Checa sits on top after first day of testing at Phillip Island

Phillip Island, Sunday 21 February 2010

Privateer Ducati rider Carlos Checa set the quickest time of the first day of track action at the official tests in Phillip Island, taking his Althea Ducati to a 1'31.959 lap time. His pace was less than one second slower than the track best in this class, 1'31.050, which was set in qualifying for the 2009 race.

The official Ducati Xerox machine of Michel Fabrizio was second quickest in the opening sessions, 0.390 seconds behind the flying Checa around the 4.445km circuit in Victoria.

Both top riders set their best times in the afternoon session, when track surface temperatures reached, 46°C, but in the slightly cooler morning session Leon Haslam (Suzuki Alstare) was still fast enough for third in the combined times, with Noriyuki Haga (Ducati Xerox) fourth.

Jonathan Rea (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) pushed his machine to fifth place, just over half a second behind leader Checa, while another British rider, Shane Byrne (Ducati Althea) was sixth.

After suffering many injuries in 2009, Max Neukirchner (Hannspree Ten Kate Honda) proved himself fast and focused on day one, going seventh, heading off Max Biaggi, on the leading Aprilia Alitalia machine.

A top day for the private Ducatis in general saw Jakub Smrz ninth on his Pata B&G Racing 1098R, while DFX Ducati rider Lorenzo Lanzi rounded out the top ten.

Leading Yamaha rider was James Toseland (Sterilgarda Yamaha) 11th quickest while the top Kawasaki lap was set by Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team), 13th fastest of 23 riders.

Top local rider proved to be Troy Corser (BMW Motorrad Motorsport) and the local favourite was also the highest ranked BMW competitor, in 14th.

Carlos Checa: "A very good start, quite positive. We didn't expect this performance this early and especially not at this track, which is not easy. But we know that the Ducati can work quite well here and we arrived in Phillip Island after a quite good job in testing at Valencia. The team's understanding of the bike is good, and also they helped me a lot to understand how to ride this bike in the right way. The feeling on the bike is special and so far it is a good experience to ride it."

Michel Fabrizio: "We went quite well but the pace of Carlos Checa was very, very fast. I have a new engineer and we are working well. We made things better as we changed more and more on the bike but we just ran out of time in the afternoon session. We did not so bad, and I am sure we can improve tomorrow if the conditions remain good."

Programme:
Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport today focussed on the basic set-up of Troy Corser's (AUS) and Ruben Xaus' (ESP) BMW S 1000 RR. With the first World Championship race weekend just ahead, the riders spent a lot of time out on the track. During the second session, Ruben crashed in turn 10, but was able to return to the team garage and to continue testing. The team did not face any technical problems.

Troy Corser:

Bike: BMW S 1000 RR

Test kilometres today: 347 (78 laps)

Fastest lap free practice 1: 1:33.766 min / Fastest lap free practice 2: 1:33.299 min "It is always nice to come to Phillip Island as it is my home race. The bike is quite different to when we came here last year. Today we were testing different tyres and worked on the balance of the bike. We tried to find grip and made adjustments step by step."

Ruben Xaus:

Bike: BMW S 1000 RR

Test kilometres today: 316 (71 laps)

Fastest lap free practice 1: 1:34.246 min / Fastest lap free practice 2: 1:33.498 min "Compared to last year's season start, the bike feels a lot better. We found a lot of grip. I fell off the bike in turn 10 today. However, I was able to bring the bike back to the garage and we could improve our lap time later. So it was not a big issue."

What comes next:
The team will continue testing at Phillip Island Circuit on Monday.

HAGA AND FABRIZIO (DUCATI XEROX) SET STRONG PACE ON DAY ONE OF TESTING AT PHILLIP ISLAND

Phillip Island (Australia), Sunday 21st February: in very warm conditions (air temperature 26°, track 34°), the Ducati Xerox riders Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio made the most of the track time during this, the first of two days of testing before the championship opens here next weekend.

In the first of the day's sessions both riders were immediately comfortable, setting some very fast lap times right from the start. The team worked with Noriyuki and Michel to find a strong race pace and understand which tyres will work best in the Australian heat. Having completed more than 40 laps each in the morning, Noriyuki and Michel closed that particular session with the second and third fastest laps respectively, followed by the three private Ducatis of Checa, Lanzi and Byrne.

The Superbike riders returned to the track at 3.30, the asphalt having reached 41°. Despite the heat, both riders continued to make fast laps and towards the end of the session Michel was able to improve on his best time set this morning to close day one with the second fastest time overall. Nori spend the second part of the session testing Pirelli's different solutions, and finished today in fourth place, just two tenths of a second behind his team-mate.

