Does anyone know definitively whether or not you can ride an unregistered vehicle to the RTA for their inspection and to pick up the plates.
I have my repairable write off booked to go for an inspection at the RTA inspection station as required to do so. If it gets approved I then go RTA office to pay my rego and pick up my plates. Now I asked the RTA and got two different answers so really not sure.
Has anyone done this and know if it is legal?

My understanding is you place TRAFFIC over/where your number plate should be. I was told it was ok as long as your going straight to the RTA.
Typical RTA though to give you two different answers.

Typical RTA.... Unless someone can back up their "yes its ok" with a link to somewhere substantial then I wouldnt risk it.... borrow a trailer and be safe. (assumption based on if RTA can't tell you then who can......).
I guess you could ask the police the question but they will no doubt say "phone the RTA"
I have a trailer, but im way south of you.............

yes you can ride it to the Inpection, or to get it blue slipped
I've done it, and been pulled over.
Told the cops what the go was, all was ok.
I had to go from Panania to Padstow RTA to Mascot RTA Inspection Centre to get my bike inspected rego'd.
The cops pulled me over for riding around the M5 toll gate thingo, and then questioned why i didnt have plates... produced my paperwork, and they were satisfied.
From the RTA:
Unregistered vehicles can be driven for the purpose of obtaining registration by the most direct or convenient route:
* to the nearest convenient motor registry, or
* to the nearest convenient vehicle inspection station or authorised inspection station to determine whether the vehicle complies with the applicable vehicle standards, or
* in the course of inspecting or testing the vehicle to determine if it complies with the applicable vehicle standards, or
* to the nearest practicable weighbridge to determine the weight of the vehicle, or
* from a motor registry or inspection station where the registration of the vehicle has been refused, to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs can be made or where the vehicle can be garaged, unless a direction has been issued that the vehicle must not be driven before the necessary repairs have been made, or
* from an authorised inspection station to the nearest convenient place where necessary repairs or adjustments can be made or where the vehicle can be garaged, or
* to the nearest convenient office of a licensed insurer for the purpose of obtaining Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, or
* to the nearest convenient location for any other purpose directly associated with the registration process.
If you are caught driving an unregistered vehicle on any other route, you will be fined and police may remove the vehicle's number plates on the spot or they may seize the vehicle.
Thats what I went off.

and as the RTA have YELLED over the phone to me... "DO NOT put the word TRAFFIC on your vehicle". It's an old thing, long long long since made redundant... don't do it.
But yes, as above you can ride your bike there so long as the bike is required to be there for whatever reason (purely picking up plates isn't a good enough reason, but your inspection IS)

Just registered a bike purchased from interstate without rego.
RTA on the phone said the bike could be ridden unregistered for the purposes of getting inspected - so from house directly to inspection and direct return. No need for "Traffic" to be displayed.
I suppose if the RTA registry office was between your house and the inspection station it would OK to stop there, but otherwise I would say no.

Well that's it I am riding her in on Friday the 29th and blaming all who have posted here. Please provide contact details:)
Bike is located at work so ride it down the M4 to Silverwater then home, just pissed I have to wait so long to get it registered.

Yeah always get a laugh still seeing TRAFFIC plates fitted,
that went out prior to 1990.
I have also been told previously by the RTA (mid 90's) that it was OK to drive the car to a repairer
(obviously if the car is safe enough to drive,i.e. my V8 powered Capri needed new custom extractors as
they had become slightly porous in some parts from rust,so were just a bit noisy)
under these conditions:
1)the vehicle is required to be at the repairers for the repairs to be carried out.
2)as long as you have contacted said repairer
(i.e cops can verify with repairer you are expected that day)
2)you have a written letter in the car stating that you are driving to (repairers name) for the purpose of repairs in order to make the car ready for registration,WITH the day's date and the storage point address(usually your home address) and destination address on it.
3)if you have the rego plates they should NOT be fitted, but carried in the car.(nothing to be fitted in plates place)
4)you must drive the most practical direct route to the repairers from where the vehicle is stored
and directly to the repairers(no drive thru maccas:ticketgrumblesmile:)
the return trip should also be as direct as practical.
(does not include going to get fuel)
Now that was the situation 15 years ago :dohsmiley:
and not many people seemed to know about it then, or now.
But I haven't had to do this myself for about 6-7 years now.
So my advice is to check for yourself,
what the current recommended practice is at the RTA.
Its probably worth asking at your local POLICE station too,
as they will be your roadside inquisitors.:mod_smilie_bj:
