haga hopes of challenging for victory at Phillip Island have taken a knock after a collision with Ruben Xaus during warm-up left his Ducati Xerox team working flat out to rebuild his bike.

Tangling at turn one, while both riders were unhurt in the incident, Haga's Ducati suffered considerable damage, prompting the Xerox team to begin a full rebuild with just two hours to go before the opening race of the day.

For Xaus, the fall marks his fourth of the weekend thus far and rumours circulating that he will not take part in the races due to a lack of confidence with the bike. Other reports suggest a shortage of spare parts will rule him out.

Haga will start from tenth position on the grid.

Motorcyclist dies after collision on Phillip Island circuit
PAUL MILLAR March 1, 2010 - 4:37PM

A 72-year-old man died at Phillip Island this afternoon after his high powered bike collided with another bike during a public ride day at the race circuit.

The collision occurred around 12.50pm. Investigators believe the 72-year-old man, from interstate, was riding a Suzuki GSXR 600 around the track when he dropped the bike in turn two.
Another rider, a 50-year-old man from New South Wales then hit the fallen rider and his bike. The 72-year-old died at the scene but is yet to be formally identified.

Police and Worksafe officers are at the scene and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Very sad news indeed...

This is sad but wats this about? "Under the terms and conditions for the ride, the organisers recommended that all riders wear full leathers and those choosing not to wear the protective gear were restricted to 120km/h." I didnt no it was an option but u'd b stupid to try it

thats terrible for someone to die at a trackday
But its classic media. The authorities wont tell them what happened or the cause, so they quote a policy regarding danger and leave it all open ended. Classic tracey grimshaw bullshit.
i worked for a shipping company and we dealt with a ship that exported nuclear waste 3 ports after it visited Newcastle. They rang the office every 5 minutes and we kept telling them no comment, ring our media department. The newcastle herald publishes an article about toxic waste getting sneaked out of our country at night, and quoted the company name and made it seem all suss that we wouldnt tell them anything about the farm equipment it took to Port Kembla after it left Newcastle.

I dont think speed limiting is a valid way of covering off unsafe apparel. Who polices this, and how? Radar? Not likely. Also a speed limit isn't going to help you when you bin it in a turn. Nothing about not allowing open faced helmets either...

They also shouldn't have groups out there together where the speed differential is so great. You might have someone doing 250 overtaking someone speed-limited to 120, all while tipping into turn 1 in a crowd of people. That's unsafe in my book.

My $0.02

Just go racing ... some historics have 100yr races age of rider + age of bike so you get 30year olds on something from the 1920/1930s or a 70yr old on a 70's bike - normally the old guys win .... BEARS have had a couple of late 60 early 70's guys race (1098 675 etc)... main problem is if they fall it hurts more for longer :)

Speaking with a neigbour whose brother in law was riding behind when accident happen said that the guys helmet came off during the accident
our trip down had a incident of our own, a guy came off on the omeo highway just short of bruthen, broken, tib/ fib (nice long rod), smashed collarbone (plate 6 screws) and a broken hip, just got back from tralagon hospital last night, that section of road accounts for a few accidents (me included , many years ago)
