View Full Version : Nodding and Comraderie

Azza

Is it just me or do not as many people give a respectful 'nod' to fellow riders these days?

I started riding 5 years ago and i get brushed off alot more than i used to if i give a nod. Is it just me?

Seems theres not as much comraderie overall with riders these days.

What do you think?

There's respect here. You don't have to nod to get it, but you have to go to track instead :ayyy:

Just having a go at ya, those are the typical dicky topics one sees at netrider: "why don't people nod?" or " which glove do you put on last?"

But to show you there's no ill feeling ... with so many people riding these days, it's not a small, unique group any more; car drivers used to wave to one another in the 1920's too, Im told.

Azza don't take it personally, only that this question has been asked about a 1000 times in various threads on various forums before. The funny thing is those who are making jest here have most likely been the thread starter on other forums :stirthepot:.

In answer to your question - yes I believe the nod is losing it's power or rather there is lack of the nod compared to 5 or 6 years ago, this is not a bad thing only that as time goes by habits and trend change. There are more bike riders today then 5 years ago and also more groups of riders that have segregated themselves from the flock, so the nod goes with it. The nod will come back just a matter of time.

i my self am creeping up on being a senior rider have well over 20 yrs on road sorry to say the the general nod has been lost in translation from senior riders to junior riders and its a shame

do you know where the nod came from or what it symbolises ?

it comes from the knights of the old days where too knights in battle or in sporting arenas would tip or nod as a sigin of respect.this as i said has been lost in alot of ways with the younger riders of today but at no time is it being rude or disrespectfull they just havent been taught these things from senior riders

at no time am i trying to be a smart ass its just some info

I always nod when I see another rider (and I'm new to riding). Sometimes it's returned, sometimes not. Thus far I seem to get a wave every time someone overtakes me. lol

I agree with the explanation that as more people get in and start riding, the more "the nod" becomes diluted, and that's why it seems to be disappearing.

I had an Evo 8 back in 2005, of which only 200 were sold in Australia. So, as you can imagine, it was a novelty to see another one out on the road... so there would *always* be a wave. A bit later, Mitsubishi started selling unlimited quantities of the Evo 9 - so anyone and everyone could buy one. Pretty soon, no one would wave back... you'd only be met with a strange look.

Such is life... I keep nodding anyway. lol

I guess its subjective thing Azz. When you nod it does take the emphasis and the rider's attention off the rd and introduces other potential risks. Also gesticulating can be hazardous whilst riding as well. This may well outweigh the riders "protocol" of acknowledgement. I find it much easier, when riding just to raise my left thong - cloven foot onto my right shoulder (usually wearing a bonds singlet)and wink with my areshole - Its only polite:ayyy:

Yeah i dont think the nodding is something that will be around too much longer. There seems to be more and more dickheads on the rd with less education. Azza, when i first started riding I was happy to nod at everything on two wheels but as I gained confidence i had a realization that the rd requires so much attention that this is secondary - depending on the traffic situation. Some people are just flat out rude and some just a little more careful.

Azza, also you are forgetting that the people on this site know each other very well. After all, we have 45 min to kill in between our track sessions.

I don't nod and don't look for nods because I prefer to be paying attention to the road ahead of me. But I also chat to people at the traffic lights, that is if I can hear them over my exhaust.

It's just a :stirthepot: azza, Nuff said it best, we know one another and once you've met me you will take my words in a different way. But given that you don't know me, I take your comments on board.

In defense, typically newer members read through the many posts and get a feel for a forum, every forum has its' own culture (surely you have noticed some difference between RATs and Netrider?), and then you slide yourself in. No point going to a tits n arse forum and complaining there's too much sexism, for instance.

Also, note my first post:

I semi agree here mate, bullying is perhaps a strong way of putting it, but there certainly are some strong opinions on this forum, and those opinions aren't easily swayed most of the time. There also seems to be at times an overuse of the :stirthepot:, as if somehow that smilie makes it acceptable, or people feel the need to hide behind it sometimes, even though at times it is quite easy to see through the :stirthepot:.

My advice, hang around, take the opinions as what they are, cause that's what makes a forum great, along with the huge amount you can learn from a place like this, there are some very knowledgeable people on here who can help you to no end, regardless of what their general demeanor seems to be.

I myself don't do trackdays at the moment, and never have done one with rats, but I still find this forum a lot better than some of the others out there!

And as for the nod, sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but the general use of the nod has diminished immensely since I first started riding.

I know you were stirring. Stirring if fine, but i felt it went way beyond that here after the millionth response pushing the netrider button and berating someone for it, and turned into something of a pack mentality.

I dont have an issue with stirring at all. When it went well beyond that it became an issue.

And captain, i did meet you at OP when the last rats trackday was there. I came with my cousin Schtevo on this site. But only for like 5 mins as you were loading your bike back onto your ute.

If I may...

I have only been here for a short time, 10 months in fact, but I feel very strongly from participating in other forums as well as this one, that RATS is a definite cut above the others out there. People come to RATS and stay as they see that it is a collective of like-minded individuals that have some experience in riding motorcycles and the upkeep/maintenance of them, and something to contribute to others involved in our passion.

I realise your reception may have been harsh when you posed this question to the forum but can you blame the members here for wanting to be protective of their place in cyberspace and not wanting it to degenerate into something like NR?

I for one have enjoyed my time here immensely and have received some great help and information from the site. Very nearly everyone I have met through RATS have been top blokes/blokettes and I know my experience isn't unusual. Please don't take this thread to heart and stay in RATS, as there are so many good things to come out of this site and it would be a shame to assume this reception as customary...

I was going to say something earlier... but I feel the same way in regards to how this topic was treated - ie; steamrolling opinions over others.

Some of the comments in this thread made me feel uncomfortable about the prospect of attending an event run by RATS... like I might be set upon for not having the exact same opinions as everyone else.

I don't get the constant bagging out of NR either (which seems to be continuing on, btw). I'm a member there, and find it more relevant and helpful to me (as a learner rider) than this site... at least for the moment anyway. That might change when I can ride a bit better and feel like coming out to a track day.

A few of the guys there run a learner riding session every Sunday. I've attended twice so far, and I've met some great people and improved my riding skills already.

I'll share a policy from a company I used to work for, which I try to apply in my own life and think is relevant to a lot of the comments in here. This policy was in regard to speaking about our competitors. "Making someone else look bad isn't a good way to make yourself look better".

Maybe I just need to HTFU ;) lol

That's a good policy. I always like the policy of writing as I would if I was face-to-face with someone. A few people post comments on forums that if said face-to-face a punch-up would be likely.

Problem with forums and the written word is that emotions are not necessarily transparent so writers need to be mindfull of this and readers need to bear their perception of those words may be not entirely translated correctly.

I really like RATS. Minimal BS here and appears very like-minded bunch of bike nuts. A good laugh most of the time. Besides, who would pay attention to what Captain says anyway.. he rides a Honda! :ticketgrumblesmile:

I have only been riding for just over a year and a half and at first i started nodding as i thought that was what was done after seeing a bit of it on my 12yrs of driving on the roads , but very rarely did I get a nod back . I thought possibly it was my L and P plates and I hadn't yet gained the respect ? or something of licenced riders on the road but since getting my fulls nothing changed .
Maybe the state of our roads and some of the people that seem to get a drivers licence nowadays has changed it in the fact that you need to be watching even more closely what is going on ahead of you , you could look over to give a nod now and loose your front wheel into one of the massive potholes that we now seem to have more of .
Like Nuff said most will have a chat and say gday at lights but the focus seems to be watching what is ahead of you as opposed to watching out for nodding riders .
Since I started riding and going to the track I have found that riders are the most friendly group of like minded people i have ever been involved in with everyone always willing to lend a hand in any situation and expecting nothing for it . When my bike broke down on the old road one day almost everyone that came past pulled up to make sure that I was okay .
You may be missing the nod but needless to say there is still plenty of comraderie between riders , in my opinion , and I am glad to be a part of the biker community , RATS included as I have meet plenty of great guys in the short amount of time I have been here .

I had no idea that Rupertthemonkeyboy was such a slut.

Ive got to get out to a ride to witness this leg over head, and wink from the arsehole trick. Seen variations of which included a ping pong ball, but not winking, bloody hell:lmao:

Nup :p , How anyone can say this...

Some of the comments in this thread made me feel uncomfortable about the prospect of attending an event run by RATS... like I might be set upon for not having the exact same opinions as everyone else.

after having read this

I find it much easier, when riding just to raise my left thong - cloven foot onto my right shoulder (usually wearing a bonds singlet)and wink with my areshole - Its only polite:ayyy:

I'm not a member of netrider but I've been with RATS for a little while now and I can't say that I've found a better bunch of guys :D

If anyone one of these guys was stuck for something there's always another RAT who's willing to help. Whether it's riding 2 hrs home to pick up the trailer and driving back or just helping someone learn thier way around a track these guys are awesome.

RATs probably isn't as relevant to you as it was to me because when I started there were a few of us learners and particularly Kat00 and Vinnie organised L's friendly rides around the place to encourage us :baby:

I've got one that'll be learner friendly on sunday here (http://nswroadandtrackbikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11939), come along and we'll make sure nobody is left behind.

It takes a while to get the mood of a new forum, my first post on RATS was within 5 minutes of signing up, luckily I was posting a group ride along what I now know is the ever popular "old road", but I know how easy it is to bring the "culture" of another forum across and expect them all to be the same. Netrider (IMO) seems to be a bit too much like what's wrong with modern society, nobody says what they're thinking because they don't want to offend anyone. Here, if someone says something a bit daft, they're fair game. It'll be brought up in the pits, at the cafe and on these forums for weeks or months, its just friendly ribbing, and the better you know someone, the more likely they are to hang shit on you :D :lmao:

Maybe just sit back for a week and read other threads and settle in a bit. Then feel free to post up any learner questions you have, we've all been there, we've all forgotten the fuel tap, side stand, had our first stack or forgotten it's in gear at the lights :( :ayyy:

I nod to anything on two wheels (or three, I saw one of those Piaggio things yesterday ;)) unless I'm concentrating on not dying, and my shlong goes to the right, except when I've got the missus on the back. coz everytime I brake she slides forward and it gets caught between my rocks and a hard place :(

I will get on one of the rides shortly. I dont have an issue with the guys personally at all, this was the only thread that i felt the need to respond in the way i did but other than that nil problems here. Only help received.

Wow, another forum I'm on bagging Netrider!

If you've got thousands of members on a forum who are mainly beginners, then seriously, how smart would you have to be to guess that the nod, safety gear, should I get a litre bike after my L's, etc, etc type of questions will come up with high frequency? Surely it's not genius stuff to work out that out? As this forum grows it'll happen here too - so htfu is right.

Sheeeesh :dohsmiley::dohsmiley::dohsmiley::dohsmiley:

I nod by the way. Don't care if I don't get a response because I'm usually in a good mood when I'm on my bike.

Oh sorry, I forgot the :stirthepot:
