I really value my hands and whilst looking for a new pair of gloves I splurged and bought a brand new pair of Dainese Full Metal Racers this morning and have to say they're fairly impressive, although... Read on.

Firstly, they're incredibly light-weight. It almost feels like you're not wearing anything. The leather on the underside of the fingers feels thinner as well which improves sensitivity although I'm not sure how well they'd fair in a crash despite the leather quality supposedly being higher than your average glove.

The titanium knuckles are like a huge penis extension. They're massive. They've got 'Dainese' laser etched onto them and are so mind bogglingly large they ostensibly dominate the glove's features, and lack thereof. I'll get to that point in a moment.

The stitching is very good, kevlar double stitched and it feels great to wear. The moulded fingers are done nicely and it feels like, once worn in, it is the perfect fit.

They've got some little placcy armour on the palm and just above the pinky finger with 'Distortion control' written on it. It doesn't make sense to me as I can't see what it would control. My pinky wriggles around quite freely... ?

The inside palm has a nice little section of rubber bristles just underneath the fingers for some added grip on the bars. It's a very nice touch although I didn't really notice it on my brief commute from the store.

The velcro straps are adequate however, and this is where my spiel turns a little sour, the wrist strap is unshielded meaning a surf could easily tear off the velcro strap and loosen the glove at the wrist. In contrast, the older model Alpinestar GP Plus gloves for example (I'm selling a pair that are too small for me) have a leather lip that extends over this strap, effectively shielding it from surfing and meaning the glove will remain fixed to your wrist even if you're doing a superman on your wrists across the tarmac.

And speaking of wrists, the only wrist armour to speak of is a small ~4cm circular piece of carbon fibre that sits above your wrist. It has some cushiony soft padding around the wrist but it really wouldn't do terribly much in terms of absorbing impact. Previous gloves I've owned and indeed other brands of current glove provide armour that wraps around the wrist and offers a bridge of protection between the glove and your jacket inserts whereas these gloves have virtually no substantial wrist armour and after riding with them it concerns me. So much so that I've located a pair of new Alpinestar GP Pro gloves and am going to exchange them tomorrow.

Perhaps I'm overreacting but I've only had these gloves for 10 minutes but the thought of having nothing on the wrist is daunting. Especially considering these gloves are uber-expensive.

Woulda though dianese would have thought of simple things like the pinky joint and leather flap over the velcro. Oh well the GP pros are an awesome glove, i love mine

Yeah, thanks for the heads up Irena but I am exchanging them for Alpinestar gloves. As nice as they are it was only whilst wearing them on the bike that I realised how thin they were at the wrist. The wrist feels like a cheap set of Rjays wet weather gloves. It's just thin elastic material and gives no feeling of protection.

They do have a pinky joint and i dont see much use for the flap over the velco. Ive got very similar dainese gloves to these and mine have never come undone.

Saf the gloves are designed to work the top over flap will protect wrist & if your glove wears enough to completely wear out wrist strap underside your already in trouble. Allot of gloves now are short length like what I use for summer.

I do use the GP Pro for track as you will slide for allot longer in most cases.

Good luck returning them - I tried that once and as soon as you've had them on your hands on the bike, it's like exchanging undies - impossible! Hope you have better luck than me. I have Teknic's and they are fantastic!

I think the flaps there so when u r sliding the road doesnt open it for u, not so it wears out first

These ones have no pinky joint. IIRC that was patented by Alpinestar.

I don't follow. I can only assume that they lack armour in the wrist because they assume I'm wearing a race suit with armour all the way up to the wrist? Sliding a long distance concerns me.

Following the MCAS bashing thread I got 'em from Wentworth Ave (Sean gave me $50 off thanks to Irena) and I'm returning them to Liverpool. All staff involved said that's no trouble provided I've got my receipts.

100%. If the velcro lets go there's a chance the glove will slip off like a habib's safety sneaker when his brand new gixxer thou highsides in a maccas carpark.

My spidis have detachable pinky joint.

If you want best wrist armour Held Pantoms are great, but they are expensive, not to mention they are made from kangaroo leathers. They also managed to fall apart at one stitch after 3 offs.

I've seen some good stuff about the Held Phantoms, but there is nowhere in Aus to buy them. They're not that expensive. They're much cheaper than these Dainese gloves...

I think we should have a gear review sticky or somthing like that, or a gear thread discussing gear.

Just get them from STG (the guys who made the video), I think mine fell apart since they were size too small. I'm 9.5 and they were 9, very tight fit. I still have one good glove. All the previous offs didn't leave a scratch on them. If you considering them and want to take a look at them PM me.

I'm sold on the Phantom's but the prob is I really need gloves now. I left it way too late and my current gloves are falling to pieces with holes in the fingers and such. I've got backup wet weather ones but they have bugger all sensitivity.

Where did you buy yours from and if posted how long did it take to arrive? I just noticed that HeldUSA have an online store.

I bought mine from newenough.com, they lasted 1.5years and around 25,000km.

This days I buy things from sportbiketrackgear.com, they are the same prices on both sites. But STG has cheaper shipping. STG has excellent service, they sent me wrong sprocket and they sent me another one for free. I'm their frequent customer.

Unreal I'm checking out the SBT website. I'm now thinking of getting a full refund for the Dainese and just waiting a couple of weeks for some Phantom's to arrive.

I just need to measure up my hand to make sure the sizing is correct.
