one of my mates just got the gears on his Celica hand timed, and says that it didn't cost him that much to get it done. when he explained it to me It sounded like a pretty rockin' idea. Does anyonbe know if you could get the same thing done to a bike?
Cheers,
Julz

Could you expand a bit? Never heard of that! Sounds interesting Julz.

Never heard of it. What is it? How do they do it? and what is the outcome?

Hand timed gears, you sure this person is a mate & not a clown because I have nfi what hand timed gears are, they could be gears that someone has had in there hand at some time :lmao:

Yeah, i've been around mechanical stuff for a long time and i haven't heard of that B4 ??

it's when they put your car onto a dyno with you sitting in it, and then the speed gradually increases, and you change the gears when your happy to and they set the gears around that so you get the most out of each gear change. or something like that XD
IE: if you for some reason like to rev the shit out of your gears, then they set it like that and you will gain the most out of each gear when you change.

OK, still not sure how the 'set' the gears but thanks for the info. :ayyy:

ok, say you usually get upto 40 KPH in 1st, but you want to push your bike a bit harder, use the dyno to let your bike get to say 50KPH without over-revving.
I'm not sure how they (the mechanics or whoever) set them exactly either XD

Ok i think i got this one. But only if this car is a auto & modern.
A computer controled auto in a car can be set to change gears at any speed/RPM by reprograming the setings. but only on a auo & only on a computer controled box. If this is what he got done then no go on a bike.

BAH! infernal machines!:cursing:
his celica is a classic but I know he's modified the shit out of it so pretty much the only original parts is the interior and bodywork. not sure if it's a manual or auto though.

If I could handle maxing out at, what? 70KPH then I'd get an auto scooter and get the gears hand timed XD

most modern 1000's rev out in 1st above all Aus speed limits, i.e. 130 or so.

Sounds like the best explanation. I was thinking it had to be something to do with holding an auto in gear for a longer duration.

You can use a dyno [and the power curve graphed by it] to determine a range that you want to run in, then you can very simply work out what difference to have between each ratio, so that you "make the most" of each gear by not dropping out of this range on shifts, or not needing to overrev in certain gears to keep it on the boil after a shift.
But while this is very easy to work out. The time and expense of changing internal gear ratios [especially on a car] is very very far from cheap.

I may aswell ask another techy question whilst I'm at it :p
with the Ducati 1098 S, it comes with a thing they called the DDA (Ducati Data Analysis) whish records upto 2.5hours worth of performance data which is saved to a USB that plugs into the bike. It records speed, RPM's and whatnot does anyone know if theirs anything out on the market like that for other bikes?
just curious

And not many boxs around that you can get dif ratios for without spending mega buks on the box to start with.

Yeps. There are but they normally replacing the dash unit with something like a veypor. You can obviously only record info from your bike that you already have sensors for [unless of course you fit them yourself]. Some units even have gps so you can trace trips or even work out a lap time and acceleration trace for a circuit.
there's heaps of cool stuff but costs lots of money.

I asked my mate to elaborate on it and apparently, they change the size of the cogs/gears in the transmission, which changes the gear ratios, therefore changing the length of the gears.

Well you could always go MOTEC. How much money do you have:)
You could change the gear ratio's in your bike, but I wouldn't bother. I dial my gears to a track by changing sprockets. Much cheaper and can be done on the spot. Don't have to pull the bike apart to do it.

I know this can be done but you say your mate told you it didn't cost much. Is he rich ? the only peaple that would call such a mod cheap would have to be loaded.

well, he's not rich as such, but he had a big inheritence that he got when he turned 18 XD
