Mozzie
04-11-2007, 07:49 PM
We are on the track in three weeks boys,So I think you better put it back together and do it later. Dont loose any bits.

Alex.

Hey Alex ever wondered why Jase bought a Pre-made trackbike? :eyecrazy:

Hi Damien,
I was planning to do it soon so after dropping it at EC yesterday, figured that I may as well get it done now. We're working to try and get it ready before PI in 2 weeks time.
Fingers crossed we can get all the parts ASAP.

Captain
04-11-2007, 07:56 PM
749Dark I didn't want to ask, but as you've mentioned the fall are you OK? no body damage?

749Dark I didn't want to ask, but as you've mentioned the fall are you OK? no body damage?

He was riding his duke today ....
To ride a Duke 749 you gotta be 100% OK otherwise you can't ride it more than a 100 metres.

He looked SUPER :ayyy:

Mozzie
04-11-2007, 08:03 PM
Sorry to hear you came off mate, I hope it was just a little side. From what I can see your panels look alright,How,s the body.

Alex.
04-11-2007, 08:06 PM
T9 the front pushed out abit so I ran it wide off the track and as soon as I touched the mud, that was it. Not much damage at all, just some scratches on the fairing and i'm fine.
This was the catalyst I think to convert it to a trackkie.

lilninja
04-11-2007, 08:10 PM
heheh, well hopefully soon i will be getting me some raceglass and a set of slicks, oggy nobs, tyre warmers, rearsets, Oh jesus I kneed a second Job!!!!!!!!!!!!

Captain
04-11-2007, 08:12 PM
kneed some knobs  :lmao:

Glad to hear you're OK Alex :ayyy:

Turtle
04-11-2007, 08:15 PM
Gee Alex i didn't know you had an off !!! You know its exactly the same as me.....my bike came to be a trakky exactly the same way.....and T9 was the culprit.....

Alex.
04-11-2007, 08:20 PM
Oh yeah, it was too hey! I remember you told me it was T9.
I love the look of your blade - it turned out AWESOME!!!! Cannot wait to see it in the flesh.

jasonbw
04-11-2007, 08:48 PM
They were Alex's words...

Alex: "You know Turtles?"
Jason: "Yeah! Well, I've not seen it in the flesh, but I hear its good!"
Alex: "I want what he has"
Jason: "Wha??? You need a penis enlargement?"
Alex: "Nooo Idiot, the BIKE"
Jason: "Ohhhh... yeah we'll try"

I spoke to Damon Buckmaster himself today... he has raceglass ready, but we'll chat to Racersedge tomorrow in case they have some in stock.

Alex.
04-11-2007, 08:55 PM
AWESOME! If we can get all the kit in one go ASAP then that's tops, off for painting :ayyy:
Can you try and get some of those slicks from Steve sometime this week if possible.
:confused1: What else do we need.

04-11-2007, 09:06 PM
OOO got my eye on this thread...
sorry to hear about T9, i despise that corner... sneaky little one!

jasonbw
04-11-2007, 10:20 PM
Sure, was asking Damon about Rearsets too... I've bolted in the tip over sensor.. found a perfect location... I've taken the PP off your rims, welcome to pick them up or leave them here for when the Duke needs em. Will call Steve tomorrow about a good set of Pirellis. I've done some of the lockwiring. Hope to have the answer on the raceglass by mid morning, shipping quick.. you have to work out what the bike needs to look like tho... stock or not...
A couple of nice to do's: 520 chain conversion, Pipe/filter/dyno, when was the last oil and filter change?

Turtle
04-11-2007, 11:10 PM
While the tyres are off lets polish the outers !!!!!!!!:ayyy:

Alex.

jasonbw
04-11-2007, 11:16 PM
Alex ??? Whatcha think ?

Turtle
04-11-2007, 11:17 PM
way too much hassle, you have to get rid of all the casting bumps with a die grinder or something similar......

Alex.
04-11-2007, 11:19 PM
Yeah it looks pretty trick hey.

Turtle

He Dark.......

Great to meet ya mate - good to see a few RATS battle the rain and slippery conditions......I'm gonna try riding the local Ice Rink with Slicks to see if I get more traction.....it was THAT bad....initially at least :)

GeeZ - When ya said you were going to convert it I didn't realise so soon - good to see some action on it already

Alex.
05-11-2007, 09:51 AM
Yeah likewise j-rad, great to meet you and the guys.
I thought there's no time like the present so we stripped it down as soon as I got to Jase's place and we're now sourcing the parts.

Mate - you are to be congratulated!!!
ME thinkx you need to speak with my mate Bender from C.Stunts.......

He had to leave for QLD at 2am Friday morning - after being back from a honeymoon for 2 days - we rebuilt a 954 + 600F4i - subframes, rims, stunt bars - the whole lot got done in 2 days thanks to some keen mates and

We packed him up at about 10pm........

I'm hanging for the next ride already!!!

I just got the ones for my Triple delivered, but for major "logistic" reasons I can't install them before January.... and before then I've got PI and OP :mod_smilie_rockwoot
I'll take it easy... :ayyy:

I also finally negotiated and agreed for a new set of wheels for my Triple (second hand), that will become my track wheels (I might end up putting slicks on them). I was thinking to have them painted..... :confused1:

Ciao

jasonbw

They told me about the origin of the logo also but I just can't remember where they got it from.

All I know is that they pinched it from somewhere. Like you....... I think it's a great logo.

Good people both Steve & Nat, I will be taking my bike back for all the work. I was really happy with the work he did on the Z.

Having ridden the track on both a classy looking bike and a rat bike (pardon the pun), I know decisively which I'd chose to ride.

Always.. a RATTY looking bike, for me personally, because Im riding to learn the limits.

You do not want the fear of sliding the bike in your mind when riding... if you just spent $1000 on raceglass and $1000 on paint and prep, you will not ride a bike the way it needs to when racing... unless money wasnt a problem... i.e. ifyou only want to enjoy riding on a track for the fun of it then great, if you want to learn to push yourself and your bike as hard as it can go, then the cheaper the better. Psychologically speaking.

I think i will worry a little for my RaceGlass ($1100) but not for my paint job ($200) so i wont really worry i dont think.........at least i know if i need a couple of panels from R.E. they will bolt straight together..:)

"Psychologically speaking" you could well have a point, I don't know much about the psychology of track riding, come to think of it I don't know that much about track riding, period. But I know a good looking bike when I see one.
After all, we have complemented other riders' trackbikes when they have posted pics of their new flash paintjobs, so I have a feeling that I'm not the only one that like to have a good looking bike :ayyy:. Does this slow these riders down? I really don't know, maybe :confused1:

I don't know about naked - don't you need some fairing for aereodynamics?

jasonbw
05-11-2007, 11:12 PM
Does this slow these riders down? I really don't know, maybe :confused1:

Guess all I can say is, when I rode my nice bike around the track I went slow, when I rode my not so nice bike around I went quite a bit faster. So in my case yep.

Make sense? does to me but I dont speak for anyone but me.

Captain
05-11-2007, 11:26 PM
I doubt you ever went 'slow' Jason. :)

When I ran off at T9 and though I might fall, I didn't much like the idea of scraping my shiny bike .. :cursing: So yes, it does make sense, I can see where you're coming from.
Doesn't stop me polishing the bike in between track days though. Hey I've never claimed to be the brightest guy around ....:hatter: Anyhow I fear we've gone off track, my bad, I'm really looking forward to following your thread re the building of a track bike.

You guys worry too much about the bike. What about the rider???
Personally, the bike can smash itself end over end. I won't care..seriously! As long as it wasn't a stupid crash, like being taken out or punted wide. Those crashes are not necessary. My biggest fear is re-injury. When you've been through 9 opps and 5 years of rehab. Pain memories play a big part in self preservation...re-injury is not an option for me. Bikes, buy'em, build'em, track'em again. The human body can only take some beating. And what doesn't kill ya, makes you weaker, none of this stronger BS.

Hahaha, you're certainly showing your age :), but some wise words... After a nice scare on T9 (not once but 3 times!:wtf1: ), i've decided that instead of getting a trackie, maybe invest that money into my skills (or lackof). Trackie will still come but, later down the straight. :p

HUGE thank you to Zee, Zee donated not only his entire night, but the 8 weeks experience of fitting his own raceglass and compressed that into one night to ensure Alex's raceglass was fitted to perfection!

THANKS ZEE, you are a LEGEND !!!

Alex and I felt useless, Zee was zooming around doing everything for us too... damn mate, thanks so much !

Guys, heres some photos of Alex's conversion, stage 2.
P.s. in a couple of days it will be fitted out with a new exhaust, PC3 + filter, dynoed to perfection, soon after a 520 chain conversion, Vortex rearsets, Braided Galfer brake lines, GPS Laptimer, Gearshift indicator, Sweet looking decals, full Enamel RCV style painting... ahh the list goes on... most of this will be ready for the PI trip next week too :)

Stage 3 happened today..

Alex chose Arata hand crafted Exhausts, combined with the Power Commander and DNA filter and a good deal of mapping today with Birdman45 saw the CBR600RR turn into a beast.... he also got his 749 mapped, with its new Termnigoni + ECU + filter :) happy chappy.

Yeap, I have enough knowledge to understand that it would be useless on mine and on anyone else's for that matter. I'm not one of the dudes whoring forums in search of mixture maps as you see on some in the States.

