Biker dead, another injured in Royal National Park carnage
BY MICHELLE HOCTOR
17/08/2009 8:35:00 AM
Police have urged motorcyclists to take care when travelling through the Royal National Park and along Lawrence Hargrave Dr following the death of one man and serious injury of another yesterday.
A motorcyclist aged in his 20s died after losing control of his bike and hitting a rock wall in the Royal National Park at 3pm.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Sir Bertram Stevens Dr, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five hours earlier, a 29-year-old motorcyclist from Campsie suffered neck and chest injuries when he collided head-on with a Ford Fairmont, driven by a 19-year-old Primbee man, at the entrance to the car park at Bald Hill Lookout.
The man was airlifted to St George Hospital by NSW Ambulance Rescue 26 helicopter suffering chest injuries, abdominal, pelvic and neck pain.
Immediately after the 10am accident, Wollongong Highway Patrol Sergeant Craig Price made a call for riders to travel within their ability before further injury was suffered. His words proved prophetic.
Both accidents are the latest in a series involving motorcyclists.
A male motorcyclist died in November 2007 after his bike collided with two cars on Lady Wakehurst Dr at Otford.
The man was riding with a group of friends in foggy conditions when his bike and a reversing car collided.
A female motorcyclist was left with critical head injuries in May after a crash in the Royal National Park, also on Sir Bertram Stevens Dr.
Two weeks later, a pillion passenger was thrown from a three-wheeled motorcycle on the F6, near the Helensburgh off-ramp.
Sgt Price said aside from the accident statistics, various complaints had been made by residents about noise and the driving speed of riders.
''The speed at which some of them are travelling is leaving no margin for error,'' he said.
''Whenever a motorcyclist comes in contact with the road, the injuries are more often than not serious.''
He said many riders were from out of the area and were unaccustomed to the driving conditions.
''Once they start to build up a speed, one minor error generally leads to an accident.''

Probably best to avoid the area. I'm sure that there will be extra police presence in the areas for a while

I am with Wetty , keep it for the track . Injuries are minimised by road conditions on the track , no gutters or rock walls and paramedics on hand incase of any incident . Lets not wipe ourselves out .

+1 for the track.
It seems that these reports are getting to be all too regular these days, a mate of mine bought a late model GSXR1000 and I was quite surprised at the amount of power it produces and its lack of weight, more suited to the track than the road for sure and can see how even experienced riders can get themselves into trouble on these bullets. (thought it did bring a smile to my face after a short ride)
If you have mates that are just starting out in motorcycling, encourage them to do some ridedays and when they get hooked as we all have they are less likely to go stupid on the road where the conditions are unpredictable.
Sure there are accidents on the track as my various broken bones can attest (the latest 2 ribs at Oran 10 days ago) but after 30years of riding and keeping the brave stuff to the track I am still able to get back on the bloody thing again and enjoy the thrill for another day.
Keep it safe brothers and sisters

damn two accidents on the same day. that place is going to be pig heaven for awhile.
yeah keep it to the track but accidents happen, i was riding behind a guy on a 250 and he was going at a moderate pace, not fast but within all the limits and everything. On the 35 kmph corners he dropped the bike due to hitting abit of debris. lucky there wasnt a car on the road, he wasnt hurt but the bike didnt look too good. All I'm saying is ride safe and try to be careful.

I must say, since starting to ride at the race track my riding skill has improved and the care i take riding on the road now compared to before has vastly increased.
I think of how i used to ride on the road, basicly leaving almost no margin for error at times and wonder what the hell was i thinking!
At a race track your spoilt with a whole track with no sticks, rocks, leaves, moss, potholes, wildlife oncoming traffic ect. so no worries but on the road any one of those things and more may lay in wait in the midle of the road at the next blind corner.
For risk V reward going really fast on the road is just not worth it.
Stay safe out there everyone!

Seriously, with the North patrolled heavily as always (Old Rd etc), now the South, and even North West with recent Putty Rd fatalities.. what's left? The track.
On Sunday Police had Strike Force Taipan - "Operation Zero Speed Tolerance"
Officers attached to Strike Force Taipan were out in force overnight targeting speeding offences and dangerous driver behaviour. Operation “Zero Speed Tolerance” focussed on main roads within the Sydney metropolitan area including the F3 Freeway, M2 Motorway, M4 Motorway, M5 Motorway, F5 Freeway, M7 Motorway and the Great Western Highway.
These campaigns will continue, even with Police strikes, and I am sure in the coming months our favourite roads will be heavily patrolled. My concern with these type of "Zero Tollerance" campaigns are the lengths they go to catch speeding riders.
On Sunday a H/Way patrol car did an illegal u-turn on a blind corner over double white lines near Sommersby, no lights, right in front of two of us. This was to chase some rider that was doing maybe doing 80 in a 60 zone. Seriously, how often are we seeing these types of reckless behaviours for minor infringements. TURN AROUND WHERE IT IS SAFE TO DO SO
Ride safe guys

Tracks are fun, but no comparison to a ride through the mountains or back roads.Just need to choose were you ride.
Nasho is dangerous road for many reasons as is Mac Pass, but we like to ride them anyway.Unfortunately some ride/drive to hard for their ability or the conditions and cause others to suffer from their mistakes.
The element of danger is there where ever you ride, so try to keep up your concentration and be wary on certain roads.

Back to the subject as I can't read Italian, One of the many Putty deaths was caused by a cop doing an unsafe u-turn to pursue a speeding rider. Other bike hit cop. Wonder what his excuse was. I didn't see him he must of being going too fast.

Don't know much more about that one, A Winsor rider told me about it when discussing the death toll on that road. It is a long fast run with no room for error. Heaps love the road but more than a few locals I know are a bit suss on that road. My experiance was a year or more back after a top run up on a Sat morn. Hanging off and giving the twin heaps I got half way through the tight stuff up the top and come to a fresh acco. Two bikes head on, One dead and the other squirming in pain. It freaked me a bit and there were heaps of people helping so I continued the Singo. On return the road was blocked and I went up front with all the other bikes while the bloke was air lifted out. That road demands respect. As do old R1 race bikes but that's another story

Sounds nasty!
There's a few left handers there, 35ers, that are very easy to run wide on and end up on the wrong side of the road. I rode the putty for the first time in December last year, and I thank Kat00 for wording me up while we were at the servo in McGraths Hill beforehand!
