Have CSS level 2 tomorrow and was curious what people thought of level 2? worth the money? what did you learn?
LEVEL II
It's easy to prove that target fixation is every rider's worst enemy and it has many forms. Training your eyes is the key to smooth, fast and confident riding. LEVEL II brings them into focus.
1. What is a reference point and how many do you need for each and every turn you ride?
2. What is the key to improving a riders understanding of their riding space and can you create and use more?
3. What do you do when you restrict your vision and how do you cure this?
4. What is the best way to use your eyes to the maximum and gain the most information with the least effort?
5. What signals the end of a corner? Can you change it or are you a lazy end-of-turn rider?
A rider's visual skills are the foundation of his riding. In other words, you are as good as your visual skills, no better. If you don't know where you are then it is very difficult to decide where you want to go and how to get there. LEVEL II addresses this vital aspect of riding. As always, one step at a time. Next time you ride; check out what your eyes are doing. How many times did you target fix on something?
1. Ride with cornering precision.
2. Have a choice of lines
3. Have more space in the corner. More space equals more time and flowing riding.
4. Cure target fixation.
5. Drive harder to the next turn, just because you can.
Vision is everything and after Level II you will know how it works and how to avoid and beat the pitfalls that you naturally have, beat the survival reactions that make you do the wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place.

I'll be there tomorrow doing level 1, might bump into you guys!
I liked it. One of the best drills was riding around the track slowly and learning how wide the track really is. Finding your own reference point and telling them to your instructor, he might give you some hints for few more. Also learning 3 step.
It's all about visualising the track and what you are supposed to do with your eyes at the track.
I think the levels could be summerised as:
Level 1 - what to do with your bike
Level 2 - what to do with your eyes
Level 3 - what to do with your body

I did level 2 about this time last year, the best thing was knowing what you are doing wrong and right. CSS gives you a systematic approach to your track day riding so you can identify why and where you are going wrong, and therefore a way to approach fixing it. Helps you fix bad habits but doesn't stop them.
At the end of the day vision is very important but it is your ability to process the information your visions gives you determines how fast you can go. A better way to explain it is panic/ stress is caused by not being able to process/ deal with the information you are being presented thus panic sets in or object fixation. Explains why I am not as fast as Stoner.

Mate, IMO level 2 is the most underappreciated level ... but the most important.
I loved it, and would recommend it for sure :ayyy:

Good summary. I was fortunate enough to have Terry (Racelogic) as my coach for level 2 and boy did I learn a lot (now I have to remember to do it:spank:)

I am looking forward to level 2 tomorrow aswell!
Level one today was awesome, I was hammering round the track a lot quicker than usual and it felt so easy, I didn't feel like I was pushing the limit anymore...

Well, level 2 was pretty good.. definitely worked on my visual skills and improved them. Now don't get so target fixated when going quick, or at least I know that it is starting to happen and can stop it getting any worse! 3 step and vanishing point opened up the track and found myself driving A LOT harder off the turns because i could see futher at the right time. At the end of the day I was riding around pretty quickly, but didn't feel like i was having to put in so much effort.
Have to say i would recommend it... you can read the books and know about it but for some reason an instructor telling you and pointing out the problems makes a big difference.
5. Drive harder to the next turn, just because you can.
This was so true.. i found myself driving out of the turn whilst sliding the rear just because i could, so much fun and can't wait for next track day!
I found after level 1 , riding, in general was easier.. I didnt think I was magically better but felt that instead of riding at 100% before, I was now riding at 75%... and maybe I was going quicker at 75% then at 100%? I hope so :D

had the same feeling as well. next track day and lap times will be interesting!

Yep, you'll be surprised.
The final drill of L1 gives the rider the impression that they have more time in the turns, which gives them the confidence to get on the gas earlier, building speed for longer through the turns which has a massive effect on laptimes. The flipside is that since the rider feels they have more time in the turns things 'feel' slower !!! It's a great drill, can't wait to hear your results at the next ride day.
Im going to the creek on the 29th, be interesting to see ;)

+1. The concept of vanishing points and the ability to start accelerating sooner and harder combined is a rush:mod_smilie_rockwoot

Yep, top L2 drill the VP one, if you think about it, nearly every L1 and L2 drill (and a few L3 drills) are based around being about to get back on the throttle sooner... after all.. the sooner you are on the throttle, the sooner the bike is stable.... and that choice is in the riders control... nice eh.

  ha ha AWESOME... that is exactly how I felt when I did that for the first time. Wait till your next TD and see what it's done for your T8 drive too. Well done!
Excellent stuff Devilish! That's exactly the feedback that I enjoy hearing, top stuff.
Ha haha Outofcontrol, a good 'bang for buck' alternative is to read the Twist of the Wrist 2 book, hammer that to give you key concepts, ride days don't give you the same cool environment for practising but you'll be making great progress none-the-less.

I've only recently got my hands on 'Twist of the Wrist 2', only had a brief look through it thus far but I must say what I've read is very interesting.
Looking at the CSS dates I think I'll book myself into the October school, how quickly do these fill up, should I be making the call soon?

Completed level one on Tuesday. Fun and learnt more in a day than 3 years of riding and reading TOTW books. Highly recommend to anyone thinking of doing it. Really works. It just all suddenly makes sense.
Looking forward to level two and next trackday.