Noriyuki Haga
"It's been a positive day. We tried various things, making changes to the rear suspension setting and testing the different tyres on offer. The problem is being able to identify a direction during these test days that will also work next Sunday, it's difficult to predict how the conditions will be in a week's time. Anyway we've worked hard today and made some good progress."

Michel Fabrizio
"It hasn't gone badly today. We've worked mainly on tyres, trying to find a good race pace. We're not quite there yet but we've made a good start and know what there is to do tomorrow. It's very hot but after our recent cold and wet tests in Portimao and Valencia we can't complain!"

TIMES - DAY 1 - Checa (Ducati) 1m31.9s; Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) 1m32.3s; Haslam (Suzuki) 1m32.4s; Haga (Ducati Xerox) 1m32.5s; Rea Lanzi (Ducati) 1m32.5s; Byrne (Ducati) 1m32.6s; Neukirchner (Honda) 1m32.7s; Biaggi (Aprilia) 1m32.8s

The Yamaha Sterilgarda WSB Team complete the first day of testing in Phillip Island

British riders James Toseland and Cal Crutchlow completed their first day of testing on the Phillip Island circuit in Australia today. The day was without incident barring a small crash by Crutchlow in the afternoon session. This was the first outing for the riders on the 2010 bike, both Toseland and Crutchlow focussed with their team on setting up the machine ahead of next week's season opening race.
James Toseland, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (11th 1'33.1)

"A steady day for us today. We've been focussing on getting the new chassis set-up right, so not been trying to break any lap records, just solid track time to fine tune the bike. I'm looking forward to getting back out tomorrow and improving on today."

Cal Crutchlow, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team (15th 1'33.4)

"Not the fastest day I've had, it doesn't feel natural to be that low on the times, but I know we'll improve on that tomorrow. It's only our first day on the new bike so we're really working hard to get the set up right so we can hit the ground running."

Massimo Meregalli, Yamaha Sterilgarda World Superbike Team Manager

"Today was our first running in session for the new bike. The riders have been working to dial in the chassis for the Phillip Island circuit, and we will continue to do so tomorrow. We received valuable feedback from both James and Cal through both sessions and will use that to fine tune for tomorrow. Cal had a small crash this afternoon, but luckily received no injuries so can carry on as normal.

SBK: FIRST DAY OF TESTS AT PHILLIP ISLAND

A beautiful southern late summer day is the setting for the first day of In Front Tests on the Phillip Island track where Friday the 26th the first round of the 2010 SBK season will be held. The excellent weather conditions and the track allowed the riders and the teams to do their best work from the very start. At the end of the day Carlos Checa on Althea team's Ducati held the best time at 1'31"959.

Eighth for Biaggi with 1'32"832 at 0"832 behind the Spanish rider. Max concentrated his work on finding the best balance for his RSV4, also trying the new cam drive gear engine propulsion. Twentieth place for Leon Camier with 1'33"852 at 1"893 off Checa's best time. The young English rider is making his debut here at Phillip Island, so he had to memorise the difficult Australian track whilst at the same time trying to find the best base setting to work on in anticipation of the race.

Compared to the races at the end of last year's season, the situation is a little bit different - stated Biaggi - this is a peculiar circuit where you have to be in good shape to stay up front. We are still suffering in the deceleration phase where we need to mitigate vibrations and skipping coming into the turns which hurts safety, and we need to do it with the materials which are available to us here. Tomorrow we will work on this, trying to resolve it as best as possible".

It was a very intense day - Camier said - it was the first time for me here and I had to learn the track, which is not complicated to memorise, but it is really difficult to ride fast on straight away. I'm consistent enough, although the pace still needs to improve quite a bit, but I'm lacking in the single lap which is very important for the qualifiers since a good position on the grid will help me run a good race. Considering that this is the first day, I'm at a good starting point. I'm sure that there is still a lot of work to do but I'm very confident".

HASLAM 3RD ON PHILLIP ISLAND OPENING DAY

Team Suzuki Press Office - February 21.

Briton Leon Haslam ended the first day of the Infront Motor Sports Phillip Island World Superbike tests with the third fastest lap just behind Carlos Checa (Ducati) and Michel Fabrizio (Ducati).

Despite missing his flight due to a snowbound Birmingham airport, and only arriving in the early hours of this morning, Sylvain Guintoli managed to stay awake all day and finished a very creditable 12th.

