im confused. is it a 2 stroke or a V4.. How can you have both, thats just sort of wrong?

It seems to be quite big... As in too big for a decent sportbike. Other than that, LOVE IT!:ayyy:

think about most of those 2 stroke out boards out there
most are v6s
wasnt the RG500 a V4?

RG were square four I believe - RD's were V's but - they also had V3's too.... ah, 2 strokes! (nostalgia) - I can't believe I played TZ's on Youtube the other day just to listen the motors.... :)

eGad man... what do you think carried Doohan and Gardner to the finish line... V4's baby.

I dont even know why these guys made this thing. It sure aint goin in a bike. I jus think they challenged themselves to see if it could be done.
It IS one hell of an engine though and it runs smooth too.

Yep thats correct , my fishing boat has a v4 90 hp and wasn't the rz 500 also a v4.:)

Sounds just like an outboard at the end.

Sounds Awesome......... Yeah the RG500 was a stepped four in a square config....i owned a couple of them....http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5449/engine002.jpg

Hold up....
I'll go get the wielder out.... Attach this to my 21 speed bicycle....200BHP of pure POWER or how i would call it a lawn mower and bicycle gone horribly wrong.....

Rz500's weren't real v4's,they had twin cranks.
So they are really a square four in a V configuration.:confused1:

Awsome!
2 strokes have so much potential. From trials bikes with smooth tractor like torque @ low rpm to vicious 25'000RPM screamers.
I wish instead of canning the 500cc GP bikes, they produced modern 750-1000cc V4's in a slightly lower state of tune with broader smoother powerbands...
The 500's were producing 200HP, instead imagine a 1000cc 2 stroke detuned from 400HP to around 300HP with big bang configuration and modern electronics!
They would be relatively smooth and user friendly and still 40HP up on the 990 motogp bikes :Kat00:
There used to be a guy in Unanderra by the name of Chris Dowd who was a renounded Superbike enging builder in the 90's (not sure what he's up to these days) who bult a methanol burning 1000cc Vtwin 2 stroke using CR500R cylinders on his own custom built crank cases for speedway side cars, When I went there he was in the process of mounting on in a GSXR750 frame.
I never did se the end result but Im sure it would have been a beast to ride :)

Yep thats right, you could run oversized in one set of pistons without the other....

Met a bloke in Gouldburn 10 years ago with the same design engine.
Can't recall his name(could be the same guy),we dropped into his place to meet up with Jason Kain and when we walked into his workshop it was the first thing I spotted, it was in a litresprint chassis.

The cr 500 motor only puts out around 60hp at the rear wheel so a v twin cr 1000 so to speak im guessing would only have aprox the same power as a modern 600....

This month's AMCN has an article about an 1100cc 3-cylinder 2-stroke in a 08 zx10 chassis produced in cairns. the whole thing weighs 150kg and puts out 186kw. Ouch. Called the TSS1100GP, not sure it's finished yet: http://www.twostrokeshop.com/TSS1100GP.htm

2 stroke refers to the firing cycle of the engine where as V4 refers to the number of cylinders and the layout of the cylinders.
It is a pity that companies like Honda have laid off of 2 stroke development (they mentioned a few years ago that they would be looking heavily into it as the future of engines but seem to have pulled back a bit). The power potentials are so much higher with with 2 stroke as there are twice as many power strokes per revolution (1 power stroke per revolution per cylinder vs 1 power stroke per 2 revolutions per cylinder for a 4 stroke). The main down side that has limited 2 strokes is the emissions problem. The simple valve system that gives them so much potential with power and revs is also the down fall when it comes to emissions as there is not the fine level of control that is available with a 4 stroke and overhead valves which results in higher emission levels.
2 strokes allow you to have the same power in half the engine, resulting in smaller engines, and if the emissions problem could be sorted, the potential for much lower emissions per HP - hopefully someone will come up with a new valving system for 2 stroked that will solve this problem, as I for 1 love the power delivery on a good 2 stroke engine!

The Vtwin in question had wildly modified porting, carburation, krober ignition and custom built expansion chambers (about 170HP apparently and lots!! of torque)
Yes in standard trim they are a very docile motor for a 500cc two stroke, They are under carburatored (they use the smaller size carb than even the later model CR125's) and run a low 6.8:1 compression ratio.
So you can improve the porting, exhaust and ignition and get a fair improvement pretty easilly but they are held back by the fact that there isnt really any decent carbs made for two strokes over 40mm.
In theory you would need around about an 80mm venturi to get maximum flow and a potential 240HP+ out of a single cylinder 500cc engine. (I say in theory because the piston design of a two stroke needed to dictate port timming is quite large and heavy) So building a 500 single with light enough internals to withstand the RPM required to make this massive amount of HP would be a challenge to say the least.. (150HP shouldnt be too hard to acheive)
Hmm I think a 2 stroke build up might be in order
A 1000cc V4 with 250cc cylinders would be a nice configuration:ayyy:
