View Full Version : Break in Dyno

Does anyone recall the name of the mob that did motorcycle break-ins on dynos? I recall seeing some video on youtube of some bloke that was running in a 848 I think....

Anyway, the more I read about the 08 CBR's and their oil/piston ring issue the more I think I might get the bike of choice shipped to the dyno and broken in there rather than me riding it straight up.. They say the first 30kms are the most important!

i went this route
worth the money... probably not so much
its just easier as you dont have to wait 1000kms hehe

Valid it sure is..

I meant here we go with the great run in debate, run it in hard, no numptie it in, no hard, according to book, no hard, numptie it in :lmao:

I expect to see atleast 5 pages of that shit, just worded differently :lmao:

edit. Kris, to be of some use other than take the piss. mototuneusa.com, site from memory, so play around with that if not correct.

I'm a firm believer in give it stick straight up... that said, its a new bike and its a thou, giving it stick for a new rider to a litre is nothing something I feel comfortable with.

This isn't to be a debate as to its usefulness, more just some info on where I can get it done in Sydney.

But... Now im reading about CHRONIC oil consumption issues on the 08 Blades and a whole bloody clutch recall...

Am I mad for considering a blade? Needless to say, Ive contacted the dealer and dont want a bike in the Clutch recall VIN range nor a bike that burns oil. Ill overlook the blade if this is the case..

Johnny: thanks, got that link already. I just recall a youtube video of a Aussie mob breaking a bike in...with dyno charts proving its usefulness.

Great move on doing the dyno, but if theres ANY chance of getting something other than an 08 Blade, I'd jump at that..one guy in NZ has had two 'new' blades due to oil and the third is starting to show the same prob!!!! and I'm an avid Blade lover/owner. (05 model)

Kris
21-05-2009, 11:49 AM
jason, I'm starting to think the same way. Oil issues, clutch issues.. engine rebuilds? yeah no thanks.

Or, I say to my dealer on the contract if its got oil issues then I want the gixxer - I wont settle for a rebuilt engine in the first 5000kms.

As you're an avid lover, tell me straight up why you'd avoid one?

This the case with the 09 stock too ? one wouldve thought that they wouldve ironed this prob out considering theyve had a couple yrs ?

Kris
21-05-2009, 11:54 AM
Johnny, I searched fireblades.org and I cant find any 09 users reporting the issue. That said, a 09 isn't a option for me as they want too much coin.

I'd be happy to take a 08 Blade if they stated a bike replacement if the issue arises.

Bit worrying huh!? Theres oil debates, ring debates, rehoning cylinders - ugh! Heart surgery don't sound nice..

Kris, go for peice of mind mate, if you have these concerns now, it would always be in the back of your mind..

p,s, I know a couple a guys who are recommending SCM @ L/C, but, dont let them/him fool you with the same line he has been using for yrs, literally, "this is the lowest price I can do, and only on the condition if you promise to bring it back here for servicing, as thats where we make money from it, not on the sale", its a load of shit mate, any price you get from there can be bettered by a minumum $2k elsewhere.. Wouldnt let them walk around my bike let alone service it either..

I hear ya... Best price is was/is $17,500 ride away. I think thats fairly good. I told him I'm spent loads of money on gear with them and a mate wants a GS500 so if he can't better the price which he claims he cant then I want a few freebies (Fender elim) or at least discounts of them or other gear.

Finance is all done for a figure, its just a case of finding the bike etc...

Im sure they'll sharpen it a bit more before I sign on the dotted line.

Johnny

$16500 ride away or walk mate !

Kris
21-05-2009, 12:15 PM
hahaha

Well, I have the clutch/oil issues up my sleeve if I do indeed love the ride of the CBR.

The paperwork I signed says 'deposit fully refundable' so basically if im not happy with anything I can walk away with my $500 back...

Its getting close to the end of the month too :D

back to running in on a dyno. how much wood it cost. 1000kms on a dyno will take 7hrs? dyno time is approx $200 an hr? trev?

Kris
21-05-2009, 12:17 PM
I was told 200kms is more than enough for the initial break in, anything after that is just getting the bike up to service interval?

$16500 ride away or walk mate !

In 3 years the blade's resale value will drop to $12k if you are lucky, & the 09 Gixer will still pull 13k resale easy.....

As you're an avid lover, tell me straight up why you'd avoid one?
Inside the engine is my weakness, mechanically... I'm useless there... so any problem that I can't fix or understand (Honda aren't helping anyone understand why either!) worrys me.. the fact Honda are treating each case on an individual basis makes me think theres a chance I'd get stuck with the problem.
I'd buy a new bike only if it was going to be pretty close to hassle free... I dont to pay new bike $$$ knowing theres a decent chance of a problem... no matter how bloody good the machine is meant to be.

09's are apparently sorted... were in the mid part of 2009, why are there 08's on the floor and why the discount? cause no-one else wants that risk, doesnt matter the build date sicne the risk is there. I'd suggest the same $ figure and tell him if he can't do the 09 for that same price then you're truely not interested.
08 is a gamble and I wont gamble new bike $$ for a potential lemon.

Col

with all these oil problems, if you do go with the blade and decide to do the dyno break in make sure your Stealership doesnt know about it.

also if you need to take it back i would put mineral oil back in there too or they might bitch about it.