Leon Haslam - 3rd, 1:32.484:

"I am really happy because we got through a lot of stuff and also managed to work through some of the tyres that we may use in next weekend's race. I feel we've got a good bike set-up and good ideas which directions to take tomorrow and it has all been very positive so far.

"Phillip Island is always hard on tyres because there are so many left-handers, so you really have to choose your tyres carefully. The teamwork today has been very good and we are all getting along great. Tomorrow we'll set up the two bikes the same and then do a back-to-back test using different tyres."

Sylvain Guintoli - 12th, 1:33.190:

"I felt fine in the morning session, but the afternoon one was a bit of a struggle towards the end. My flight was cancelled because the airport was more or less closed and so I only arrived this morning. But, I like this track and I like riding this bike at this track, so I enjoyed myself despite the jet-lag. I felt very comfortable on the bike today and now I just want to race it!"

FABRIZIO (DUCATI XEROX) ON TOP AS TESTING CONCLUDES TODAY AT PHILLIP ISLAND

Phillip Island (Australia), Monday 22nd February: after rain showers during the night the Ducati Xerox riders Noriyuki Haga and Michel Fabrizio waited for an hour this morning before exiting on track to continue with yesterday's work. The two team-mates made the remaining part of the session count, clocking up some consistently fast times. In the final minutes of the session, Michel was able to improve on the best time he set yesterday by seven tenths of a second, to register the fastest time of the morning (1m31.650), an extremely impressive lap time for a Superbike at Phillip Island. Only Fabrizio and Byrne, he too on the Ducati 1198 with team Althea Racing, ducked under the 1m32 barrier this morning, followed by Checa, team-mate to Byrne, and Haga in fourth.

In the final session this afternoon Michel was once again very fast but did not manage to improve on the flying lap made this morning. Progress was however made and both Michel and Noriyuki deemed the test a success. At the end of the two-day test, it was Ducati Xerox's Italian rider who topped the timesheets, followed by the Ducati 1198s of privateers Byrne, Smrz and Checa; Haga closed in overall sixth position.

The Ducati Xerox Team can now enjoy two days of relaxation before returning to the track on Thursday to make final preparations before the first round of the World Superbike Championship kicks off on Friday.

Michel Fabrizio
"I'm satisfied with the lap times because we were consistently fast. I found good race pace with one of the tyre compounds in particular and this bodes well for the weekend but the result will very much depend on the weather. There are several fast guys here, so it will undoubtedly be a tough race weekend, as well as a hard-fought championship. It's a difficult challenge but I'm ready to face it."

Noriyuki Haga
"Today we concentrated on suspension settings, making various changes during the day, but for some reason I didn't find the same good feeling that I had yesterday. Having said that the lap times were fairly fast. With regard to tyres the difficulties are caused by temperature because an increase of just one or two degrees can make a difference. I can't really predict how the races will go on Sunday; I'm going to relax for two days and then we'll start work again on Friday."

Ernesto Marinelli - Team Manager
"We can be nothing but extremely satisfied with today's testing. The team and the riders have worked very hard and Michel in particular was very fast. The potential of the 1198 bikes is demonstrated by the fact that there are five Ducatis in the top six. The race weekend will nonetheless be a tough one but we have a good baseline from which to start."

OVERALL TIMES - Fabrizio (Ducati Xerox) 1m31.6s, Byrne (Ducati) 1m31.6s; Smrz (Ducati) 1m31.6s; Checa (Ducati) 1m31.9s; Rea (Honda) 1m32.1s; Haga (Ducati Xerox) 1m32.2s; Haslam (Suzuki) 1m32.2s; Biaggi (Aprilia)Â 1m32.4s...

SBK: TESTS END AT PHILLIP ISLAND

A violent downpour of rain at dawn and the grey skies predict yet another day of tests to be discarded, but then the asphalt dries just a few minutes after the beginning of the turn, aided also by the mild temperatures, enough to allow the riders to run immediately and with excellent times. Sun, wind and heat are the conditions for the conclusion of the In Front Tests which precede the Australian round, the first one of the 2010 season. Michel Fabrizio has the best time on his Ducati with 1'31"650. Eighth time for Biaggi with 1'32"474 at 0"824 behind his countryman. Max continued to work on developing his RSV4 in search of the best possible configuration to take on next weekend's races. Ninth for Leon Camier with 1'32"621 at 0"971 off Fabrizio's best time. The young English rider is growing compared to yesterday although it seems that he has still not found the right feeling with the difficult Australian track.

