ing and Fro-ing I gave him the info, he said he would remove his advert and do a cheaper price based on the cheaper supplier > he advises he is in fact paying a fee to RC......I did actually congratulate him on his idea but that my only issue was the price based on the fact I set it all up from scratch for a TOTAL of $115....(including the new free phone I got on the cap which is WAAAAY better than the dodgy 2nd hand mobiles he was selling.......)
Anyhow, lets see if it comes up again!