Sounds like common sense to me. Really, is a dealership going to sell me a 09 for $17,500 ride away? I'm doubting it. You're right, Im going to pitch it to them. I don't want a lemon. Not for a brand new machine

The Blades are a different kettle of fish re break in really as they are running forged pistons aren't they? I would usually recommend running the bike in on teh dyno that Mototune way BUT not for the blade and prolly not for the -8-09 R6 either as they are having some probs (not the same as the Blade) with engines if you don't get enough gentle time on some of the parts before crankin them up.

IN general, the running in takes about 20min-1/2 hour, that's it...... the moto tune method, I am available to do it if anyone wants it done, I do it exactly the same way, BUT again, I prolly wouldn't do it with these new Blades.........they need to be run in more like you used to before, not keeping a constant speed, on and off the throttle and easy to start with and gradually increasing where you rev it to after every 100 or so km.....so that by the time you get to the 1000km mark, you're getting toward red line. But thats me

Hope this helps.

Forged? I don't know, Nikasil coated bores, yes... would that make a difference?

EDIT: Yep, they're def forged Aluminium... why does that make it bad to dyno?

Kris, if you decide to go that way you could do what I did. Book a track day and take your new bike there. That way you kill 2 birds with 1 stone, you brake the bike in and you get used to the power, if the bike has too much power initially all you have to do is be in a higher gear.

Kris
21-05-2009, 01:05 PM
Thanks birdman, seems ill just do normal road riding/stop start/vary etc

I've done 2,000kms on mine now (August 08 build) and no excess oil consumption - they use some Honda branded Mineral oil now and I have checked mine often and no real oil use :ayyy:

Mine was also outside the clutch recall VIN range - so they didn't change my clutch at the 1st service

You're a lucky man James :)

I read of guys even having the piston ring procedure done and still burning oil

If i wanted a oil burner, I'd buy a VW Diesel :dancesmiley:

Not on most new sports bikes Paul. 20min to seat the valves right and you're done. Have you seen the Moto tune site and the how's and why's?

Not for this bike, (new blade) but in general.

Hi Kris,

sorry, long post.

Birdman is correct. So is running in on the racetrack. That way you run in the most important part, YOU.
The fastest, cleanest and best rider I know (sub 1:40 on street tyres, on the first time ever at EC, he is really just a road rider, never does TD's), has had R1, zx10, gixxer thou, etc but his current ride is a late model GSXR750 and he really likes it, he does say he'd like a bit more power but this guy is an awesome rider. Suzuki is arguably down on quality but my K5 still looks very fresh and feels like new after about 40,000k of TD's, dirt roads and long trips. No commuting and always garaged though. I like the 1000's for the V8 like grunt, you can be so lazy if you want or wick it up and leave long black lines out of most any turn at will. But I think a 750 would be the perfect track bike and nearly the perfect road bike. Enjoy, I'm jealous.

Kris
21-05-2009, 03:24 PM
Thanks Robbo, well I went to test ride the GSXR750 today but it had been sold so I'm going over to Kograh and will report the findings :)

Everything I read says pretty much what you've stated, the 750 is a great all rounder and very capable! More than enough for a noob like me ;)

The blade debate can go on forever just like any problems any model tends to have it's nothing new. From all I read only very early release blades are to be concerned about & those build dates would start in 07 if you look at compliance plate as that's how the models run. Compliance plate will have 07 build date but rego will say 08 variant. I don't read to much about late 08 or 09 blades burning oil & you do need to remember there are 1000's of these sold & the general public all treats them differently. No manufacturer can factor in for idiots who jump on the band wagon because they think something is wrong because they read it or there mate told them.

My blade is mid year build 08 & doesn't burn oil, but my 04 with 7000kms on the speedo did (not a great deal). My VFR doesn't burn oil at all that I can notice level wise.

Just wait for more reports of R6 failures that will be the next bike the band wagon will start on as there having valve train failures.

GSXR I will never buy simply because I don't trust there frames & I include the 750, I don't need to talk shit just ring a frame straightener & ask if they have had to fix frames on the 750 just because it hit a big pot hole of jumped a gutter, I'm only talking a few mm out but on a sports bike that is allot.

Kris
21-05-2009, 04:29 PM
Thanks for the input Roy! I think I'd be a very happy camper on a non oil burner CBR1k ;)

Is resale on the Zuks as bad as they say comparing that to a Honda?

zRoYz
21-05-2009, 05:04 PM
Resale is another very grey area & will start great debate, Honda normally have good resale mainly due to build quality but in recent years all the manufacturers have lifted there game so build quality isn't so much of an issue anymore. I don't really think any bike these days is great for resale unless vintage because everybody discounts run out models & even Harley & Duc have started doing it when in the past they frowned on it.

Resale is a mute point simply because with anything it can be worth X amount but without a buyer willing to pay X amount it is worth nothing. My own opinion is out of the main players Triumph, Kawa, Suzuki are probably bottom of resale valve then you have Yamaha, Honda, Duc, BMW the rest I don't rate due to either exotic or lumps of metal. The GSXR750 is an exception to above for one main reason it is the only 750 sports bike aval so tends to hold a decent value due to demand for something with more grunt than a 600 but not a 1000.

if you dont wanna be hit by depreciation and worry about resale value either dont sell the bike ever or buy 2nd hand
bargains to be had out there in times like these.

There's a better way, don't buy a bike or a car. Leave it in your savings account and it will not depreciate (much).