I local did mine here in Wollongong. You may or may not know of him, Steve from Maxpower Cycles. When I went through my map I couldn't believe the amount of change down low and up high in the throttle percentage application (up to 40% richening and leaning). The 30-70% throttle range only needed slight adjustment. So, when I asked to see Alex's map, all I was looking for was if that was a similar characteristic.

No bid deal, just a misinterpretation. :)

Alex has to say the yes/no on the 'mastercard' list... I can say neither Zee, nor I asked or wanted a cent for doing this... I think its because we can do this work, and we are downright RATs. :)

Its completed, all bar decals (waiting on them from the USA), Alex will be taking the CBR to PI tomorrow.... funny, it was near completely stripped earlier today, beyond any photo shown in this thread, I'm happy about a sweet bracket I made for his GPS USB datalogger, you can't see it, holds the unit in the best possible place... I should go out to the garage and photograph it hey :)

The CBR has turned out to our expectations given our very short timeframe. As per Jason's comments, when you see the blue ziralic pearl in the sun, it really is awesome (i've not seen this on a bike before).

We're still waiting on the decals to arrive, rearsets, braided brake lines, and pads which will probably arrive next week. After PI we'll have all of these fitted and post some more photo's up for everyone.

A big thankyou to the following people:

Jason: his dedication and commitment are awesome and without him, this project would not have even started. He has a heart of gold and technical knowledge to match. A very special person to all of us.

Zee: for his assistance with the race glass and advise. It was great watching him to do his stuff.

Chris from Two Wheels Painting: we gave him a challenge and he came through with the goods. Great guy!

Damon from Buckmaster Racing: again, we had a strict timeframe and he did everything he could to get us the race glass in time. Great guy!

Trevor from Doin Bikes: it was great to finally meet him and get the bike tuned. The Arata sounds tops :ayyy:

Ray: for his advise and suggestions for various options.

All the RATS who've offered their support and encouragement.

We did this as a challenge to convert a road bike into a dedicated track bike in just over 1 week. We could have skimped on things however as we were starting out with a good base, we kept to the same high OEM standard. I was fortunate that the people helping out are truely amazing individuals and I am so grateful for all the help, assistance, and advise (words cannot describe my gratitude). My apologies if I have forgotten anyone.

In terms of total $$$ spent to get to this point, it really does vary depending upon what you are starting with as a base and what you're intentions/expectations are. We had a particular budget however it was blown out of the water but we feel that the results are worth it.

If you had the time to slowly do a trackbike conversion, and provided that the donor bike was in reasonably good condition, it could cost you anywhere from $2k-$5k obviously depending upon the parts chosen (new or second-hand), quality of finish, performance modifications etc. You could probably do it abit cheaper however it comes down to what your expectations are (in my opinion).

Again, my heartfelt thanks to everyone!

I'm sure there's a thread about building ur trackie v buying race-ready... but a good reason why to D.I.Y is because of the satisfaction you get when you finish. Reading this thread, i can tell that everyone who was involved would be proud as punch to see the finished project (in action)!!!

On any bike with dual injectors, the difference especially above 7K rpm, can be way bigger than what you will see on a bike with one set of injectors. Reason being, the PC only controls the injectors that are working all the time, ie: bottom set, and so once the top set come into play, you need greatewr changes to the bottom set to change the overall fueling to the same degree as you'd need to change one set. So you are infact still changing the mix the same percentage OVERALL< but the numbers you need to get it there, due to the above, are way bigger. Hope this helps.

Nah, haven't heard of Max powewr before (except on the Simpsons. Haha) , where are they and what do they have/do etc? Thanks

My first couple of sessions at PI involved just getting used to the bike, riding on slicks for the first time, and the unfamiliar track layout. Once I started to get used to both, I slowly started to increase my pace and boy did the bike go well (until my hayfever kicked in and smashed me :( ).

The CBR feels much sharper to turn, has more mid-range punch, and just feels alot more responsive than what it was like in streetbike trim. I cannot wait until the last of the parts arrive so we can complete this project. Hopefully it will be finished before OP on the 1st Dec.

The bike looked awesome at PI both in the garage and on the track. Alex even washed the bugs off it in the garage between sessions :)
Man that place had some bugs and flies too, the buggers were everywhere.

I think I was picking up the most bugs hey, couldn't believe how covered the bike was getting after one session :lmao:
Was great watching Bigdog and Falco cut loose on the track in our group. Man you guys are quick!

Completely forgot about that Damo. I must remember that for OP.

Riding on slicks did feel different as the bike was so much easier turning into corners and the level of grip is awesome. They're definately worth getting.
Dan bought some Metzler Racetecs K2 and was really impressed with them (they're basically road legal slicks). That would be a good option if you want just one set of tyres (i'd buy these for my streetbike).

I completely missed the pic of bike with paint, now because it has blue bits you get my nod :mod_smilie_rockwoot

Funny you did your wheels that color because my road bike wheels are that color which was just done so you must have good taste :ayyy:
