Japan's Yamaha Motor Co announced on Wednesday a net loss of about $US1.8 billion ($A1.99 billion) for the nine months to September due to sluggish motorcycle sales, a stronger yen and restructuring costs.

The company posted a net loss of Y158.76 billion ($A1.94 billion) for the first three quarters of 2009, against a year-earlier profit of Y43.15 billion ($A528.18 million).

It booked an operating loss of Y44.97 billion ($A550.46 million), against a profit of Y64.08 billion ($A784.38 million) in the same period of the previous year. Revenue plunged 33.1 per cent to Y858.51 billion ($A10.51 billion).

The bottom line was hit by a one-off loss of Y73.5 billion ($A899.69 million) due to restructuring costs such as asset impairment charges and early retirements.

Sales at Yamaha's mainstay motorcycle business dropped 26.6 per cent due to weak demand in Europe, the United States and Brazil, which offset solid sales in Asia, the company said.

For its full business year through December, Yamaha maintained its forecasts for a net loss of Y182 billion ($A2.23 billion), an operating loss of Y87 billion ($A1.06 billion) and revenue of Y1.1 trillion ($A13.46 billion).

Yamaha had been enjoying record sales until the economic crisis hit demand for its products, which also include boat engines and all-terrain vehicles.

Lol, far as I know, Rossi and Lorenzo have been keeping their part of the employment agreement with another world championship, seriously good racing up front (plenty time in front of the cameras), public relations at a level more than basic (count how many stunts you've seen form both). Yamaha's job is to capitalise on all this success and use the excitement and awareness to sell bikes of any sort.

Maybe it is the Piano side of the business letting them down. You don't see buskers with the old Yamaha anymore.

Yes but if Yamaha had promoted the pianos in the same way they promoted bikes and the benefits on global warming, the Iraqi's, Iranian's, Israeli's (couldn't think of too many countries starting with I) would have pianos instead of guns and would be making music instead of war.

Thus solving two problems, there massive losses and also the tyranny of wars.

I think that's why they recruited James Toseland. :piss2:

Well then it's their development department that's screwing up... pianos now need to be semi auto, with provisions for RPG, SAMs and light AA guns. They'd then sell more pianos.
