I have been looking around for a One Piece Leather Race Suit (I'm a big bloke and currently wear XXL in an Ixon Two Piece) I have tried a number of suits which go up to Size 60 XXL.

I had almost thought that I might have to go the custom make route (I have been following veitch5926 posts about the subject) on the off chance I tried a Berik size 60....bugger still to small. The guy at the shop who happends to be a racer suggested a brand new make "Madif" distributed by the company that own Berik and Arlen Ness. They also make suits in sizes XXXL 62 and XXXXL 64.

I brought it, best of all it's priced under $900 and appears to be made of the same leather as the Berik Suits (it's basically a budget Berik suit).

I am a great believer in the adage "you get what you pay for" but this just might be a suit that is "alotta bang for your buck" I guess time will tell, might even give it it's virgin run this Sunday at EC.

Just don't lose site of the fact leather comes from cows so except for thickness it is the same stuff even on a budget suit. What is a problem is how the suit is made with the overlapping layers, stitching & armor. There is no point at all buying leathers because of the WORD leather thinking your protected it all comes down to how much you think your worth because the protection is for yourself.

Very valid point, checked the stitching, armor etc, what is does not have is the external titanium armor, that is making an appearance on shoulder and elbow points these days, these don't grab the surface in an "Off" and promote a slide rather than a role.

My budget was $1,500, but those suits simply did not come in a size to fit.

The reason the top brands cost more is very simple R@D to make there suits as safe as humanly possible, before buying a no name budget suit ask yourself how much R@D went into making it.

Things like external titanium armor are there for the mega dollar race suits but the most important thing is the way the suit is put together, there is no point having great armor & top quality leather if they rip apart at the stitching.

teknik, spyke and berik suits are all great examples for those on a budget, presuming you fit them!

The problem is, can us normal guys tell what it is that makes one suit good, and another not so?
Like zRoYz said, the better suits have had a fair bit of R&D, so there's more to it than just double stiching (which i probably wouldn't recognise anyhow).

can I say one major difference betveen stitching, I noticed some companies are using cotton thread to stitch leather :lmao::lmao::lmao:

Joe Rocket is example. (not all of JR) :confused1:

There is a special thread for leather but 10 times more expencive :ayyy:

Be careful when buying a bargain, must be a good reason for it :confused1:

Any others to be aware of Irena? it would be good to know for those buying.
Is it only the cheaper Joe Rocket stuff that uses cotton?

Honestly, that stitching was the only unsafe thing i came across to.........

I always believed, you get what you pay for :confused1:

Which shop mate ?

Didn't want to appear overt about the retailer, but Bikebiz Parramatta (the product is so new to them that it's not on their website as yet)
Hoffy, I guess you could say it's in the neighbourhood, not too far from Baulko

It doesn't take much to be too big for the main brands. The only brand that I can fit into a 60 (50 US) is Joe Rocket and not many brands make anything bigger than a 60. After my Joe Rocket suit blew apart at the seams I don't have much faith in the replacement set they gave me and would like a one piece for the track. I'm curious to know what people here think of Collins leathers too.

Irena, I lost the link you gave me to check out for leathers. Any chance of getting it again?

I thought I would give an update, one of the reason's I joined RATS was to utilize the intellectual property of other members. In this case zRoYz made a very valid point (I want a breathable summer suit, that if I come off will afford me the protection I need). This morning I changed my mind and upgraded to a Berik two piece race suit in a size 62 XXXL. It cost me $400 more after my VIP Member discount. I tried it out on a road run this arvo, am I happy?.........Very, the particular usage of this suit will be TD's and I believe I have made the right decision. Thanks for your input zRoYz. :ayyy:
