Hi All,

Just getting the bike back together after turn 8 bingle and broken leg!!!!!

There has been no major damage to my R1 but when it hit the subframe it broke off the tube of metal that runs at the furthest end of the subframe between to two main side bars that run up either side of the subframe - if that makes sense. The bike hit the gravel up right but then slowed down turned left and went up and over (squashed tank and top most of subframe was damaged). The exhaust did not even get damaged.

Can anyone advise is this is still okay to ride or will I have to get this welded on again???

Can anyone advise where I can get a replacement top faring bracket for 2000/2001 R1. I cannot find any second hand and I thought that after market ones would have been cheaper than what I have seen.

I'll try to get pics for you tonight BigLunt, the R1 I ride (Mono's old one), its a 98 model and that part was damaged also, I belive its been grinded off and a cross bar just put in place.. no big deal.. not structural.

Hey Jason,

Yep thats the one I was referring to.

I think that it is a little different on the 2000/2001 but it looks very similar.

I think I may just bolt someting across just for piece of mind.

You got any other photos of your ride? I thought yours was a later model R1 to be honest. What mods have been done to your track bike? I was thinking of getting something newer but it has never let me down and has been reliable as.

I am thinking of getting the front forks revalved and resprung rather than going down the full exhaust, jet kit road. All I have done is add a M4 slipon and got my hands on a race tech rear shock which made a world of difference to the handling and lean angle clearance (I was scraping the alternator cover before the rear shock was put on!!!!). I am pretty happy with it though considering I am doing 1min 40's at Eastern Creek on a relatively stock bike - hey I am no racer by any account.

Thanks for the info I think I may make some L brackets to secure the ducktail as you have.

If you have any other tips I would be interested.

Cheers

Wish I had good info but I just bought the bike as is.. Mono - one of the site admins here, sold it to me in its top condition.
He had the jet kit and slip on done.. 150hp ! fantastic torque too, heres (http://members.iinet.com.au/~jasonbw/photos/bikes/My_1998_R1/r1_dyno.jpg)the graph.
1 Min 40, I dont know what Superbike lap times were back in 98, but seriously, thats very fast, esp with the front end as stock.

If you can get a hold of an 02 set of forks and steering head I hear they're about the closest thing to the best suspension possible for this model.. source was off the www.r1-forum.com (http://www.r1-forum.com) site

Mono might give more info on the R1 suspension mods as he has the same model but racetech sorted.. he said the diff was like night and day.

I'll get more photos with the ducktail off, and more detail on the L brackets if that helps?

Cheers
Jason

EDIT: Just to add, found a great DIY 1/5 throttle mod, which is something I'm keen to do as Im sick of re-adjusting to get to full throttle, heres (http://home.earthlink.net/~smith547/tutorial/tutorial2.html)the site. Also got some good info from the suspension guys like Zeno here on this site (http://www.activeboard.com/forum.spark?forumID=45537&p=3&topicID=13264013).

Jason,

I can't believe the power from your 99 model that is excellent!!! Are you sure its a slip on and not a full system? If so what pipe do you have, what filter and jet kit - that is excellent power and torque for such little mods - I am blown away by that.

I have to fess up - I used to marshall for Moto Concepts for about 3 years (3 -4 ride days a month) before the new contract was arranged with the Eastern Creek ride day crew. So you can say I have done my fair share of laps around EC and know it pretty well - helps riding in the A grade for most of that. Despite doing only 2 track days in the last 12 months still reeled off quick times so I am pretty happy with that. Have to say though that the pace of the Eastern Creek ride days is much slower than I was used to from Moto Concept days - that is until some of the fast boys from the National Series come out to play and then they make me feel so slow!!!!!!!!!!

Well I have the racetech rear shock and it made a huge difference I am just thinking that if I am going to push may as well get the forks sorted out.

