Do not know the exact circumstances but:

Regis Laconi has been seriously injured in a crash at Kyalami. The Frenchman, riding for the DFX Corse team, had just taken to the track when he crashed in a fast left hander, suffering injuries to his head and torso. It was immediately clear that Laconi was badly hurt, and after the medics had stabilized his condition, he was taken first to the trackside medical center, where it was decided to fly him to the nearby Sunninghill Hospital in Sandton for further examination.

At the hospital, they found suspected fractures in 5 vertebrae, fortunately without any damage to the spinal cord, and a CAT scan showed a severe cranial trauma, though it appears that were no neurological complications. Regis Laconi was moving his limbs, and is currently being kept in a clinically induced coma, and for this reason he has been placed on the danger list. He is due to be operated on early this evening to have two plates inserted to support his cracked vertebrae.

In a press release, the team wished him a speedy recovery, to which we add our own best wishes. Laconi had started the season very strongly, taking three fourth places at Phillip Island and Valencia, and looked capable of improvement. Hopefully, he will be back riding soon.

There are later unconfirmed reports that the head injurt suffered may be more serious than initially thought but again, these are unconfirmed.

Following his crash Regis Laconi was taken by helicopter to Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. After undergoing checks later in the evening it was possible to have a better idea of the Frenchman's condition.

Laconi suffered two broken cervical vertebrae (C3 and C5), severe concussion and a contusion of the lung. A CT scan for eventual neurological damage, proved to be negative and for the moment he is in an induced coma and in a stable condition. After consultation with Dr. Maurizio Zorzi, the South African neuro-surgeon who was called from Pretoria to check on the patient's condition, it was decided not to operate immediately and to postpone any eventual intervention for a few days.

Barring complications, a further three weeks will be required before a clear clinical picture of the situation can be made, during which the French rider will have to remain totally immobile.

An update from this morning

Regis Laconi's condition is reported to be improving slowly. The French rider, who crashed on his out lap in the opening free practice session of Friday morning in a fast left-hand corner, is currently hospitalized in the intensive care unit of Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. He was successfully brought out of a medically-induced coma and his upper and lower limbs immediately showed signs of autonomous movement. As a result it has been decided to carry out the operation that involves the application of a plate to stabilize the two fractured vertebrae. The operation will be carried out on Tuesday 19th May, and Regis will have to stay a minimum of two weeks in the same hospital. He should, at the end of the month, be in a condition to be transferred to Paris, where he will complete his convalescence. The other neurological problems resulting from the crash are also showing positive results.
