I've decided to ditch the chef apprenticeship for now atleast. I've just lost my passion for it, but one thing that I've always loved, and still love doing is taking things apart, finding out how they work, fixing it then piecing it back together. so I've decided to take a swing at becoming an apprentice bike mechanic. I love riding my bike, there's actually very few things i'd rather do at this time, but I want to learn more about bikes, combine my passion for taking things apart and fixing them, with my passion for bikes.. reckon it sounds like a good idea? is a mechanics apprenticeship a high stress job? hospitality is supposed to be one of the hardest industries to work in so if it is, I'm in!:mod_smilie_rockwoot

Im a car mechanic by trade and it sucked and was poorly paid. Not many girls in it. There was someone on another forum trying to get into it and had a lot of problems finding someone that would employ a female. It's good knowledge to have, but beware the so called friends who invite you over for a bbq but suprise you with a busted bike.
I enjoy working on cars and bikes now that i'm off the tools and doing other things full time, so its like a hobby now.
I'd suggest getinig onto the appreticeship placement companies and seeing what they can offer.
The only good thing about being a mechanic is driving/riding other peoples :D

mate stay a chef. Better money and your trade can take you all over the world. Ive worked both in car and bike dealerships and almost all mechanics hate their job and wished they did something else. Pay isn't good and you wont get to pull apart many motors and such. All mostly tune ups and crash repairs in shops.
You might think its its fun but really the job isn't so great as you also have the customers to keep happy. Think twice b4 you drop out with being a cheif.
Shit money! But a mentally rewarding job...still shit money though. :cursing:
I here Cycle City flat out.....Greg may need a hand. An excellent mechanic to learn from :ayyy:

mm true. but if I ever want to go back to my chef apprenticeship, all I have to do is make a call to my old boss and he'll take me back at Jimmy Liks. and with the qualifications I already have and the modules I did at TAFE during my app. ship it takes 1-1.5 years off my apprenticeship anyways. just thought I'd try something that I haven't tried yet, even just to expand my knowledge of bikes.

Sorry for callin you a girl Julz, but you get that with a nick like that ;)
As for the pay, It's almost doubled now from what I started on and its still crap.
If you want to learn about bikes, buy an old shitter and pull it apart. There are heaps of people and info on the net that you can use to learn from. And once you understand the basics its not that hard really.
Mechanics are always going to be dirty smelly people that people always look down on. Thanks to the likes of Jamie Oliver, Chef's are now looked at differently. Ignorant people (most of society) see most tradies as just someone with no imagination and/or limited intelligence. If they had talent they'd be an arty type, intelligent and they'd be scamming the govt for years going to uni for nothing, or in a med lab making ground breaking discoveries. Even dressing up the mechanics title to Technician does nothing. your hands still have grease and crap embedded in them.
I just can't discourage people enough from mechanical trades.

yep your ahnds get rooted from the oil and crap each day. Also why dont you do a short course at tafe with mechanics. Im sure you can do this and not have to be employed in the motor trade. Ive known alot of mechanics who dont like what they do. Just learn what ya can about mechanics but dont be a mechanic is best.

nah your right, mate. my names only one letter in excess of being a girls name anyway XD.
Eh, I'm a wierd looking, metalhead, binge drinker, with an emo haircut, piercings and tattoos. Think people don't look don't on me already? more to the point. do ya' think I give a shit? :p If i went through life doing what the majority of what society wanted me to do I'd listen to pop, wear a "salmon" colour shirt, be a beefcake, and be completely straight, all of which are horrifying to me:lmao:
