Yep. F1 possibly uses super capacitors which charge up and discharge much quicker than batteries

I know they make sense but I dread the day if these things ever become the norm..
Bikes without soul!
I honestly dont think I want to ride a bike that doesnt have a living breathing internal combustion engine!

why not, so what if they are slightly slower, you could still have a shit load of fun racing them and um theres something else...uuuumm...
oH yeah the environment.
Ive already engineered one last year with a frame starting from scratch using MotoGP geometry and a 120Nm PMAC brushless motor weighing 14kg. 120v 40Ah worth of lithium. whole thing weighes 140kg and 4.5kWh. Bit like a 600.
Double disc on the front and regen braking for rear wheel.
There's a tidbit about the TTX race at Isle of Man in July issue of UK Superbike magazine. If anyone wants a copy PM me. I don't know if I should post it up here or not :D

This is the first 3D model I made of the Ripperton Electric SuperBike late last year. It was a bit naive to say the least. Too many motors not enough batteries. With IC engines you dont muck around much with fuel, its all in the engine but with EV's 80% of the performance is in the fuel ie how much battery can you pack in there. The rest is controller and motor. Theres a whole new encyclopedia of design philosophy to be learnt about electric motorcycles.
The model Im currently working on is much different to this. The black things are the BMI cells that Im using in the CBR. Im hell bent on AC brushless motors and may go belt or hydraulic drive

Doubt it
capacitor systems are very bulky and not suited to bikes
great for buses and cars.
Regen on bikes would only be good for rear wheel.
Track bike would still have friction brake up front and regen only on rear.
In traffic you would use rear brake only.

That looks good. Most people probably wouldn't pick it straight away.
Clever use of the petrol cap too.
Yeah it looks good but theres multiple design fails on that thing.
The outrigger motors have no crash barriers and those little black plastic caps are the only thing saving the brushes from being wiped out on the ground if you stack it. Brushes are stupid expensive on those motors.
Ive got an even better use for the gas cap..as a garbage bin liner.
ffs they still have the rubber seal to stop fuel leaking
So yeah, charging your car off a power point is actually spilling tons of burnt coal into the atmosphere, so it's not (yet) a good solution to [what I believe is a non-existent] problem. (Dissenting "climate change" - formerly "global warming" - *cough* is for another discussion. :rules:)
But it'll break the oil oligopoly and give consumers choice so in that respect it's sweet.
The racer making a point of saying, "It won't replace petrol. It will just supplement it." That's what Californians said about 2Ts? :spank:

Hmmm, all the bikes still have chain drive?
I would have thought someone would come up with something along the lines of those mag-lev trains. You could have a cluster of rare earth magnets integrated into your rims, activate electro magnets inside the wheel hub to drive the thing. You'd end up with a true, all wheel drive bike. Or at the very least, you could make the rear wheel mag-lev driven...
Has anyone seen how much weight an electro magnet driven by just 1 D size battery can lift? Almost a tonne. There's that famous mythbusters episode where the guys try and find out just how much it can lift, and they almost manage to get the mini off the ground with an electromagnet powered by one D cell.
Obviously you'd require sophisticated intelligence to co-ordinate the thing, it would need a hell of a lot of computing intelligence behind it but it could be done. And it would use hardly any juice, in fact you could probably run it's electromagnets on 5KG of mobile phone batteries for quite a considerable amount of time.
But, quite frankly, nothing beats that roar I know and love. I don't see how anything will ever replace the sound of full-throttle exhaust ports howling their wrath down one's favored manufacturers' pipe of choice. It truly is a beautiful thing :)

havin owned a brushless hub pushy .. one noticble difference when trying to get more power out of these motors the hub size increase's and so to would the gyroscopic effect makin it hard to turn at high speed due to the size of the magnets and hub ... my thinking is a standard hub with a counter rotating weight trying to reverse these effects ...
RIPPERTON
29-11-2009, 09:27 PM
Woo.....gettin a bit too scientific there Jase
High performance handling and hub motors dont go together.
Hub motors and commuter bikes are a perfect match cause you dont demand too much in the way of handling from a traffic bike but you get the advantage of having just one moving part, the wheel.
A track bike on the other hand would have an on board motor as would an MX bike cause the wheels obviously need to be light.

This is especially for the knee jerkers that think there is an argument in how much CO2 electric power stations produce.
Generally, even in a worst case scenario (coal fired) EV's produce 1 third the CO2 that ICE cars make.
