View Full Version : Thinking of turning my Hayabusa into a track bike...

pan
26-05-2009, 11:33 PM
Been thinking of it for a while, and though I keep adding bling, I've been thinking of selling off all my bling bling and making it as light as possible for the track.

I like riding it every day and have done so for the last 5 years, but I also love my car (Impreza WRX), so I'm very tempted to "create" a Hayabusa track bike... rather than get a 400 or 600 trackie like many others do...

Anyone made a Busa track bike or seen one?

There used to be a couple of black Kiwi race ones. They had trouble getting them around corners without scraping everything & used to side them around corners.

Yeh, won't be the quickest track bike ever, but I love it and I really don't want to buy another 400 or 600... been done too many times...

Let me know if you find out more about those Kiwi bikes! :ayyy:

Know a member here ( not active anymore though) who rode a busa at the track, ground down his engine casings in turn 9, so was no slouch by any means , then got a K6 1k gix, and wasnt the rider he was on the bus, may of changed now and has got his mojo back, not sure, havent seen him for a year, but he rode that busa very well.
Point is, its what your comfortable on, so think about it and do what pleases you.

But, from someone who also rode daily rain hail or shine for years except when spat off and in pain ( was a regular thing, pain is my friend now), and now not ridden in 6 months, it kills you and nothing can make up for it but rd riding..
Think hard about it mate.

Straight up I think some people really need to ask themselves why they ride there bike of choice........bingo because it's the bike that floats your boat. Instead of the you should get this or that bike maybe more input into what Pan should do to his bike of choice to transform it into his track bike of choice.

Seeing there is f$%k all posts yet in this thread with info to help him do what he wishes I'll start:

The first objective would be to decrease weight as much as possible & you can start with the simple things & then progress to the $$ options.
Remove any standard part not needed at track like lights, center stand, extra guards & filler panels not needed.

Things that will start costing $$:
Source fiberglass panels to replace OEM if none aval research what is aval than maybe adapted or even approach a fiberglasser to see if some can be made using your OEM as molds.
Cut down sub frame (forget your model busa) but the early models had an alloy sub frame that did crack so replaced with steel but for track the alloy would be fine as your never going to pillion.
Titanium parts like exhaust, bolts, etc.
Forged wheels but carbon fiber would even be better.
Brake upgrade, fitting a bremo master cylinder or the like & race pads at the very least as busa's are known for brake fade (I'm sure you already have braided lines).
Suspension as ground clearance will be a problem which is why decreasing sprung weight & having suspension suited for track use would be a must.
Engine casing protection due to with enough lean angle on a busa you can scrap them.
Dash removal & replaced with light all in one digital dash, you really only need rpm.
Aftermarket clipons, rearsets any part you can make lighter will help.

More or less it all depends how far you wish to go making the ultimate busa track bike but in the end if just punting it around in standard form is enough to float your boat then simply enjoy. I used a VFR750 for awhile as a track bike & it was probably the most fun I had on the track & it does give you more satisfaction when you overtake the sports bikes because in the end it's the rider not the bike.

sub frame: min's a 99 model. Already got the light one :ayyy:
Titanium exhaust, Already got one :ayyy:

Bremo master cylinder, YES! WANT ONE!

Dash removal & replaced with light all in one digital dash, you really only need rpm. NO! I WANT TO BE ABLE TO SHOW PEOPLE IN THE PITS THAT IT SAYS 340 on the dash! :lmao:

At RATs EC track day in Dec last year there was an 08 blue one punting around. Looked like a 4 into 1 with the rego gear removed (blinkers and plate definitely, not sure about the lights).

He was in the fast group and I'm confident he must've been in the 40's. Not a litre bike but I was definitely impressed.....and he seemed to be having a good time.

Brakes upgrage would be good but I reckon that the trick is that you need a suspension maestro to give you some advise (lift or lower/harden or soften/etc ?).

Good luck!

Hi ya' Pan, after reading this thread, the only sound advice has come from zROY & Dean93 !.
The 'Busa would make a very good track bike, a bit of a handful at places like Wakefield or Broadford but a shit load of fun. A 'Busa in the right hands on any track would be fast just the tight corners (say under 55kph, eg only) would slow u down. As u know I am building a 'Busa powered race bike and I have campaigned various 'Busa's at several track day's. Yes, they do suffer from poor brakes, the suspension, especially the front, as a base, is good. The rear shock is ok , especially if we shed a few kilo's off the bike. U are on a good thing that is different from the norm, go for it. I would be only to happy to turn the spanners for free to convert ur 'Busa into a track day weapon so u can surprise all the knockers who have never thrown a leg over one!.
I will give u a call soon & discuss!:ayyy:

Cheers,
Tex & Bundy

Great idea pan. I bike you know and love. Track it out and theres 1/2 the KG's goooorn already. I think your on a winner that'll make plenty of peaple shit brickes when you put the heat on them in the faster corners & do the fly bys on them down the strights.

After a year of Busa ownership I understand where you are coming from :ayyy: I'll be punting the Bus around Oran Park on the 7th, and the its getting braided lines and BT-003s next week. Its no 600, but still a lot of fun.
