View Full Version : Do you use a speedo at the track?

Over the years I've seen alot of folks tape up their speedo, not wanting to see the numbers as they hoon around in circles. On my previous track bike I didn't install a speedo as the only real important thing is lap times.

The 'Pan' measurement of speed method is all I'll use...it offers guaranteed positive results every time :ayyy:

Try as I might I just cant seem to get near Pan's lap times :dohsmiley:

My track bike doesn't even have a speedo so it not an issue for me. saf, I think you have hit the nail on the head regarding the difference between top speeds & fast lap times. People who concentrate watching their speedo tick over on the straight sometimes forget about the 4km of corners that follow :confused1:

I tape it up. It's easier for me to tip in faster if I don't know how fast I'm going.

Adding to that....
I used to be scared of T1...now use the 'Danoz' method...sphincter pulsation rates have come down to normal levels :ayyy:

We are blessed with proactive pioneers here

No, and no box to tick as I don't look at the speed BUT I don't tape it up. Why would you? So that the glue stays behind?

nop get mine covered, only once have I riden with it and that was to just see what speed I'd get up to in the straight.

Perhaps you could wrap some silk around the instrument cluster instead? :baby:

I try not to look at it, but always did coming out of T1, into T9, etc...bad habit :dohsmiley: With racechrono I'm not looking at it and the recorded speeds are real :ayyy:

on a serious note....

Have yous seen the heads up display device you can clip to ya visor?

I take it and assume the general consensus is why we don't look is that it creates a distraction....lack of time at key intervals.

I've seen it some time ago now and can't remember where I found it.
Whether it is legal or not is questionable...road and track.
I recall it displays both speed and gear selection in either periphery.

...a handy device I believe if your interests are uninterrupted views of your heading...with added info you desire.

But for me, speed wasn't an interest (maybe corner speed would be nice...straight line, couldn't care less).
I'd like timer function tho....showing splits. :)

'On a serious note?' :lmao: you must have clicked onto the wrong forum :stirthepot:

I have seen the HUD display you're referring to Zee, it's pretty primitive from what I recall, and it was 'boxy' outside the helmet/visor.

I also remember that during CSS level 1, one of the very first drills is the one where you are told to 'recognise' your speed etc, and Steve B explained that the difference between you (or me) and Rossi (or Pedrosa) is that whilst we could probably judge our speed withing maybe 7 km/h, Rossi would be accurate within 1 km/h. The benefit being that you'd be able to replicate it again and again. So I always 'assumed' that it was something I had to learn.

Then again, perhaps a speedo is no different to track markers, those little 'cheat notes' that help us go around faster ... :ayyy:

Not so related, but somewhat related ask..

Removing speedo, not all bikes have but most newer are linked via computer, ecu etc, would removing speedo affect circuit, and would odemeter still kick over ks without it ?? (speaking of the digital odo's ofcourse)..

Zee

If you unplug it, J ...no signal, no info.
Unless the sensor has an inbuilt memory of whats been ticked over and then immediately updates once re connected. :confused1:

Johnny
07-05-2009, 01:21 PM
Cheers Zee..Cant remember were I read which bikes actually do have that inbuilt memory to stop km fraud, but I remember reading it somehwere:confused:

I know the K6 1k gix doesnt for a fact, and starts and runs fine without speedo..

Me either, whats the point of looking at something on the straight thats not even accurate ....I love listening to the " I was hiting 300 down the straight ":hatter:
Do like to check exit on 12 as now i have used chrono I no where I want it to be

I can't wait for the day when technology lets you 'record' a lap, then have a HUD projection showing your 'ghost' lap so you can chase your best time :D

I used to look at it quite a bit at EC, especially coming out of T1 and T12... Then I did my last TD on a bike that didn't have one and it took me less than a session to learn the rpms I wanted to be on and it sort of became a substitute for the speedo. Instead of checking if I had a decent speed out of the turns I'd check if my rpm was high enough... does that count as a cheat??:confused1:

jasonbw
07-05-2009, 02:11 PM
nahhh, cheats are doing things that you shouldn't be doing in order to gain advantage... like Pan's method... or the T4->T9 duck through at EC :D

That would be awesome. I can tell you play racing games. :)

I prefer not to have the speedo for a couple of reasons. Namely, it's distracting enough looking down to see the tacho when I'm concentrating on the feel of the bike and current and upcoming corners so to feel tempted to look down more frequently to see my speed isn't welcome.

Also, looking down and seeing 200+ makes me question what the fuck I'm doing risking everything else that's good in my life for a bit of adrenaline.

Additionally, if Rossi and co knows how fast they're going in their head.. does this imply they don't have a speedo on their cluster?

I think the guy who binned his Busa at OP on Sunday was checking his speedo at the time.

+1, that's what I want. It would be a bit like always having a slightly faster rider in front of you, the best way to learn. Where can I buy it?

(Actually, Nuff showed me how you can use Racechrono to do something like that if you want to compare two sessions ... like before and after suspension changes, or whne using a different technique etc. Really cool, you can see where you're faster, where you're catching up, lagging behind and so forth)

It's a bit pointless looking at the speedo anyway as 270 is possibly only 245 .

Fellas, I'll be running my own race school soon... just keep your eyes and ears open... :) It'll be at a local coffee shop.

Answer to the question: no, I don't look at the speedo.... much! After CSBS Level 1 I am trying to learn how to estimate speed better now...

I used to look at speedo all the time before CSS1, after CSS I've stopped, it's too distracting and impossible to do when hanging of the bike and I'm mid corner. Also I don't tape it up. Like others have said, I can check the exact speeds at any point on the track with racechrono.

The only thing that I check on my bike is tacho (well, the flashing lights really) when I'm accelerating to know when to up shift and sometimes I need to check what gear I'm in.

used to tape it up on the road bikes years ago but now just don't even bother....gearing is out so not point looking at it.....I'll occasional take a glance and ensure I'm in the right gear (on indicator) but usually too busy looking where I wanna go.....RaceChrono will tell me everything I need to know about the speed :ayyy:

my first track day I looked at the speedo all day, my 2nd was wet and concentrated on other things, like staying in a straight line! My 3rd and most recent, i didnt look at all really as I concentrated on my body position and getting my knee down :ayyy:

so yeah thats a no, i guess!

Measured speed at the race track doesn't worry me. If someone goes past me in a straight line then I'm not going fast enough.....and the opposite applies.
Plus, when it all turns to shite, no speedo means one less thing I can f@ck:n:

Schtevo
07-05-2009, 10:01 PM
If you have time to check the speedo you are either going too slow therefore you don't need to watch what you are doing or you are about to crash because you are not watching what you are doing enough.....

I don't have one and don't really want one. I ride at the track to enjoy cornering as fast as I possibly can - fast is easy in a straight line so who really cares about how fast you are going.

I wanted to take my speedo off, but settled for taping it up.. I don't care about the speeds because they're only going to disappoint me anyway!

But seriously, what I want to know is, why aren't there more options regarding cats? I have many more complaints I would like to voice than just it's breath.. I don't think I'm the only one

The only time I find it a little bit useful is turn 1 at Eastern Creek, the reason being that it is sooo important to carry max speed through there. The corner can make a 1+ second difference if you get it right or wrong. That said, I only look at it coming out of the corner, and it really is an indicator of the exit you get from turn 12. At every other track I have ridden at, and every other corner at EC, there is just no time to look at it, you would probably lose time by looking down to see how fast you are going.
