View Full Version : tie down "monkey straps"
Hi. A mate is after a set of those straps, you know... the straps that slip onto the handlebars and the tie-downs pass through them...
Does anyone have a set we can borrow for the 29th track day?
Fullhouse, do you guys have them at work? Can you PM me a price?
Cheers

Forget about the monkey straps, unless you want to stuff up your fork seals.
Best ones for the job are ratchet tie downs (straps only no hooks), use them on the lowest part of the forks closest to the axle (trust me I do this for a living).
I recommend the the bike tow straps from super cheap auto. Cost about $30 bucks each but well worth it.

hey Ricardo, do you have a pic of what you are trying to explain, im a bit confused...(and confused about what you mean, ha) do you mean attach to the axle or the bottom triple clamp.. i am always looking for a better way to stop seals blowing

ive got 4 tie downs if ya like to use them. They will do the job just fine. If the tie downs come too close to the fairing at all you just wrap some rags around them so not to rub. Ive tie down plenty of bikes transporting them in utes when at the bike shop.

so long as the front is done right the back can bounce around a bit. Trick is you just dont over tight the front down with the seals might pop or leak. Just compress the forks enough so as the bike is stable. Dont have to pull on the ties as hard as possible to get the forks not to be able to give any more.

Ricardo is suggesting tho you dont need to compress the forks... just tie them from the lower legs, around the bottom of the forks..
I did just that using Spence's advice at the race school monday, the front was completely secure, then just a tie down each side on the back pulling the rear down a tad and the bike was rock solid.

just tie them from the lower legs, around the bottom of the forks..
Jase, do you mean putting the tie-downs between the fork and axle/disks?

close, keep away from the discs, they bend, just tie down at the bottom of the chromed part, the tie straps I left at your place you just feed the strap through and the J hook feeds through the loop at the end of the strap ... easy as.
Heres the method I use
Put ramp on trailer.
Locate race stand near the trailer so you can reach it easily after pushing the bike up.
Push bike up trailer (engine running to help), so the front wheel at touching the bar (all the way in)
Put race stand on
The bike is now stable, take your time and tie down the two front forks as described
wrap the smaller tie around the front wheel and bar so the bike wont go backwards
Tie down from the rear footpegs to the eyelets on the trailer slightly forward of the footpegs (just behind the trailers wheel guard).
Takes a couple of minutes, dead easy.
Alex.

I'll do pics next time and will post them up, single person loading and unloading is very very easy this way, suprised me totally, and best of all it can be left on the trailer for days/weeks/whatever and it'll not harm it in any way.
P.s. I've heard wrapping your slicks in cling wrap or similar preserves them... honestly dont know if its true, kinda logical! Wouldnt hurt :)