"I was hoping for better results - stated Biaggi - we are still having trouble on the disconnected asphalt where the bike doesn't behave as it should and it becomes difficult to tighten up on the berm. I'm not particularly happy, I was more confident, even the new tyres haven't given us any particular benefits. Now we will work toward the two races on Sunday, but it will certainly not be an easy competition".

"Today I was much better - Camier said - I felt more comfortable in Phillip Island's quick turns. We tried a lot of tyres and a lot of material, but we still need to improve the bike's configuration. There is still a lot of work to do before the race, partly on the bike, but a lot depends on me in that I still haven't learned the track well, I don't interpret it as well as I could and that means that I can't work efficiently".

**************
Programme:
A wet track, in the morning only, allowed for limited track time in the beginning of the first session.
With the tarmac drying up, both Ruben Xaus (ESP) and Troy Corser (AUS) completed a lot of laps
and made good progress with the set-up of the BMW S 1000 RR. Their respective crews
compared the different tyre compounds and worked on the chassis and suspension set-up.

Ruben Xaus:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR
Test kilometres today: 338 (76 laps)
Fastest lap free practice 1: 1:33.095 min / Fastest lap free practice 2: 1:32.714 min "I am quite satisfied with today's test. Especially our lap time in the afternoon makes me confident. The rideability of the bike has improved a lot. I have the feeling that we took the right decisions over the course of the test. My crew did a good job and I am confident that we can score quite good results during the race weekend."

Troy Corser:
Bike: BMW S 1000 RR
Test kilometres today: 249 (56 laps)
Fastest lap free practice 1: 1:32.819 min / Fastest lap free practice 2: 1:33.885 min
"We tested many things today. Some things felt well, some things not. For me, the bike still is a little nervous on bumps - both on acceleration and deceleration. In the afternoon we worked on making the bike more comfortable and controllable on bumps. We have got lots of information about many, many things. We now have to analyze the data and see what we can do. The fact that the bike is quite different to last year makes a proper comparison a little difficult."

What comes next:
While the team will stay at Phillip Island for the next couple of days, Troy will be at the official Infront Motor Sports pre-event press conference on Wednesday morning at Melbourne's Eureka Skydeck 88. It is the highest public vantage point in the Southern Hemisphere (300 metres in height) and the only observation deck in the world that can thrill visitors with 'The Edge', a glass cube which projects three metres out of the building.

Vermeulen Top Kawasaki Rider At Final Pre-Season Tests
Newsflash, 22 February 2010
Chris Vermeulen ended up only 1.220 seconds from the fastest rider after an official two-day test at Phillip Island, the last shakedowns before the 2010 season starts for real next weekend.
Vermeulen Top Kawasaki Rider At Final Pre-Season Tests

Tom Sykes was just a little behind his team-mate in testing, setting a 1'33.202 second lap compared to Vermeulen's 1'32.870, as both riders made valuable set-up improvements in readiness for the Phillip Island SBK races.

The highly competitive nature of World Superbike in 2010 was demonstrated by the fact that Chris was only 1.220 seconds from the lead, yet was ranked 16th, with Sykes 18th.

New suspension parts for the officially-entered Kawasaki Ninja ZX10R, plus many other smaller refinements, allowed both Chris and Tom to improve all through the tests. Each rider posted their best times in the very last session, despite high winds that were not present on the morning of the last day.

The extensive Kawasaki Racing Team winter test schedule has now been completed and the 2010 season gets underway at PI with first practice on 26th February, Superpole on Saturday 27th and two races on Sunday 28th.

Chris Vermeulen "We improved in every session around here, and it was good to be riding at a track I really knew. We tried out some new linkage and shock components and they really helped with weight transfer. Now we are at the stage of trying to dial the bike in and understand the different race tyres. We still have work to do on race weekend and the times were so close at this test. Another two-tenths and I would have moved up about six places."

Tom Sykes: "We tried a lot of things and went back to what we knew worked best. The team were very patient with me going through all the stuff that we had to try. It was very crucial that we did this, because we have a much better idea of where to go with set-up for the race next week. That is the most important thing, and this test was just to help us in the races. I feel we can close the gap a bit and I am looking forward to the races."

