Had no real issues in nearly 3 years, had 2 recalls nothing major.
Graham from Clubmans knows them backwards and we had 4 on the rental fleet for several years.
Best all round bike for OZ...
Great off road as well you will surprise yourself how easy they are to ride in the bush.

I haven't ridden one myself but some good mates have them & can't spk highly enough about them & since owning them don't stop going off road. One lives QLD & his bike before was a VFR which he loved & there known for reliability & not once has he said a bad word about his GS since changing.

Go to www.advrider.com and there's more info than you can shake a stick at! go into "Regional Forums" then "Australia" for local stuff, I even suspect you'll find zRoYz's mate in there (Peka?) although according to his profile it's the 1100 not the 1200 model, and let me be the first to say it .... check out the KTM990Adv as well :ayyy:
ooh! KTM are doing a runout of the 990 Adventures! $20k + ORC http://www.ktm.com.au/bike.php?bike=130

Good luck finding a 08 990 adventure!!! I can't even get enough 09's!!!
I have spent alot of time on the R1200GS and the R1200GS ADventure. Awesome bikes. They handle very well, enough to take one to eastern creek and have a go. They tip into corners really easily, and you don't have to work your arse off to tip them in.
Longer trips is what they are built for. Rediculously comfortable (being 6''8'), whack it in top gear and just cruise, lots of torque and an engine that has proven itself by owners getting 300,000 to 400,000km's before having problems...
Just an awesome motorcycle!
Not the 990 Adventures are a good thing too, only problem is that there is fark all of them around, KTM havent brought many in this year....
I know who you're talking about Roy and yeah he thinks they're the duck's guts. Another bloke I know is in an old farts BM club and when he got the GS found that the beak tended to catch the wind so he sawed it off and was much happier.
I wouldn't mind giving one a flog as it's a heavy boat that's touted as a road and offroad bike that gets praise from everyone that rides it... talk about an anomaly!

Did eight nights around Tassie on one in Decemeber. Great bike and heated handle grips are a god send! Really comfortable and surprisingly agile for a large bike through the twisties! Pretty heavy though (as you'd already know) and tends to blow around a bit with the pannias on, much like any bike.
Also did three nights around south-east Tassie back in October on the GS650 (800 Twin), awesome bike for fanging through twisties and would be better suited if you're a smaller bloke like myself (5'10"), than the 1200.
KLR 650 is also an alternative if luxury isn't high on your list. Pretty much Freddy Flintstone in terms of maintaining in the field and cheap. I know a couple of blokes who've circumnavigated the continent on them and love 'em!
www.motoadventure.com.au hires the BMW's out of Hobart. Immaculatly maintained fleet of bikes and a good bloke (Ian) who runs it.

That reminds me, there's a bloke on the ADVrider site (Stevered) who hires out the 1200GS and the 800cc twin (650GS :confused1: ) I can't remember if he's in Syd or Newcastle  if you wanna take them for a decent test ride!

A mate has the 990 KTM he loves it, he gives it a bit of a hiding in the bush and keeps up with sports bikes on the road.