Never had an issue with the throttle - do they lose full throttle over time? I have to say that the old girl goes pretty well for pretty stock standard bike with carbs. I think she needs a bit of attention just for the fact that she has probably done about 8000kms on the track over the past few years.

Don't go to too much trouble with the photos as the ones you had steered me in the right direction. I am going to try and OXY the top fairing bracket back in shape and see how I go.

Let me know if you do the DIY throttle mod as it makes sense.

Cant wait to get the bike back in one piece and head ou to do a ride day with the RATS crew. I may need to swallow my pride and take it out as it is - looks like absolute crap with the second hand glass. Red and white race glass that was used on the road for 3 years, blue squashed tank and blue front wheel cover!!!! Instrument cluster that is working but missing some of the plastic that covers the tacho.

It really looks like it was created from a spare parts bin. Attached are some photos of the before, some of the damage from the Turn 8 dive I had about 2 1/2 months ago

Ouch, thats such a sad sight :(

All the best with the oxy, you are talking just a propane torch though arent you? Worst case, even if its close you can use tiny pvc pipe to extend from the bracket to the fairing mounts, thats what mine has... I assume it was done like that so theres better airflow, the stock position of the screen would suit a tiny japanese guy.. not my body :)

Yeah, that power is amazing, Steve from Maxpower down here did that himself, its a slip on, the exhaust valve is still in the stock headers, connected and all... even the 5th valve in the engine is still in place!!!!
He said it took him a while, but just talking to him I could hear he was satisfied in the way that you know he enjoyed the challenge. I'll be sure to get him to do all my road bike servicing from now :)

Turn 8.. ouch! Visited that dirt 10 years ago myself on my first trackday, enough to scare me away from the track for 10 years :) :) :)

I believe Zeno has some good experience with our model R1's, he's not too far so I hope to enlist him to help me get the most from the stock forks I have. Its sprung perfectly for me, but I think I'm spoilt by my daily commuter (Ohlins CBR1000RR - bad move, now I know when the suspension of other bikes is crappy :)).

If you need help making those L brackets I have all the gear to make them, I'll make a couple of mail them up if that helps.

Filter wise, I *think* its BMC, need to pop that out to look-see, I dont know the model of the jet kit but I'd have to suspect its from 'Factory' and not K&N considering that power. Hey, theres a factory Jet kit for our bikes on eBay REALLY cheap right now. I can call Steve and ask if you want to know to decide on the auction? pop me a PM and I'll call right away.

Just remember if that front fairing stay is giving you the shits trying to get it back to shape then yell out, I can somehow arrange to get you mine so you have a template to work with. I remember looking at my bent ZX12 stay once, thinking it looked reasonable, wasnt till I compared it to a straight one to realise how many bloody angles there are!!!

Any idea when you'll be joining us? The shittier the bike looks, the better :) its a trackie :)

Looks worse than it really is plus first crash that I have had since riding for 9 years and 5 years worth of track days.

I am going to give it a go with the oxy and see what happens one of the wreckers they had one that was slightly out that I could have for $50 so I may check it out.

Turn 8 has not really phased me as I was ready to crash and the bike was off the track before I had to jump off!!! Test will be the first time I head around that corner!!

Thanks for the offer on the brackets - I have some time on my hands this weekend so I am going to head off to the hardware and get cracking. The jet kit on ebay is cheap bu the problem is that the needles and jet pilots that are missing are the ones that are usually used on the bikes!!!!!

Can't make the next RATS Eastern Creek Ride I may end up doing the 6th/7th of October first to run the bike slowly and check the front end. Probably manage to get the bike in primer first ready for the flash paint job - mate of mine owns flooring business and said he will pay for the paint job if he can spray in his business colour and put some sign writing on it - his vans are bright orange so it is very tempting and I can see it now with the black wheels!!

That part of the subframe doesnt really look like it holds anything, especially on a track bike as you really sit on the battery.

If your worried about vibration or structural strength in another crash, I would bolt a plate to it.