Today was the last day of two-day test session for Althea racing team at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia. A wet track was present in the Superbike morning sessions due to showers in the early morning. The asphalt had completely dried out by mid-morning so Checa and Byrne started their first session an hour later than scheduled. In today's first session both Althea team riders confirmed yesterday's excellent results. Byrne improved yesterday's best lap time scoring a remarkable 1,31,662 reaching the first position. Only few minutes before the end of the session Michel Fabrizio scored a better lap time (for only 12 hundredths) and so Shakey ended in second position. Checa followed his teammate in third place with a time of 1,32,195. During the last session, due strong winds, Althea team riders did not improve their lap time and in the combined results of the last two test days, Byrne came in second while Checa ended up in fourth position. The second day was mainly focused on extensive testing of the electronic settings. Both riders were able to continue working on what they had planned to do in addition to concentrating on testing tires in view of the first two races of the championship.

First session : 1) Fabrizio (Ducati) - 2) Byrne (Ducati) - 3) Checa (Ducati) - 4) Haga (Ducati) - Haslam (Suzuki) - 6) Smrz (Ducati)

Aggregate results : 1) Fabrizio (Ducati) - 2) Byrne (Ducati) - 3) Smrz (Ducati) - 4) Checa (Ducati) - 5) Rea (Honda) - 6) Haga (Ducati)

Carlos Checa :"I'm pretty satisfied with this second day of testing. This morning I worked hard with my technicians thinking about the subsequent races. In the afternoon, we tested some new components and I was not able to improve my best lap time also because to the strong wind. We used two types of tire, but for the race next week we'll also use some other different tires already tested by official riders. I'm happy because we almost terminated our planned work schedule and I'm feeling quiet confident for the next two races of the championship".

Shane Byrne :"In general, I'm very happy with this second day of testing even though unfortunately, this afternoon we had some small problems with the bike, and I was forced to use the second one. During the second session we lost time trying to fix the problems and I was able to run only few laps. The guys did a very good job this morning and I'm really satisfied with my first bike. I completed a very fast lap time in the first session, finding a very good pace. The only thing we can do now is rest and wait for the races next weekend".

Genesio Bevilacqua - General Manager :" We are quite pleased with the final results of these two test days. Both our riders were consistently fast, they worked very hard and the results speak for themselves. I want to thank all our technical staff for the great job done during these two days and also Ducati who put our team in the condition to reach these excellent results. Following these tests we now know we have a very competitive package and we're definitely looking forward to the season".

Jonathan Rea and Max Neukirchner have declared themselves ready for the opening of the 2010 World Superbike championship next weekend after completing a successful test at Phillip Island in Australia.
The Hannspree Ten Kate Honda pair spent two days preparing their Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade machines for the first of 13 rounds at the 4.45km circuit near Melbourne.

Rea, who topped the timing sheets in the last pre-season test at Portimao in Portugal heads into his second World Superbike championship year in buoyant form, having taken two wins in his debut season. The youngster from Northern Ireland, who celebrated his 23rd birthday earlier this month, set the fifth fastest time over the two days with a lap of 1'32.175s.

Neukirchner, meanwhile, has enjoyed his return to full fitness after an injury-plagued 2009. The 26-year-old German - already a World Superbike race winner - is looking forward to getting back to winning ways during 2010 with his new Hannspree Ten Kate Honda team.

Jonathan Rea - best time 1'32.175s

It's been a really good test and we've been able to work toward a good race setting for next weekend, which I'm really looking forward to. We've also been trying to get the bike to work as conservatively with the tyres as we can, but I was third quickest in this afternoon's final session, which isn't so bad. The main issue here has been me, and getting myself re-acquainted with this circuit - it's getting there, but it's taken the full two days and I'm still working on the last sector. There's still a lot of work to do, both for me and the team, but we've got a couple of days to relax and think about it, and we'll come back on Friday refreshed and ready to go.

Max Neukirchner - best time 1'32.691s

I have to admit that I was happier yesterday than I am today. There was some rain this morning and it was a bit windier, but the temperature was similar and grip levels were OK this morning. In the second session, I had a small crash; the bike wasn't too bad and I was OK, but there was not much time after that and, when I went out again, the grip level had dropped. We tested a lot of things today to try and find a good set-up for next weekend, but we didn't find it yet. Still we have some more things to try on Friday. I am feeling really fit and well - probably fitter than I have ever been - and I've enjoyed some surfing and training since arriving here in Australia. Everything is working well with my new team and it's good to be back on a Honda in this championship. I cannot wait now for the season to start - it's not long to go.

Ronald ten Kate - team manager

We've been working quite hard during these two days. Our base setting has been working pretty well at previous tests, but we've to change quite a bit to get the bike going properly here. On day one we went around in circles a bit, but we've made some more progress today. It's certainly not perfect, but we've still got next weekend to go after that. Tyre life has been not so bad and although we haven't quite got the maximum out of the softer tyre, we are getting more consistency at race pace.
