Guys, what do you run for street pressures, cold, with 120 front and 180 rear?

Yesterday to Wollomi I really found my bike skatey, not holding lines and generally just uneasy to ride. I adjusted my pressures to the factory recommendation of 42r/36f cold..

Im using Dunlop sportmax qualifiers..

Are my pressures a tad high? I cant work out why my bike felt like this and I think its the reason I was a fair bit off the pace.. It just didnt FEEL right.

The only OTHER reason is that i'm totally retarded on anything with 2 wheels :D

I use 36 front and rear on the road. 42psi i have always though to be way to much

seems a tad high, I would suggest though that you should also maybe look at your suspension settings.

Thanks gentleman, my suspension is stock but I've kinda gotten used to the lovely stiff settings on the track bike.. it holds a great line..

Perhaps, I need to drop my pressures a tad and add some stiffness to the suspension as well...

unfortunately the road is not the track and due to NSW state government will never be close! so therefore neither should your suspension settings.

your supposed to have a 190 rear not 180,that might be the problem??:confused1:

Keeping the front tyre off the ground at all times means you only have one tyre to worry about....

(hope this helps)..... :ayyy:..

Also suggest putting on the new Power Ones.... they are incredible hoops.... very very pleased.. Best handling the bikes been with these suckers on...

Kris
24-08-2009, 02:40 PM
haha woops Scott, 190! :D

oggy, thats what Im doing wrong. See I tend to ride with both wheels on the ground, unlike BigLunt :D

Might go see Zeno and drop my pressures. I think the Power One will be too soft as I commute with ze bike..

I run 33 front and 35 rear on my R1. But we do have colder temps in Canberra.

Try things in gradual increments such as pressures and suspension settings. I would say start on a 36 Front and 38 Rear with those Qualifiers

Suspension wise, track is a very different place to our roads being a lot bumpier as lilninja implied. The idea is to have the rubber on the surface all the time so rebound and compression should be adjusted accordingly. Baby steps

Yesterday to Wollomi I really found my bike skatey, not holding lines and generally just uneasy to ride.

mine was the same.. the road to wollombi is pretty damn bumpy. I set my compression to be softer but also need to change the rebound as well.

Next time i head out, i might change the compression and rebound back to stock settings, as I remember them being pretty good for that kind of road.

the track settings would have been a nightmare!

also, the 36, 42 pressures are probably max settings for rider plus passenger!

Too high Kris. Are you maybe referring to that bit of road that was really dusty/dirty? That certainly was slippery, but otherwise, regardless of pressures the speeds weren't high enough for the rear to slide ... unless you were really aggressive on exiting the turns ....

Kris
24-08-2009, 03:30 PM
Colin/Julian, yep i think ill lower the pressures. Im just going by the placard on the bike, but it mentions the same settings for rider or rider + pillion!

Ill drop the rear to 38

Julian, I recall that bit but I wasnt going hard so had no dramas with that particular section

I bet you all enjoyed the chook poo smell - I nearly vomited in my helmet :P

Kris, you got a good pressure gauge? that's the best place to start

Kris
24-08-2009, 03:32 PM
Kimbo, I most certainly do. I'm going to drop it to 38 tonight and see how I go for a few days...

the track settings would have been a nightmare!

I don't know why, but I prefer the track settings. The bike is sure-footed, sure it jumps around but it doesn't bounce and wobble all over the place.

I'm sure it's just me.

PS. My track settings are pretty 'hard', but not rock hard like a race bike.

No big deal. Casey does it all the time.

Anyhow, that's the smell of nature :ayyy:

Kris, sorry, just me again.

This in MY theory on it ... if someone sees fault in it, pls let us know :ayyy:

There's close to an optimum pressure, and that's the one we use on track. Yes it can differ a little, but so it may on the road and we don't really have the luxury of adjusting it constantly, so we need to find a 'near enough' point.

OK; on track we're looking for somewhere around 33-36? We get this by starting around 28-32 cold, and the corners do the rest. So ideally, we want 33-36 as an optimum pressure, and as they won't heat up enough on the road then I'd set it to that.
38 is still too high IMO (I've experimented). The problem is that there's that 42 stamped on the bike, so we're scared to venture too far away from it :D.

(I don't know how we compensate for the fact that the tyres aren't as hot ... ie not as sticky ... I guess by lowering the pressure a little further even? Probably best to just ride a little slower :ayyy:)

Kris
24-08-2009, 04:09 PM
Captain, ride a little slower? Are you feeling ill :D

I don't want to go too low because then that affects tyre life and ill be wearing out a large patch then a higher/more ideal pressure. Ill drop to 38 and try it, if its still being a pain, ill go a tad lower...

Captain

Captain, ride a little slower? Are you feeling ill :D
A little slower than on track, that is.

I don't want to go too low because then that affects tyre life and ill be wearing out a large patch
Please explain?

IMO what you want is maximum grip, not maximum tyre life. If that means maximising your contact patch, so be it.
Get a harder compund tyre if you want longer life :ayyy:

What did you run yesterday Captain?

On the road, in winter 34/38 and in summer I aim for 32/36.

Captain
24-08-2009, 04:36 PM
35/35 Belinda. Like I said, I've experimented and those pressures feel good to me.

Just curious. So many variables is there a magic number? I have never had over 38 (cold) in my rear tyre though.

I run 36/42 on Michelin PP 2CT's on the 05 Blade... with the recommended pressures, I always get 10,000kms out of a set... I try and adjust the suspension to iron out any handling irregularities (not that I am a suspender guru by any means)...

I've always thought that playing + or - psi on the tyres gets you into a mind jumble as tyres arent uniform... as they wear their characteristics change so you end up chasing a moving finish line (if your not careful).

But sometimes running a softer tyre pressure will accomodate the fact your suspension is set a bit too hard for the road, but with detrimental factors such as increased tyre wear...

How heavy are you Kris? I reckon 36/42 would be okay if you are a big heavy mofo, but not if you are lighter.

I really hope you get the tyre pressures right, cause fuck me, you got no clue when it comes to full on drag queens :lmao:

ITS got a bigger adams apple than I have, and that reach around ??? its tucking its cock between ITS arsecheeks :lmao:

ps, 34 f 36 r ;)

kris, just for shit and giggles.....

set your tyres to 38...

then take it down to 36...

BUT listen to the amount of air that comes out for a 2 psi difference it really is fark all....

dont go for tyre life, your not commuting in a car, you have two bits of tiny rubber touching the road maximum grip over life everytime

just like the Captain said.....

Oggy when where the Power Ones released, brought the CT2's a couple of weeks ago because the One's were not yet in stock.

I'm 105kgs as well, I run 34/36-38 Road and 31/30 (cold) on the track.
I check my pressures before every ride, nothing worst than a sloppy front end.

I have never had my rear tyre in the 40's !!!

your supposed to have a 190 rear not 180,that might be the problem??:confused1:

Wont make a difference.. Its the road not the track, its SFA contact patch difference.. If may feel like it turns in a little different (quicker)..

Kris - FWIW 36F 36R on the road has been my preference. I have never been in the 40's...

Set the rear to 38 last night, 36 on the front and played a bit this morning. Made a world of difference :) Ill do some more performance testing a bit later...
