A bit more info on his testing:

General info on oil filters:

Heres an interesting X reference for oil filters.. i.e. which brand/model will fit your bike etc:

What do you reckon, would you trust his findings.. I'm searching moreo n this purolater filter and finding quite a few MC forums talking about them, group buys and feedback... comments?

Hmmmmmmmmmm........

Manufacturers spend millions in R&D so you'd normally think they'd get it right... I can think of a few models of ZXs though that perhaps didn't quite cut the grade (sorry all you green fans out there - I LOVE the new modesl - but lets face it KawaSUZKI only starting making better bikes once they joined forces with Suzuki...bwhahahaha

being serious now - I'd probably just stick to the orig.....
I am very wary of internet type 'reviews' when they are also selling products....not to say it's not the real deal...just wary. Especially when a motor rebuild costs ALOT.......

I've ridden a 96 + 2001 GSXR750 stunt riding - on the 96 - I was lazy and changed oil every 5000 - after 50,000 I dropped main bearings - then again at 100,000. This is not really due to the oil or filter but doing wheelies all the time and running the sump dry (need that Yoshi DUAL oil pickup MMMMmmm)
With the 2001 model I started changing oil every 2000-3000kms and NEVER had another main bearing go.......and I always used OEM filters...

so if it ain't broke.....

I always use genuine filters in the cars & bike.
The manufactuers ask the oil filter makers to make specific filter to suit the motor. They both put put x amount of dollars into engineering & imo, they kinda are hard to beat.

I cant find the 2 he recommends for sale down here though, only in the US.

This is the feedback I was looking for, but I cant get past his tests of filtration... I don't blindly trust the manufacturers to get it right, they probably don't design the filters, maybe a 3rd party do?

Supercheap auto stock the puroline (called purolater in the USA), called and its $16 for the long one that suits most Honda, Kawa and Suzukis.

I read this a while ago and switched from K&N to Vesrah.

You can now buy vesrah filters from supercheap for $17

The manual for my bike suggests changing the filter every 2nd oil dump which suggest supreme confidence in their filters but I change my oil and filter regularly.

if oil filters are all that important then why do posties and VW's last forever ?

fresh regular oil changes have always been the way to go

Not to mention that OEM filters would be made by someone else anyway, and qutie possibly one of the companies he recommends. LOL It's like buying GYTR parts, Yamah don't make them......... they are just made by someone else, branded Yamaha and sold as "Yamaha specific parts", whatever............ same with Honda oil, or Yamalube etc etc, the Yammy oil is just Castrol.......... anyone's motor blown up using it though? And how many people have had engine probs due to bad filters? Hmmmmmmmm? Hahaha funny stuff

based on this stuff, and additional searching I found that the Cooper 1041 fits the Firestorm and is of very high quality. Have been using them now for 12 months ( about 4 oil changes) and the oil definitely stays cleaner for longer. Could be due to better filtration, or due to the larger filter area as it is a longer filter. Cooper don't make one that fits the wife's Ducati though.

But Jason, if there is an issue with an OEM filter, then surely it would effect so many people that a recall would be on order.

im on the stick to the manufacturers bandwagon..it seems to work so why bother changing..

without reading the whole articles.. what claim are they making about increased longivity of the motor?

Do they sell bike filters at SuperCheap ?

When I was racing cars we would only use Purolater filters from the States.
With the FZR I use K&N.

I just use the aftermarket coke can filled with my wife's stockings :)

It is really like everything in this world there is always something that can be better but in most cases the normal stuff works well enough your never going to notice a difference. I change my oil every 5000kms with my bikes & 10000kms with my cars & in my life time I have never had a problem related to oil contamination. The filter is there to make sure anything that is big enough to harm motor wont pass through & any oil filter will do that.
